Lesson Learned # 3

This document discusses lessons learned from a research methods session. It covers four data types (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio), the importance of understanding data types when designing research questions, and common problems in questionnaire design like inconsistent responses and higher ratings. Usage Attitude Image Studies for new products and question sequencing are also mentioned. Common errors in research like lack of rapport, mortalities, and researcher bias are listed. The document emphasizes understanding question formulation and design to effectively conduct research with clients in the future.

Lesson Learned # 2 Code Name: Sweetness

October 8, 2016
I learned from Session 5 the example of data types, the correct way of
designing and formulating questions, Usage Attitude Image Study, and common
problems and errors encountered in research.
There are four data types, namely, nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio.
The book defines the following data as follow:

It is very important to know what data types one should need at the end of
the research so one can effectively design and formulate relevant questions for
the research.
When formulating the research questions, one should know real objective
of the research so one can do the correct research design and the research
won’t go to waste because as the saying goes “Garbage In, Garbage Out”.
The following are the major decisions in questionnaire design:
1. What questions should be asked?
a. What is the purpose of the study?
b. What is the problem?
c. What are to be measure
2. What type of questions?
a. Open-ended or closed-ended
b. Disguised or straight-forward questions
c. Use specific, simple, conversational language
Usage Attitude Image Study (UAI) was also taught for doing research for
new products, new advertisements, or when comparing one product to the ideal
or a competitor.
The questioning should also follow a sequence. It should be broad to
specific and not the other way around.
The questionnaire should also be tested, revised, and finalized. If one will
use another language aside from English for example, one should ask an
independent person translate the other language back to English to see if there is
an error in translation.
Below are the common problems encountered in doing research:
 Filipino respondents are Truthful and NOT honest which results to
inconsistencies in the answers. One should always remind the respondent
the objective of the research and be honest with his/her answers.
 During rating scales, respondents tend to give higher ratings.
 Respondents oftentimes reply “I Don’t Know” due to lack of rapport, poor
design of questioning, or there are missing data.
 Some don’t want to answer or continue with the second round of
questioning which results to mortalities.
 “Group” response vs. person-to-person
 The bias of the researcher in asking questions (one should always do a
briefing and de-briefing so the methodology of asking and doing the
research is correct).
 Cheating of the researchers/ Wrong recording of answers.
Different types of questions were taught such as closed ended question, likert
type rating sale, monadic rating scale, rank order question, and constant sum
scale.
Knowing the correct way of formulating and designing questions, and what
types of questions should used, and knowing the common errors will be
beneficial on what I do as a Financial Advisor when I do a research with my
clients in the future. It will also help me in doing informal research with my clients
such as what are the financial goals people usually want to achieve. Their
monthly budget, and what other financial plans I can prepare for in the future
based on their current needs.
