EEE 133 1s2021 Problem Set 2

The document provides instructions for Problem Set 2 in EEE 133. Students are instructed to: 1) Work problems on separate pages, showing work and boxing final answers to two decimal places. 2) Digitize submissions by scanning or using an app, saving each problem's solution as a separate PDF file named according to a specific convention. 3) Zip all PDFs and name the zip file according to another specific convention. 4) Upload the zip file by a specified deadline. The problem set then lists 4 problems involving circuit analysis, each worth a certain number of points.

EEE 133 1s2021 Problem Set 2

Instructions:
Start each problem on a new page. Write legibly and show your complete solutions to
each problem item. Box your final answers. Round off your final answers to two decimal
places.

Digitize your submissions by using a scanner or an app such as Office Lens or

CamScanner. Save your solutions to each problem into separate PDF files and use the
following naming convention:
<your student number>_ps<problem set #>_<question #>.pdf
e.g. 202012345_ps2_1.pdf, for student 202012345’s solution to question #1.

Finally, zip all your PDF files into a single archive and use the naming convention
<student number>_ps<problem set #>.zip, e.g. 202012345_ps2.zip

Upload your zip file to the corresponding submission bin in UVLe before September 29,
9AM.

1. (4.5 pts for Topic 4) Consider the diode clamper circuit below used in circuits
such as restoring the DC in a video signal (see
https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/application-notes/AN-
1603.pdf).

Assume an ideal diode and that the capacitor is initially uncharged. The input
signal vi(t) = -5V for 0<=t<5us, 0V for 5us<=t<10us, and 1V for 10us<=t<15us.
For each of the 5us time segments above (1.5 pts each):
a. Determine the state of the diode
b. Determine an expression for and sketch vo(t)
c. Verify your assumption on the state of the diode (Tip: if your initial guess
did not pass the verification, flip your assumption and repeat the above
steps)

2. (2 pts for Topic 5) Given the following ideal op-amp circuit with v i (t) = 3u(t) V,
R1 = 20 kΩ,  Rf = 50 kΩ,  R2 = 10 kΩ, R3 = 20 kΩ , and C = 2 μF , determine the
following:
a. The Thevenin voltage and resistance seen by the capacitor for t > 0 .
(Hint: review the equivalent circuit model of the ideal op-amp.) [1.6 pts]
b. The step response v o (t) for t > 0 . [0.4 pts]

3. (2 pts for Topic 5) For the circuit below, the switch is open for a very long time
before closing at t = 0 . Determine the following quantities:

a. v c (0+ ),   v c ( )   and the circuit’s time constant τ [1.6 pts]
b. The equation for v c (t) for t > 0 [0.4 pts]
4. (4 pts for Topic 6) In the circuit shown, vC = 0 V and iL = -12.25 mA at t = 0.

a. Solve for v(t) for t > 0 if R = 2.4 kΩ.

b. Solve for R = Rcrit that makes the response critically damped, then solve
for v(t) for t > 0 and R = Rcrit.
c. Solve for v(t) for t > 0 if R = 1.6 kΩ.
