Usability Memo

TO: Dr. Amy Hodges

FROM: Toni-Ann Samuels
DATE: November 28th, 2020
RE: Usability Test Results on Toni-Ann’s Instruction Set

This memo will report on my test protocol and how effective my instructions of replacing
a convex mirror to the specific model Kenworth T680 truck as well as my results and revisions I
make for my instruction set. The goal of my instruction set was to safely guide the truck driver
through replacing a convex mirror to clearly view blind spots.
One November 28th, 2020, I tested my instruction set on 2 potential users. The users were
told to imagine themselves as a truck driver that has not been driving a truck for too long and
noticed a broken mirror and never replaced one before. The users were asked to go through the
instructions at their own pace, and in their mind, try to do what the instructions were telling them
to do, removing all bias and preconceived knowledge on the topic, if they had preexisting
knowledge.

Clarity
The extent to which my groupmates rated the clarity of my instructions were that they did
not strongly agree my instructions were clear, but they agreed it was clear enough. Both chose
“Agree”. Users found themselves confused at one step or another while going through the
instructions. One user found themselves confused at step 5. They blamed their confusion on
unfamiliar terms like “backing plate”. This confusion hindered them as they went through the
entire instruction set because these terms are instrumental and necessary for explaining the set.
The other user said they were confused at step 6 because they were not sure what to look for in
terms of mobility of the mirror. Even though they were instructed to push on both sides of the
mirror, they were not sure what to look for after the action. They were not sure of the extent of
movement and whether or not said movement was appropriate indicating they did it correctly or
incorrectly. Any type of movement would not automatically mean proper installation.

Visuals
Users were asked if they referred to the visuals in the set. Both potential users said they
referred to the visuals that were placed at steps 3 and 5 the most. Users claimed the visuals
helped clear any confusion up from the instruction they read before. Users stated visuals depicted
a clear image of what to do at the current step they were looking at. When asked specifically
about the usefulness of the visual at step 3, both users said “Yes” to needing a visual at step 3
because they were confused when the “center piece” was referenced and the visual helped them
to figure out what the center piece was. The center piece and other objects are identified in the
diagram added for the planned revisions.

Recommendation
When users were asked if they would recommend this instruction set to others, both
potential users said “Yes” to recommending this to a friend or other individual. This shows the
instructions were useful and clear for others to understand.
Conclusion & Planned Revisions
Throughout the process of creating my instruction set and submitting it for
improvements, I made many revisions.
 I specified the type of truck in which to put a specific convex mirror on.
 I added pictures to certain steps in order to ensure clarity.
 I needed to change the order of steps to be more cohesive.
After battling the instructions, I decided to change up my instruction to replacing a convex
mirror as opposed to adding one. Based on the usability protocol results, I will need to adjust
steps 3 and 5 because the potential users showed confusion.
 In step 5 to alleviate confusion, I added a diagram users can revert to when unfamiliar
words arise. With knowing what an object is, users are now able to go through the
instructions and not be confused with something as simple as unfamiliar words.
 In step 6 to alleviate confusion, I added what they need to look for in terms of mobility in
the mirror. I added that as they press on either side of the mirror, the corresponding side
should move down with the pressure they applied.
I also found that the visuals I used were very beneficial for the different steps. Potential users
stated they gained extra clarity after looking at visuals telling me there is no need for revisions
on visuals.
Overall, this usability test helped me understand the clarity of my instructions and what
could enhance the clarity of the instructions like visuals, diagrams, and the extent to which others
would recommend the instruction set to others they know.
