Processes
Magma
- is a mixture of molten rocks, minerals
and gases.
- it originates in the lower part of the Earth’s
crust and in the upper portion of the mantle
known as asthenosphere.
Volcanism
- Is a phenomenon in which materials are erupted from
the Earth's interior onto the surface.
Plutonism
- is the process by which magma rises through the
crust and crystallizes as an intrusive igneous rock
beneath the Earth’s surface. Pluton is a generic word
for any igneous intrusive rock body.
Tectonic Processes
are those that build up the surface of the earth. They are revealed
by tectonic structures such as faults and folds.
Continental Drift
– is the movement of the Earth's continents
relative to each other, thus appearing to "drift"
across the ocean bed.
Alfred Wegener
– was a German polar researcher, geophysicist
and meteorologist.
– the originator of the theory of continental drift
by hypothesizing in 1912 that the continents are
slowly drifting around the Earth.
Tectonic Plate Theory
states that the Earth's lithosphere is made up individual p
lates that are broken down into over a dozen large and s
mall pieces of solid rock.
– explain the movements of the Earth's lithosphere
that have formed the landscape features we see ac
ross the globe today.
Plate Boundaries
Convergent Boundary
– Oceanic-Continental Convergence
(Trenches, Earthquakes, Mountain Ranges
& Volcanic Arc)
– Oceanic-Oceanic Convergence (Trenches
& Volcanic Arc)
– Continental-Continental Convergence
(Mountain Ranges
Plate Boundaries
Divergent Boundary
▪ seafloor spreading
▪ rift valley
Plate Boundaries
Transform Boundary
The result of two massive plates pushing against one another is that massive
amounts of energy build up. Occasionally this energy is released suddenly
in the form of large earthquakes.
Types of Folds
Types of Folds
Types of Folds
Earthquakes
- Evidence of present-day tectonic activity.
- Are ground motions of Earth caused when accumulating
tectonic stress is relieved by the sudden displacement of
rocks along a fault.
