As a result, the lungs fill with fluid, airway resistance increases while lung compliance decreases, worsening work of breathing and gas exchange. This causes hypoxemia, or low blood oxygen levels. ARDS is diagnosed using tests like chest x-rays, blood tests, and pulmonary artery catheters. Treatments include ventilation, oxygen therapy, and managing complications.
