LESSON 7

Pre-Assessment

Complete the following Statement

1. The United State is rich because It has a vast territory and resources, and enjoys
uncontested sovereign authority over them. It has safety and internal stability, and their
population is well educated, hyper-advanced scientific/industrial capability are firmly
established. In this country has a lot of manpower and personal liberty and very little
stops people from being financially successful if they are disciplined and apply
themselves solely to their ambitions. In addition, in terms of business and industry are
relatively efficient and goal orientated. Furthermore, it has had a more consistent
commitment to fair and free markets over the last one hundred years than any other
country.
2. Japan is a developed country because they put a ton in the Human Resources in the
field of training and wellbeing to succeed and has a decent connection among work
and the executives. Their arrangement of administration is steady and predictable
throughout the long term. Likewise, Japan has no normal assets, so they imported
required assets for improvement and they are created economies on the planet. This
nation is grown additionally in light of the fact that it is an industrialized unrestricted
economy and has the second most innovatively amazing nation on the planet following
the United States. Japan additionally has the third biggest economy after the US and
China. Also, driving maker of engine vehicles, electronic hardware, machine
apparatuses, steel and nonferrous metals, ships, synthetic compounds, materials,
prepared nourishments. Japan has an exceptional mechanical improvement plan and
furthermore profoundly relies upon unfamiliar exchange.
3. The Philippines is poor because of instructive administration is excessively
learned. Schools never develop certainty of its student. Everything depends on
grades. Our nation is s a rich with regards to resources, yet defilement is
widespread as it previously turned into a propensity for pretty much every
lawmaker and any elevated level characters. Overpopulation is likewise the
motivation behind why are nation is considered as poor as a result of destitution
that our chief can't deal with our locale. Furthermore, it has deficient transportation
framework, absence of popular assets, and low-income fares and due to
expanding the assessments in our locale. As I would see it, a ton of Filipinos are
poor on the grounds that a ton are not ready to face challenges from beginning
from zero to where they need to be throughout everyday life. Most would prefer to
pick to discover work abroad as opposed to firing up their very own business from
here when actually whenever considered, one can make a similar measure of
cash that they can abroad if just most are not into moment delight. Besides that,
the majority of us weren't instructed to work from the get-go in life since most are
pre-molded to get decent training to get a lucrative occupation as opposed to
urging a kid to engage in building their own business. The vast majority I know are
settled with a 8-hour work and wouldn't have any desire to work additional hours
contrasted with different identities where individuals are more than ready to shuffle
a couple of tasks to stay aware of life's accommodations.

4. Hunger exists in Somalia, Africa because regularly being entwined with each other.
When all is said in done, the chief reasons for hunger incorporate neediness, struggle,
atmosphere and climate, absence of interest in farming, and flimsy business sectors.
The contemporary world 3
People living in destitution frequently can't manage the cost of food of adequate quality
or amount to carry on with a sound life. And having Strife and savagery can have
immediate and circuitous effects on all degrees of the food framework, prompting food
instability and yearning. Struggle frequently puts imperatives on work and pay
openings, which influences a person's capacity to secure food. Struggle can likewise
influence fares and imports, which can prompt restricted food accessibility and
reasonableness. Accessibility of food can likewise be influenced if assets (land,
hardware, and so on) used to deliver food are demolished during seasons of
contention.

5. Australia is a wealthy country because it had stable government, sound legislative

issues, and colossal normal assets and innovative clinical gear and administrations,
which are less value touchy and have lower delivering costs that makes their nation
wealth and their unregulated economy is involved four primary segments, Trade,
Manufacturing, Services, and Financing. In this economy prosperous incorporate
private endeavors, progressed innovative turn of events, industrialization, and huge
scope creations. They had improved duty framework is good both for people and for
organizations, and brought about some huge accomplishes. Also, as far as their work
profitability development and having positive work exertion and quality, Technology and
advancement.
6. Singapore is more developed than Thailand because Singapore has a
profoundly evolved and effective unregulated economy and has capitalized on its
restricted regular and human resources. It has delighted in a surprisingly open
and defilement free climate, stable costs, and a for each capita GDP higher than
that of most created nations. Its economy relies intensely upon sends out,
especially in purchaser gadgets, data innovation items, drugs, and on a
developing money related administrations area. While Thailand is with an all-
around created framework, a free-endeavor economy, by and large favorable to
speculation arrangements, and solid fare ventures, Thailand accomplished
consistent development due to a great extent to modern and horticulture sends
out - generally hardware, rural wares, cars and parts, and prepared nourishments.
Since Thailand had a Feudal arrangement of support, Lack of rule of law or rather
requirement and Endemic debasement.

