Lab Report: 01
Apparatus:
Oscilloscope
Digital Multimeter
Function Generator
DC power supply
Theory of operation:
In this lab we learned about the function and usage of
a) Oscilloscope: Oscilloscope is the most important instrument available to the Practicing
Technician or engineer. It permits the visual display of a signal that can reveal a range of
information regarding the operating characteristics of a circuit or system that is not available with
a standard multimeter.
It has 2 channel labeled channel 1 and channel 2 and two basic knobs one for volts per division
and other for time/Period. For finding voltage and period of a waveform following formula
should be adopted.
Signal voltage (unknown) = voltage sensitivity V/cm × deflection cm
Period of waveform = horizontal sensitivity (s/cm) × deflection (cm)

c) Function Generator: The function Generator is a supply that typically provides a sinusoidal,
square-wave, and triangular waveform for a range of frequencies and amplitudes. Although the
frequency of the function generator can be set by the dial position and appropriate multiplier, the
oscilloscope can be used to precisely set the output frequency.
We can change the waveform to 3 types sin, triangular and rectangular. Adjust frequency,
Amplitude and offset accordingly explained in the video lecture.
d) Regulated DC Power Supply: A regulated power supply is an embedded circuit; it converts
unregulated AC into a constant DC. With the help of a rectifier it converts AC supply into DC. Its
function is to supply a stable voltage, to a circuit or device that must be operated within certain
power supply limits. The output from the regulated power supply may be alternating or
unidirectional, but is nearly always DC
Conclusion:
In this lab we were introduced to basic function and working of oscilloscope, Function Generator and
DMM. Oscilloscope is used to see waveform in its window we can give our desired signal from function
generator and measure voltage current and resistance from digital multimeter.
