Prestressing in Combination of High Strength Steel and Concrete

This document discusses prestressed concrete design using the internal resisting couple method. It considers prestressed concrete as a combination of high strength steel and concrete similar to reinforced concrete. The internal resisting couple method analyzes the beam as if it were an elastic concrete beam using statics principles. Tension exists in the steel and compression in the concrete, forming an internal resisting couple against external bending moments. An example problem is provided to calculate the stresses at the midspan and end section of a prestressed concrete beam using this method.

PRESTRESSING IN COMBINATION OF

HIGH STRENGTH STEEL AND CONCRETE

High strength steel and concrete
This considers the pre-stressed concrete as combination of steel and concrete similar to RCC.
Tension exists in steel and compression in concrete. These two form a internal resisting couple
against external moment produced by loads.
•This concept is to consider PC as a combination of steel and concrete similar to RC.
•Two materials form a resisting couple against external moment.
•after cracking this concept works
•From this point , PC is no longer a strange type of design. It is rather an extension and
modification of the applications of reinforced concrete to include steels of higher strength.
INTERNAL RESISTING COUPLE METHOD
In internal resisting couple method, the beam is analyzed as
if it were a plain concrete elastic beam using the basic
principles of statics.

 C-Line: Line-of-pressure in the concrete

 T-Line: c.g. of steel line

 𝑓= ± ; P=c and M =Ph

 𝑓= ± ; for rectangular section

INTERNAL RESISTING COUPLE METHOD
Example:

1.) A prestressed concrete simple beam having a cross section of 250mm x 600m is subjected to
prestressing force in steel eventually reduce to 1600 kN due to losses acting on the parabolic
tendons shown. The beam carries a total uniform distributed load of 30 kN/m including beam’s
weight. Using Internal resisting couple method, calculate the total stresses at midspan and at the
end section of the beam.
INTERNAL RESISTING COUPLE METHOD
SOLUTION:
a.) At midspan:
² ( )²
𝑀= = = 240 𝑘𝑁. 𝑚

M = Ph ; h = = 150mm

h = e+e’ = 100+e’
150 = 100+e’
e’=50mm

Ce = 1600(0.05) = 80 kN.m Net moment

( )
± ( )²

𝑓 = −10.667 ± 5.333

𝑓 = −10.667 − 5.333 = 16 𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝑓 = −10.667 + 5.333 = −5.334 𝑀𝑃𝑎

At the end section:

e=0; M = 0; e’ =0
𝑓 = −10.667 𝑀𝑃𝑎 𝑓 = −10.667 𝑀𝑃𝑎