7. Many Filipinos wants to migrate in Canada because numerous Filipinos have a

decent order of the English language, they can secure positions and rapidly subside
into their new homes upon appearance. Also, they imagine that they can get an
appropriate line of work in Canada and there's a great deal of chance that they can get,
since Canada is rich nation and need a greater number of laborers than in the
Philippines.
8. Luxembourg is the richest country in Europe because it has the most noteworthy
per capita GDP of all nations on the landmass, which makes it the most extravagant
nation in Europe just as the most extravagant nation on the planet. Luxembourg has
been steady for quite a long time, and great administration has encouraged its financial
turn of events. Its iron and steel area speaks to 7% of its economy, and it is home to
ArcelorMittal which is the world's biggest steelmaker. Luxembourg has been enthused
about building up its innovation and monetary administrations businesses in a transition
to expand its economy. An expected 155 financial organizations have tasks in the
State, huge numbers of which are unfamiliar possessed. Luxembourg appreciates a

very rapid correspondence framework combined with numerous server farms, which
empowers the nation to give huge worldwide availability to the global organization.
Government impetuses, low corporate duties, a great business climate, and a steady
workforce all support the nation's monetary flourishing.
9. Bangladesh is challenged by poverty because of the cause on overpopulation. As
we probably are aware, if the populace can't be upheld enough by the land's current
circumstance, territory size and assets, the land becomes overpopulated. Bangladesh
has a minuscule region regarding populace. Thus, assets can't be similarly conveyed,
and the destitution hazard is high. Likewise, in light of absence of proficiency among
the individuals. On the off chance that the pace of education might have been
overhauled, the pace of destitution might have been decreased too. Mindfulness about
family arranging, death rate, food security, protein admission, persistent illnesses, and
etcetera would possibly have been spread appropriately if proficiency rate is expanded.

10. Haiti has a very low GDP because Haiti is an unregulated economy with low work
expenses and levy free admittance to the US for a significant number of its fares. Two-
fifths of all Haitians rely upon the agrarian area, basically little scope resource
cultivating, which stays defenseless against harm from regular catastrophic events.
Neediness, defilement, weakness to catastrophic events, and low degrees of training
for a great part of the populace speak to probably the most genuine obstacles to Haiti's
financial development. Settlements are the essential wellspring of unfamiliar trade,
equal to in excess of a fourth of GDP, and almost twofold the consolidated estimation
of Haitian fares and unfamiliar direct venture.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE EARTH’S WEALTH React to the figure below:

1. Interpret the pie graph by providing at 5 statements about it.

 The graph shows the distribution of earth’s wealth. The top 10% of the richest adults
hold 85% of the world’s total wealth. Nearly half 40% of the world’s wealth belongs to
the top 1% the richest adults. A study by the World Institute for Development
Economics Research at United Nations University reports that the richest 1% of adults
alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10% of adults
accounted for 85% of the world total. The bottom half of the world adult population
owned 1% of global wealth.] Moreover, another study found that the richest 2% own
more than half of global household assets
 However, the 90% percent of adult worldwide only owns 15% of earth’s wealth. While
99% of adult worldwide owns 60% of earth’s wealth.
 This shows the unequal distribution of wealth in the world throughout the population.
According to the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth, "the
world distribution of wealth is much more unequal than that of income
 Those who belong to the top richest class have higher income compare to the lower
class. The top poorest individuals struggle and will always have less access to the
world’s wealth.
2. How do you feel about distribution of the earth’s wealth?
 Mostly of the earth’s wealth belongs to the top richest adult in the world, ,
demonstrating that there was an inconsistent dissemination of the earth’s wealth and
economic opportunities. Plainly the individuals who are rich will proceed to encourage

and grow their benefit while the individuals who are in the edge of neediness will stay
poor and miserable.

