Movie Analysis The Intern
This is a great film to relate to the contents of this course because it demonstrates
the problems and situations elders face towards the end of their live, such as
retirement, widowhood, the slowing of active time and adaptation difficulties.
Examples of this change in lifestyle showed are him being constantly on the look
for new classes or something to do, their declining abilities and physiological
functioning makes them more dependent and deprived, and end up feeling like a
burden whenever he went over to his son’s house and other evets that have a
damaging effect on elder’s mental health like losing friends, family members or
even a their partner.
The life story of Ben seems overall satisfactory, and even he says the has had no
regrets, but that as of the lately “There’s a hole in my life and I need to fill it”. It’s a
common thought of elders as they approach this phase of life is that it is
undesirable and filled with problems and uncertainties: the end of their laboral life,
their kids, if they have any, have formed their own families and they are left alone
with their partners or even by themselves, handling the troubles and emotions of
daily life challenges, can have a harming effect on their capacity and resources to
overcome this situations.
Even though Ben seemed to be in good shape and healthy for his age, he still had
problems related to old age like high pressure and trouble sleeping. But he had a
lot of energy compared to other adults his age, and because of his proactive and
problem-solving ability were still intact, he could manage and improve on the work
of other younger coworkers, being still an intern. This demonstrates that many
elders, even when they may be lacking on physical strength or may have a
difficulty adapting to new methods or technology, they make up for it on work
experience and could help out giving a new perspective on the subjects.
Another interesting point made in the movie is the learning curve that they face
when confronting new challenges, especially when they try to learn how to use new
technologies. It is common knowledge that elders adjust slower to new
technologies than younger generations, and it is related to the lack of experience
they have on this matter. But, if this new artifacts can be adapted or explained to
them like something they already have experience managing, like the telephone or
the older computers, or even simplifying the use of this to the essentials, it can be
a very useful tool for working, as it is shown at the start of Ben’s internship, or to
keep them connected to their relatives or find friends, like when Jules helps him
make a Facebook account.
The problems with adjustment and adaptation of elders to the newer lifestyle is not
only referring to the use of technologies or work-related policies, it is also shown in
the differences in interaction. The younger generations have grown-up already
surrounded with a globalization culture in which everything you need is at your
reach, but it means you don’t have to make a mayor efforts, and when a
challenging situation presents itself, they have no resources to confront it, such as
Davis when he is kicked out of his parents’ house and, not finding an apartment,
asks Ben to take him in. Communication between people far away is easier than
ever, but it also affects the abilities in face-to-face interactions and produces
phenomenon such as social anxiety; it is shown in the relation that Jason has with
Becky, and his inability to understand women correlated to inexperience in social
relations face-to-face.
This generation could benefit greatly with the company and exchange of
experiences and stories with their elders. And not only them, but older adults could
too benefit from more frequent social interaction, as they are more likely to have
social isolation leading to loneliness and depression, mainly due to lack of
companionship. As Ben put it when he said he had a hole in his life he needed to
fill, many older adults bear with feelings of unfulfillment, deprivation and
depression. People who are lonely are more likely to believe that other people will
reject them, and therefore more likely to have a feeling of low self-worth, which
affects both generations alike.
Moreover, due to generation gap the youth do not pay attention to their suggestion
and advice, thinking their advice is outdated, or because they think they will be
judgmental of their behavior or won’t understand their perspective. As when Jules
initially found out she had to work with Ben, she wanted to have as little direct
contact with him as possible, and she thought his naturally caring and observant
nature was too intrusive. But, as their relationship developed, she realized that his
mature perspective and experience with relationships and the hardships of
managing a business, she gets closer and closer to him, to the point of calling him
her best friend.
The movie captures very well the way young people view and interact with their
elders, but also how increasing our communication and closeness to them isn’t all
that difficult, as the misunderstandings or disagreements are solved and we both
overcome the adaptation difficulties, both group can work together to complement
each other and help better each other.
