ESSAY TEMPLATE
Question 1: In relation to the Covid-19 Pandemic, what definition, claim or dimension would you use
to define globalization and why? Do you think the process of globalization influenced the spread and
speed of Covid-19 infection among individuals? Why?
Answer:
I defined globalization based on its dimension, “Globalization as a political process”, because
the current pandemic was caused by opening the territorial border from the other country
and vice-versa hence, many people have been affected instead of one country where the
COVID-19 originated. Opening a territorial border means that country is ready for everything
comes in its way, may it be opportunities or threats. Opening border meant that you want
more knowledge, resources and other more benefits thus, creating relationships and power
through political alliances. Yes, I think the process of globalization influence the spread and
speed of COVID-19 infection among individuals, because like I said earlier, opening a
territorial border can have many opportunities but danger lurks everywhere and that includes
the COVID-19 infection.
Question 2: For a student and youth like you, what are the good and bad effects of global
corporations? Do you think the benefits outweigh the costs, why? What can be done in the
international arena so as to lessen the crises brought by TNCs and MNCs?
Answer:
For me, the good effects of global corporations are the following; they give job opportunities,
new knowledge, improving oneself, advancement of technologies, makes some troublesome
situations easy like accounting system and many more. If there is good, then there is bad
effects like pollution, deterioration of environment, slowly reducing of the country’s
resources, inequality, low value of human resources and many more. No, I think the cost
outweigh the benefits, because the need for self-improvement and a country’s advancement
and development in exchange of the destruction of the environment and some of its people
is not worth it. What is the use of development if it is tainted by blood and a future of no
trees and animals involved. Some countries already implemented few international or local
laws that in favor to the preservation of the environment, and some are not like in United
States wherein, they recently abolished the law related to contaminated air caused by the
cars’ engine. The crisis brought by TNC’s and MNC’s can be lessen through participating of all
countries, if possible, in strict implementation and execution of laws and regulations for
safeguarding of environment
Question 3: What are the characteristics of the state? How does globalization affect change to the
state? Do you think these changes are evident in the Philippines and how? Do you think the economy
should be prioritized more than the state or vice versa? What do you think are ways to reconcile or
harmonize the economy and the state in the era of globalization?
Answer:
The characteristics of the state are the following: It consists of a territory, the territory is
sovereign, within its territory the state has the monopoly both of law and of the powers of
coercion with some exceptions, the national state rules its citizens or subjects directly and not
through intermediate authorities, direct government and administration of the inhabitants by
the central authorities of a nation state implies a certain degree of standardization or even
homogenization in the treatment of the inhabitants and while a nation-state composed of
people without political rights or positive participation in its affairs and in such cases the state
is considered to represent ‘the people’, and ‘the people’ to be the source of sovereignty, or at
least to give the state legitimacy. Because of globalization, the states were affected in terms
of power, political aspect, social aspect, economic aspect and territoriality. War began
because of different motives with same goal and it is domination of all countries that led to
WWI and WWII. Yes, it is evident through the influence of three states that were once
dominated the Philippines and by means of colonization many things affects and influence
the Filipinos including their traditions and cultures and that led to where us now. I think the
economy should be prioritized more than the state. I think the only way is that along the
development of an economy it should also have enough restrictions to protect the states and
its people.

Question 4: Do you think international institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, etc. can
affect effective change to developing countries such as the Philippines? How? In relation, as a global
citizen, how can you contribute in addressing international concerns in terms of health, environment,
poverty, etc?
Answer:
Yes, I think so. They can affect the Philippines through technological advancement, alliances
and especially through funding. Through the help of World Bank, Philippines’s economy and
government are still standing because of the continuous approve of loan support. Being part
of United Nations means an alliances and alliances results peace and security of that state
with other states and peace and security ends with the continuous development of a country.
As a global citizen I can only contribute in addressing international concerns through
participating different organizations that promote protection of environment, improvements
of health and alleviation of poverty. Because I believe that the betterment of all comes in
every small thing a person do and just by aggregating it makes it visible to others so that can
influence them to do the same.
Bonus: Write a discussion of what you learned from this class for the past 6 weeks which are not
mentioned in your answers from the previous questions.
Answer:
In the past 6 weeks, I have learned new knowledge that centered globalization. First is its
different definition that came from different people; its arguments which consists of
rejectionists, skeptics and modifiers, and also claims, dimensions and ideologies related to
globalization. Second, about the emergence of capital societies, effects of industrial evolution
like transforming social classes and affecting agriculture, and integration of markets. Third,
about economic globalization and its definition and effects to the states and its people like
the establishment of Gold standard and Bretton Woods system, but have been abolished
later on because it is not effective enough and from unilateral trade order to multilateralism.
Lastly, the discussion about the interstate system and global governance’s results, like the
formation of different organizations and alliances that promotes their own benefits and
spreading their power and connections.