The dissemination of abundance contrasts from m the pay appropriation in that it takes
a gander at the monetary circulation of responsibility for resources in a general public,
as opposed to the current pay of individuals that society.

Health and sanitation problems aren’t handled very well resulting to this kind of situation.
Pagpag is getting popular today to those people living in slums. It even became their form of
living to make money. This kind of situation should be focused by the health organizations
here in the Philippines. If this will not be treated immediately, then many people will suffer
from garbage food and put their health at risk.
This documentary made us realized how lucky we are to be an individual who does
not currently work for our own living. Just as shown in the documentary videos, even as
young as 7 year old kids endure the pain of disguised child abuse just to fill their stomachs
with food from restaurants that they term as “Pagpag”. Mixed fish, beef, pork, and meat of
other sort are washed with water and cooked together. Disgust and bigotry should not have
any slot in our minds as their fellow Filipinos. And the most important is the true
understanding and support for the majority who suffers a lot just to survive the harsh realities
and obstacles of life.
This is recommended to everyone especially to Filipinos who aren’t aware to the
situations of poor families. This could be a way to open them to the harsh realities. And
maybe they could think of any way to help our fellow Filipinos in their own simple ways.

understand how real the hardships of life are. Poverty will really cause man to exert every
effort that he has in order to feed his family and stuff his stomach with food brought by a few
pesos that he has earned. Destitute Filipino families will walk in the streets of
commercialized Manila begging for waste food from restaurant chains like McDonalds and
Jollibee. They term the food that they get from these restaurants as Pagpag. They will
segregate the mixed food that they get and ‘sanitizes’ eatable parts by washing it three times
with hot water. They will sell it to carinderia owners who would make them in to two famous
Filipino delicacies: fried Pagpag and adobong Pagpag. The two dishes cost 10 pesos and 15
pesos. Because of its low price, a lot of families are attracted in buying the cooked Pagpag
just to calm their grumbling stomachs. They become unmindful of whatever bacteria causing

After watching our given documentary video entitled Would you eat recycled landfill meat?”
- BBC News: we had the option to see how genuine the difficulties of life are. Neediness will truly
make man apply each exertion that he has so as to take care of his family and stuff his stomach
with food brought by a couple of pesos that he has acquired. Penniless Filipino families will stroll
in the roads of popularized Manila gathering for squander food from café networks like McDonalds
and Jollibee. They term the food that they get from these eateries as Pagpag. They will isolate the
blended food that they get and sterilizes edible parts by washing it multiple times with boiling
water. They will offer it to carinderia proprietors who might make them in to Filipino delights:
Kalderetang Pagpag. These dishes cost 10 pesos and 15 pesos. Due to its low value, a ton of
families are pulled in purchasing the cooked Pagpag just to quiet their protesting stomachs. They
become ignorant of whatever microbes causing infection might be the occupants of the food that
they feast in.
Since Pagpag is an assortment of trash and extra food, it tends to be home of
microorganisms causing sicknesses. Relating this to medical services, reality discloses to us that
it is not something to be appalled to on the grounds that these individuals don't have some other
choice to get food. Taking a gander at their current circumstance, they truly must choose the
option to acclimate to what they are prepared to do and what is accessible for them. To meet their
fundamental needs, they scan the trash for their ordinary food. Furthermore, since Pagpag costs
sensible enough for them to get, it turned into a staple aspect of their ordinary feast reliant on the
couple of pesos that they procure each and every day. With respect to these needy individuals,
their recognition impacts their wellbeing conduct. They accept that pagpag is sheltered to eat
since it is sterilized. What they can be sure of is that it could bring microbes that cooking can't
murder, for example, Salmonella. What occurs here is the thing that we called cross pollution. The
food from trash contains Salmonella, which is brought by the salivation of the main individual
eating it. Unwittingly, these microbes are communicated to the following individual. Comparable to
Smiths model of wellbeing, the facts demonstrate that these individuals living in ghettos didn't
neglect to adjust to their requirements. Some of them are resistant to the microscopic organisms
and sicknesses on the grounds that their insusceptible framework became acclimated to it. This is
the motivation behind why they feel solid and solid yet actually, microorganisms can be discovered
covering up in their digestive organs and stomach.
The contemporary world 9
Today, people especially those who are living in the provincial areas want to improve their
lives, so they work hard. They even migrate in Manila because they believe that there is a better
opportunity for them to find jobs, earn money and buy things they need and desire. Manila is now

