I don’t want anything on my desk which is unnecessary. The pencils are in their place
to my right, the sharpener is next to them and the script is in the centre. Simplicity is the
secret for me, so all I’ve got on my desk apart from the phone, the clock, and of course a
family photo, is my work.
I like felt-tip pens. At the moment, I’m writing a new book. As always, I put out seven
pens a week to the right of my script, and I use one a day and throw it away at the end of the

2
day. These are silly things, but they are all part of making it easy. I even have an electric
pencil sharpener so that I can’t complain that I had to waste time sharpening a pencil.

Do You Know Your Brain?

Research shows that the brain has two sides: the left side which controls logical,
rational thinking; and the right side which is more dominant in artistic activities which require
imagination.
Psychologists believe that most of us have a lot of creative ability, but often we don’t
use it because our daily lives are dominated by the organized, analytical left side of the brain.
And this is particularly true at school where much more time and emphasis is given to left
brain activities such as mathematics and verbal reasoning, than to right brain activities such as
art and music.
What’s more, even when we do activities which are more successful using the right
side of the brain, we often use the left side instead. An example of this is drawing. Many
people try to identify the thing they are drawing, e.g. an eye or a nose, and then copy their
idea of what an eye or a nose looks like. In other words, they draw what they know and not
what they see. This is an example of left brain thinking and the result is usually very childlike.

1. F 2. 3. 4. 5.

1. Both sides of the brain have a direct influence over rational thinking.
2. We usually use the left side of the brain to deal with everyday problems.
3. Both the left and the right sides of the brain are equally developed at school.
4. When drawing it’s not good to imitate your idea of the object or to draw what you
know about it.
5. If you draw using the left side of the brain, the result is excellent.

to use pens, we had to use pencils until we became really good at writing. I can write a few
characters in Chinese now, but not very many. As far as my normal writing is concerned, I

Seasonal Affective Disorder – SAD

In winter many people spend a lot of time indoors, and for many of us we get up in the
dark, and by the time we leave work or school it’s dark again. A surprising number of people
are affected by these conditions and there is even a name for this winter depression – Seasonal
Affective Disorder or SAD.
The most important symptom is depression, closely followed by the desire to sleep all
the time. Some people also suffer from anxiety, some eat more, and others are more sensitive
to pain, such as headaches and pains in their arms and legs. What actually causes SAD?

35
Experts think that it is caused by a hormonal problem – some people produce too much of this
hormone at night, especially in the winter, when the sunlight can’t regulate it.
There is also evidence that this is only a problem in parts of the world which have a
cold, dark winter – there is very little evidence of it near the equator.
Some patients are treated by photo-therapy: they sit under special lights for a few
hours every day; and some feel immediate improvement after the first treatment.

1.T 2. 3. 4. 5.

1. Conditions such as spending all the time indoors, getting up in the dark, etc can
have a strong influence on people’s behaviour.

3. One of the symptoms of SAD is the wish to sleep all the time.
4. SAD is a problem known all over the world.
5. There is a treatment for SAD, but it is completely ineffective.
