History

It is influenced by Spanish
colonization, pop music, rock and roll
and hip hop music from US.

The native talent for music was
developed when the Spanish and
Mexican dances were introduced in the
Philippines, Filipino composers made
them part of Filipino culture.

From its pre-Hispanic life, Filipinos


expressed themselves through their
ethnic musical instruments.

Original Philippine Music (now


commonly known as Original
Pinoy Music), started and
popularized during the 70's
decade.

During early 70's, Pinoy compositions
became more nationalistic and socio-
political as well as the use of tagalong.

Folk musicians included Freddie Aguilar,


Asin, Florante. Fredie Aguilar had a debut
single, "Anak" and it became known in
Asia and Europe. Asin, a folk ethnic band,
was the first commercial band to
successfully bring a pro-environment
song to the airwaves with "Masdan Mo
Ang Kapaligiran".

“King of Filipino Rap Music” and
pioneered the rap genre in the
country.
Wrote songs on nationalism and
societal issues. Thought-provoking
and inspiring, his work left a mark on
the industry and is still celebrated by
Filipino musicians today.
•He is widely regarded as the best
and the most successful local Filipino
rapper of all-time.
Parokya ni Edgar

The group is known for their lyrics’


humorous wordplay that strongly
appeals to a Filipino sense of humor.
Parokya ni Edgar is a Filipino band
formed in 1993.
The band is known for its original rock
novelty songs and often satirical
covers of popular songs both foreign
and local.
The band is adept at playing in
various musical genres.

The traditional music
of the Philippines, like
the folk music of other
countries, reflects the
life of common, mostly
rural Filipino.

Like its counterparts in


Asia, a lot of traditional
songs from the
Philippines have a strong
connection with nature.

KUNDIMAN

a genre of traditional
Filipino love songs.

The lyrics of the Kundiman are


written in Tagalog. The
melody is characterized by a
smooth, flowing and gentle
rhythm with dramatic
intervals. Kundiman was the
traditional means of serenade
in the Philippines.

a musical genre in
the Philippines that began in
the early 1970s in Manila,
flourished and peaked in the
mid to late 1970s, and waned in
popularity by the
early 1980s.

It is often
considered the "bright side" of
the Martial Law era and has
influenced all modern genres
in the country by being the
forerunner to OPM

a modern term for an ancient


instrumental form
of music composed on a row
of small, horizontally laid
gongs that function
melodically, accompanied by
larger, suspended gongs and
drums.

Technically, kulintang is
the Maguindanao, Ternate and
Timor term for the idiophone of
metal gong kettles which are laid
horizontally upon a rack to create
an entire kulintang set. It is played
by striking the bosses of the
gongs with two wooden beaters

Reggae in the Philippines
comprises the many forms of
reggae and at times combining
traditional Filipino forms of
music and instruments in their
music.

The provinces of Aklan,mainly


Boracay Island, Quezon,
Pampanga and Pangasinan,
Negros Occidental and Negros
Oriental, Palawan, Surigao del
Norte (mainly Siargao Island)
and Marinduque, and
the cities of Manila, Cebu and
Davao

The Visayas section
of the Philippines has had the
largest concentration of reggae
groups, with Cebu City of
Central Visayas even being
dubbed "The Reggae Capital of
the Philippines“

In early 2007, Ziggy Marley


performed at the MTV
Philippines festival, "Reggae
Fest by the Bay" in Manila.

- is a Filipino reggae, ska and dub band based


in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines.
-The name is taken from the 1970s Cebu band Leon
Kilat, which the latter group claims, was first to sing
about "Agta". 
- They are a popular reggae band in Manila, winning
a "Song Of The Year Award" in NU-107's Rock Awards
for Ako Si M16, their first single from the album party
pipol ur on dub tv.

of underground rock and
progressive music.

2000s : Hip hop, reggae,


acoustic pop/jazz and R&B-
influenced bands dominated
the Philippine music scene,
causing Pinoy rock to take a
backseat. Only a number of
Pinoy rock bands managed to
stay in the mainstream during
this period.

2010s:
In mid-2010, NU 107, known as
the nation's premier FM
station using a rock format,
had been taken down as it
was sold by its management
after a declining interest
by the audience.

In the early 2010s, rock music


was still largely popular in the
country despite declining in
sales, due to the
domination of K-pop, pop and
electronic music, and the rise
of music streaming services.

The band's music is a fusion


of alternative and pop music. 
The band gained a mainstream exposure in the early
2000s and was a prominent fixture of the Tunog Kalye
era.

Beginnings (1960s–1970s)

Filipino pop songs mainly referred to songs


popularized since the 1960s, especially those in
the ballad form, by major commercial artists
like Pilita Corrales and Nora Aunor, and in the 1970s
by Basil Valdez, Freddie Aguilar and Rey Valera.

Chan rose to fame in the 1970s by composing
original English love songs alongside modern
Tagalog songs. Pioneer pop groups in the same
decade include Manila sound groups APO Hiking
Society and Hotdog

Beginnings (1960s–1970s)
Golden age of Filipino music

In the 1980s, disco group VST & Co. and pop icon Gary V.
gave rise to dance-pop in the mainstream.
The early to mid-1990s saw the emergence of the pop-
rock group.
Eraserheads, considered as a turning-point in the OPM
music scene.
In the wake of their success was the emergence of a
string of influential bands such as Yano, Siakol, Parokya
ni Edgar, Grin Department, Rivermaya, Moonstar 88 and
Hungry Young Poets, each of which mixes the influence of
a variety of pop and rock subgenres into their style.

performed by musicians
of Filipino descent, both in
the Philippines and
overseas, especially by
Filipino-Americans

contemporary Filipino-American hip-hop
artists