And at the same time, they reproduce and reproduce, which makes it harder for them because
they’re going to feed more children than before.
I believed Philippines, despite the fact that we are plentiful in natural resources, needs
numerous viewpoints. Wellbeing and sterilization issues aren't taken care of very well coming
about to this sort of circumstance. Pagpag is getting famous today to those individuals living in
ghettos. It even turned into their type of living to bring in cash. This sort of circumstance ought to
be engaged by the wellbeing associations here in the Philippines. On the off chance that this won't
be dealt with promptly, at that point numerous individuals will experience the ill effects of trash
food and put their wellbeing in danger.Hunger has been linked to the spread of pagpag food and
the food crisis in 2008 was said to be the cause in the rise of poverty in the
Philippines. The National Statistical Coordination Board recommended the administration
of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to reduce poverty. Department of Social Welfare and
Development Secretary Dinky Soliman said that the government has been addressing the issue
and helping the poor through feeding programs and conditional cash transfers. In 2015, a survey
conducted by the Social Weather Stations revealed that incidence of hunger in the Philippines was
reduced but the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines-Nagkaisa attributed the decrease of
hunger to the rapid spreading of pagpag. Zero waste management is seen as a viable solution in
stopping the proliferation of pagpag food and through developing and implementing rapid and
sustained economic growth policies and programs, in areas such as health, education, nutrition
and sanitation, allowing the poor to participate and contribute to the growth. Providing all people
with access to basic social services including education, health care, adequate food, sanitation,
shelter and clean water.

This documentary made us realize that we are so fortunate to be a person who doesn't
right now work for our own living. Similarly, as appeared in the narrative recordings, even as
youngsters bear the torment of masked kid misuse just to fill their stomachs with food from
eateries that they term as Pagpag. Blended fish, hamburger, pork, and meat of other sort are
washed with water and cooked together. Nauseate and bias ought not have any space in our
brains as their kindred Filipinos. Furthermore, the most significant is the genuine comprehension
and backing for the greater part who endures a ton just to endure the cruel real factors and
obstructions of life.

This is prescribed to everybody particularly to Filipinos who don't know to the

circumstances of helpless families. This could be an approach to open them to the cruel real
factors. What's more, perhaps they could think about any approach to help our kindred Filipinos in
their own basic manners.

LESSON 8

POST READING

1. Differentiate regionalization from globalization

Globalization centers in various angles, for example, financial and social cycle, culture,
nature and political philosophy. Generally speaking, Globalization shows the development and
trades of; merchandise, administrations, capital, culture and human work all through the world.
Globalization influences every single country that is associated with construct a solid relationship
and impacts their own governmental issues and culture This also a strategy that refers to the use
of the same business strategy by multinational companies in all the markets they operate in. it also
exceeds regional boundaries; products are being promoted without region-specific focus. Example
of Globalization and Regionalization Strategy is a TWITTER APP. While Regionalization is a
conceived as an undirected process of growing interdependence which originates in the actions of
individuals, groups and corporations rather than through the deliberate actions of national
governments. It is the tendency for patterns of economic and political cooperation to develop
between states in the same region. In economics regionalization or sometimes termed as
localized is a strategy in economics which focuses on a particular region or Area – It employs
differentiation based on regions. The making of territorial settlements and that intends to expand
the participation, incorporation, or political association between states in a particular area.
Regionalization joins states areas in a nation, also nations that have a place with similar districts
displays this marvel. As a reality, Regionalization subordinate to globalization. Example of
Regionalization strategy is America vs. Muslim countries

2. What are the factors that lead to greater integration of Asian regions? Give example
of each.

The factors that lead to greater integration of Asian regions are Mutual Benefit, Trade,
Similar Culture, Common Goals, Similar Security Needs, and Trade of Agreement.

