Philosophy Statement

I am in the field of early childhood education because of the fact that I have always loved

working with children and it is something that I feel called to do. Though I am still not sure if

teaching is for me, I know that this field offers many different careers with lots of different

opportunities. I love to see children grow into themselves and grow over time and I think that

will help me in this field. I enjoy spending time with infants, children and teenagers, so it does

not matter to me what age they necessarily are. What I also enjoy is the psychology and social

science aspect of this field and learning about how they function and develop as they grow.

One feature of teaching young children that I find interesting is teaching them physical,

social and emotional development. I think being well rounded is very important when it comes to

becoming a healthy human. I really appreciate how mental health has become much more

prominent now and is becoming more incorporated into daily life and I think that is very

important as well. Another feature of teaching young children that I find interesting is problem

solving. I think that teaching them smart and healthy ways to problem solve and work with

others will be the most important things they can carry through their lives as they face obstacles

and try to overcome them.

Despite the fact that all children learn differently, I think that mixing visual, learning, and

hands on is how they can learn the best. Each child is more inclined to one of these types of

learning, so I think incorporating a bit of each will help reach each student better. I also think

that working in groups is very beneficial for them. This way, they can ask for help and learn

from their peers. I also think working in groups will allow them to make stronger relationships

with the other students, and having a sense of community will make them feel safer and more

comfortable in the classroom setting.

I believe that the curriculum model that I feel most closely aligns with my philosophy is

the Waldorf approach. For me, creativity was always important to me growing up and I think that

it is something that should be encouraged in young children. Especially at this young of an age,

they can tap into their imaginations so easily and that should not just be brushed aside. The

Waldorf approach focuses on their imagination and their creativity and uses that as its central

focus. I believe that this type of environment is a wonderful way to help children grow into

themselves and their creativity and it allows them to explore the freedom of their imagination.

To be better prepared for working with children, I think I need much more experience. I

have had experience working in my church’s nursery and babysitting, but it was very much

guided and I did not have a lot of freedom with how I cared for the children. I also think that I

need more work experience as well since I have only done volunteer work. I think once I am not

so busy with school that will allow me to get the work experience that I need though. I also think

I need more training since I have only taken online classes. I think going in somewhere and

being guided through the daily rituals of the program would make me feel much more prepared.

The reason why I would like to make a contribution to the field of child development is

because of how much patience and love I have for children. Children have always been a source

of happiness for me and I find that I have a lot of patience for them and that is something that is

very important in this field. I want them to feel important and cared for and I want them to feel

as though they can truly be themselves and be free. I would do this by communicating with them

as much as I can along with their parents as well. I would also incorporate lots of fun activities

and crafts into our schedule to let them know that they are free to use their imagination.

In closing, I feel there are many aspects which make up a quality Early Childhood

Education program. One of these is how a teacher presents themselves and conducts the

classroom. Ethics and integrity are very important when it comes to professionalism in the

classroom and observation in the classroom is extremely important because it allows you to gain

information about the children and children as individuals and with this information, make

adjustments or build on this information to boost their learning experience. When it comes to

family relationships in early childhood education, keeping the parents involved and informed

with things such as new parent orientations and updating them will allow them to feel

comfortable to ask questions and be more engaged in their child's growth and development. The

classroom setting is also a teacher itself. From this bit of information, this knowledge allows a

teacher to be more aware of the impact that the environment has on the student, and it allows

them to now put this knowledge to use by purposely setting up the environment in more specific

ways to enhance and induce learning. Of course it is also important to consider every student and

their family’s differences and respect that. Every family has their own cultures and values and

that should be kept in mind and respected. So there are many aspects that a teacher must keep in

mind but most importantly, it is keeping an open mind and maintaining patience and appreciation

for each of their students.
