Pre-requisite: This is not a basic communication course. Should have


fundamentals of communication & communication skills in place – language,
public speaking, social skills, etc.

Course objectives:
1. To understand and appreciate the role of communication in team processes
and leadership functions;
2. To understand and develop competencies to deal with communication issues
in team work and leadership situations;
3. To appreciate and adapt to differing styles of communication;
4. To expand the repertoire and enhance the effectiveness of communication
capabilities in the context of leadership and work in teams.

1. Role of communication in team and leadership functioning 1


Introduction and context setting --- Communication as a
competency and skill; Interpersonal, small group and large group
communication; Communication variable in interactions;
Leadership and team work.

2. Communication approaches in building teams 2


Communication dynamics in teams; Communication and
interaction in different types of teams; Communication in
organization-mandated teams; Communicating to create
ownership and buy-in; Barriers to communication processes in
teams; Team cohesion and dynamics; Communication strategies
and role of communication in team cohesion; The culture variable.

communication.

6. Leadership styles and communication variable 2


Communication styles and leadership styles; Adequacy and
allowable weaknesses in communication and leadership styles;
Strategies to make communication effective in different leadership
styles.

7. Communication in team crisis and stress 2


Communication behavior during team crisis; Symptoms of
oncoming crisis and stress; Communication contribution to de-
escalate stress and resolve crisis; Preventive measures;
Communication overload and communication famine.

8. Disruptive communication practices in teams 2


Nature of disruptions in team processes; Communication failures,
recovery and rehabilitation; Pre-empting disruptions in
communication; preventive maintenance strategies.

9. Motivational and inspirational communication in leadership 2


Motivational and inspirational role of leaders; Communication
traits of inspiring leaders; Making the right moves – non-verbal
communication in inspiration and motivation; Communication
traits of leaders successful in crises and tough times.

Pedagogy / Teaching methodology:
Principally workshop methodology and experiential learning to be used
with role play, caselets, simulation, situation analysis, etc.
All work to be done during scheduled sessions, Prior work for classes may
include reading and review of circulated Additional Reading Papers, role
play briefings, caselets, etc.

Evaluation critieria:
Evaluation will include peer evaluation and be participative. Some
of the components will be graded in groups depending on the
nature of tasks and assignment.
Grade weightage

1. Class participation 15 %
2. Critique of article in suggested reading 10 %
3. Total (of 8 components below) * 60 %

* In item 3, each component has a minimum weightage of 5%. Each


student may hike the weight of any 4 component of choice to 10%. The
evaluation and grading in the individual components will be based on in-
class assignments and activities. They do not need prior preparation.