Mutual Benefit - when it comes to trade, these nations can readily supply each other’s needs.

Example: One country always has an own interest; bilateral and multilateral meeting are
agreements that takes economic actions that benefits all countries involved.

Trade - the world economy is intertwined with each other whether we like it or not. We all want or
need something from another part of the world, and global trade facilitate that.
The contemporary world 12
Example: China is known as one of the big producers of steel in the world, however they
lack of minerals such as iron, nickel, and copper that are ingredients in making steel, so they often
trade with nations rich in minerals 9such as the Philippines) leading to better integration of both
nations.

Similar Culture – The cultures of Asia is diverse but they do share many things. This makes it an
easier fit during times of integrations. The people of this region are generally alike in
appearance, temperament which is seemingly peaceful. They tend to get along quite well
even on an individual level.

Example: Some countries that should had culture indirect process that they binds, in
making negotiations and consensus between those countries were greater integrations.

Common Goals – The Asian region recognizes the mutual benefit of a slow integration. The
territories involved are not far from each other and the industriousness of its population can
work as a powerful negotiating block against those from parts of the world.

Example: The shared objective of helpless countries is to expand their financial status of
their nation, with the assistance of the huge nations that expects to help and advance worldwide
thriving. This activity lead to a superior honesty of all countries included.

Similar Security Needs – Aside from small localized rebels, this association needs only to
contend with foreign-supported terrorist groups which are usually handled well.

Example: One of the issues looked by western and southeast Asian locales is the danger
of psychological warfare, along these lines, countries set up relationship for their public
protections, they regularly haggle in managing Isis illegal intimidation and other insubordination. In
the Marawi, Philippines the entire city was heavily influenced by the Isis fear monger gathering,
with the assistance of the UN and the United States, Marawi now finds a sense of contentment.

Trade Agreement – is a wide-ranging taxes, tariff and trade treaty that often includes investment
guarantees. It exists when two or more countries agree on terms that help them trade with
each other.

Example: Countries are frequently exchange; essentially economic accords are set up in at
least two nations. It assists with controlling the measure of fare and import in the worldwide
worker's organization, consequently making a connection between all the nations in question and
lead to a more prominent reconciliation of Global exchange organizations.

3. How do Asian States confront the contemporary challenges of globalization,

regionalization, and pandemic.

States in Asia have chosen to embrace the global economy. During the Asia’s boom years,
globalization was viewed as a tool for strengthening national power, rather than as a potential
threat. This view was reinforced by the belief in Asia that governments could participate in the
global economy without altering domestic political structures and practices. Across the region
growing wealth often coexisted with authoritarianism. Therefore, Asian State confront the
contemporary challenges of globalization through embracing the norms such as transparency,

accountability, and the rule of law – concepts that form the backbone of democratic societies –
appear to have suffered less from the financial crisis that their authoritarian counterparts.

Asian nations address the difficulties of globalization, regionalization, and pandemic through
coordinated effort of ASIAN nations to make COVID-19 antibody. The conventional foundation
gives or loan budgetary help to Asian nations that experienced the effects of catastrophic events.
Agricultural nations rely upon imports for basic COVID-19 items, governments worldwide have
executed new import and fare measures as a component of their wellbeing and economies
convention.

Asia and the Pacific enters' 2020 with more fragile financial conditions, all around the world
just as territorially and expected to relax further, not least due to the developing Corona infection
2019 circumstance. This pandemic genuinely disturbed the worldwide monetary development
which prompted an abrupt lull in assembling, exchange, work and the travel industry exercises.
Individuals consistently in more than 150 nations are getting contaminated by this COVID 19 and
influenced both nearby and worldwide exercises. Beside this pandemic, there are other worldwide
and local issues that frustrates the working of different social orders. For example, financial
breakdown, treat of psychological warfare and cataclysmic events. Every nation is giving a valiant
effort to confront the said issues, with the assistance of worldwide commission in worldwide and
provincial financial movement. The WHO discharges rules to assist nations with keeping up basic

Identify the strength of the Philippines that may contribute to sustainable ASEAN
integration in meeting the COVID-19 challenge.

