MUSIC 10 – QUARTER 2 – WEEK 6 - Experiencing Afro-Latin American and Popular Music
It was then called pop music as it became a popular source of entertainment for
many people, be it in radio or live performances.
Pop music covers a wide range of songs from folk, country and Western, to the
ballads, standards and rock n’ roll.
What Is It
Popular Music
Popular music started as a body of musical genres from the African-
American music. Most of these musical genres are offshoot of the earliest musical
styles as a result of human living in the countryside, cultural orientation and pride,
political issues, historical accounts of experiences by concerned authors/writers,
or simply the desire for providing amusement/entertainment.
Popular music has quickly earned appreciation from people of all cultures,
not just by the Americans, because of its clarity of message, and the relatively liberal
manner of presentation to the listening crowd. Although it has only sprouted in the
20th century, its impact to the people is enormous, that it has driven much crowd
and has taken many new and varied forms.

4. Emphasis on Voice. The singer’s voice is given prominence in a pop song, as well
as the clear message he/she conveys

recording team, company or public.
Philippine Popular Music
It started with Bobby Gonzales’ Hahabol- habol (Hot Pursuit), a local version of the
rock and roll songs of the1950s, and Rico Puno’s Luneta, a local adaptation of The Way
We Were. This immediately clicked with the youth and eventually gained wide
acceptance even among the “burgis”
Manila Sound
Songs using a colloquial language called Taglish, a combination of
Tagalog and English.
Among the proponents of the Manila Sound were the Hotdog,
Cinderella, The Rainmakers, and the Apo Hiking Society.
Apo Hiking Society (1973-2010)
"The Beatles of the Philippines.” The group had its fledgling beginnings in 1969 at the
Ateneo de Manila high school, with thirteen members.
Philippine Jazz Music
Philippine musicians have also been inspired by jazz music. Among them are jazz
pianist and recording artist Boy Katindig, who comes from the well-known clan of
musicians that includes jazz piano legend Romy Katindig and saxophonist Eddie Katindig.
The Katindig family pioneered Latin jazz in Manila.
Philippine Rock
The year 1973 saw the birth of Philippine or “Pinoy” rock music which successfully
merged the rock beat with Filipino lyrics.
This new sound was introduced by the legendary Juan de la Cruz Band (with their
song Ang Himig Natin) which had for its members Joey “Pepe” Smith, Wally Gonzales, and
the originator of Jeproks, Mike Hanopol, who later became a major symbol of Pinoy rock.
