that I’ve stuck with since secondary school. From playing Munchkin Coroner in The Wizard of Oz,
I’ve gone on to explore the world of theatre through devising, script work and physical theatre. My
studies have focused on how and why a technique was used and how audiences are affected;
I’ve loved thinking of interesting ways to educate and spread awareness with acting, rather than
just to entertain. I believe this is imperative to peoples’ mental, physical, and emotional growth.
I want to show these benefits to others and help them grow through performance and studying
Theatre in university will help me expand on my process of doing so.
As a student with autism, studying Theatre through my teen years has given me a huge
confidence boost. I have learned that observation and communication go hand in hand when
devising and that subject specific knowledge (like my special interests) can develop core parts of
my work or help me understand stimuli easier. I’ve developed my skills both directly and
indirectly - I’m currently completing a Performing and Production Arts course within college,
developing my skills in singing and dancing along with my knowledge across the Industry,
vocationally and academically. I’ve adopted a have-a-go attitude through the course, so I’ve
been a lot more open to exploring all kinds of performance styles and letting them influence my
own creative projects. I’ve also been part of the amateur operatic society Solihull On Stage (or
SOS) for 5 years, where I’ve gained experience with being in a professional performing
environment (in both the adult and child section) every year, as well as understanding scripts
and learning heavy amounts of choreography.
As a Brownie and Girl Guide I gained strong transferable skills, such as patience and
adapting my communication style whilst helping care for younger kids. I planned and budgeted
a camping weekend for the group, helped raise money for the community hall that we were
based in and learned to trust in myself a little more. This was developed within NCS where I had
a taster of university life in halls and fully organized a charity fundraiser – we presented a pitch
for it and put it into action within two weeks. I’m proud of myself for this because I’ve became
more comfortable with speaking to strangers and made friends with those I normally wouldn’t.
My personal interests also link to my studies; I love the immersive worlds and creativity
of animation. Telling stories in these kinds of styles make for captivating and beautiful works of
art that can give a much deeper meaning. Under-represented communities within animated
shows make me particularly happy because it shows that there’s chance for others to
understand the issues they experience. For example, cartoons such as Steven Universe have
been ground-breaking for LGBTQ+ representation and discuss heavy topics like toxic
relationships and mental health issues. Some shows like this even have characters with autistic
traits. This sort of content has helped me realize how much difference can be made for people
with just one performance and has empowered me to follow in creators’ footsteps. I equally
love interacting with creative media, which gave me a love for Dungeons and Dragons
campaigns. These give players the chance to shape the worlds shown to them and ‘become’ the
characters they play as. This, combined with game’s unique process of finding outcomes, can
lead to unique situations and therefore the development of players’ improvisation skills. I think
it’s a great opportunity for budding actors and creators.
The experience I’ve had and the knowledge I’ve gained so far is vital to my growth into
topics such as applied theatre or dramatherapy. Studying Theatre has really encouraged me to
consider roles within them, and I believe I could reach and help so many people if I expanded
my knowledge further in university.