Every country should be implementing a comprehensive set of measures, calibrated to

their capacity and context, to slow down transmission and reduce mortality associated with
COVID-19, ultimately with the aim of reaching and/or maintaining a steady state of low-level or no
transmission. Appropriate strategies at the national level and subnational level must balance
measures that address the direct mortality attributable to COVID-19, the indirect mortality caused
by the overwhelming of health systems and the interruption of other essential health and social
services, and the acute and long-term detrimental effects on health and wellbeing of the
socioeconomic consequences of certain response measures. Maintaining a steady state of low-
level or no transmission is important because, as the pandemic has spread, its public health and
socioeconomic impacts have been profound, and have disproportionately affected the vulnerable.
Many populations have already experienced a lack of access to routine, essential health services.

Migrants, refugees, displaced populations, and residents of high-density and informal

settlements, are at a particularly high risk from the interruption of already limited health and social
services. The closure of schools increases the risk of some students being neglected, abused or

exploited, and risks the interruption of basic services such as school meals. Every action taken
now to slow the transmission of COVID-19 is an action that brings forward the day that these
services can return. The risk of re-introduction and resurgence of the disease will continue and will
need to be sustainably controlled through the rigorous application of public health interventions as
the virus circulates between and within countries. Ultimately, the development and delivery of a
safe and effective vaccine or vaccines and therapeutics may enable a transition away from some
of the measures necessary to maintain this state of low-level or no transmission. To prevail
against COVID-19, we need an approach that unites in common cause every individual and
community, every business and non-profit, every department of every government, every non-
governmental organization, every international organization, and every regional and global
governance body, to harness their collective capacity into collective action. Everyone has a crucial
role to play in stopping COVID-19.

In order to cope up the pandemic Both the national government and local governments
have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines with various declarations of
emergency, closure of schools and public meeting places, lockdowns, and other restrictions
intended to slow the progression of the virus. Furthermore, President Duterte has signed
administrative orders providing daily hazard pay and additional special risk allowance to front line
government officials and employees including health workers. The office of Vice President Leni
Robredo on its part raised funding for personal protective equipment. The department of health
(DOH) and inter-Agency Task force on Emerging Diseases (IATF) provide Sufficient health system
and public health capacities are in place to enable the major shift from detecting and treating
mainly serious cases to detecting and isolating all cases, irrespective of severity and origin,
Detection: suspect cases should be detected quickly after symptom onset through active case
finding, self-reporting, entry screening, and other approaches, Testing: all suspected cases should
have test results within 24 hours of identification and sampling, and there would be sufficient
capacity to verify the virus-free status of patients who have recovered, Isolation: all confirmed
cases could be effectively isolated (in hospitals and/or designated housing for mild and moderate
cases, or at home with sufficient support if designated housing is not available) immediately and
until they are no longer infectious; Quarantine: all close contacts could be traced, quarantined and
monitored for 14 days, whether in specialized accommodation or self-quarantine. Monitoring and
support can be done through a combination of visits by community volunteers, phone calls, or
messaging.
With the world facing an unprecedented threat, there is an opportunity to emerge with
stronger health systems, and improved global collaboration to face the next health threat. As we
focus on the immediate response to the COVID-19 crisis, it is important to keep in mind the
breadth and depth of consequences already being felt across the globe. We must learn the
lessons of this pandemic now and, in so doing, ensure that our response, wherever possible,
leaves a lasting positive legacy, and makes the world of the future a safer place.

After reading the article about globalization and media, I learned that media has impact
on globalization. Without media, globalization can’t work into global economy. Media may be
conceptualized Economic Aspects in economics, globalization engages in various
aspects of cross border transactions, free international capital flows, foreign direct
investment, portfolio investment, and rapid and widespread diffusion of technology. As a starting
point, the following paradox can be observed regarding the relationship between the
development of the news media and the public sphere: Due to the growth in transnational
and global news media, public opinion formation occasionally transcends national borders
and acquires a political momentum of its own at a global level. The process of globalization
can’t replace because the mass correspondence had impact both culture and society. While
the global media system disseminates capitalist consumer culture globally and uniformly
having a homogenizing effect, it simultaneously has the effect of creating new hybrid
cultures as a result of global flows of people and the interpretation of media flows.

out if you agree or disagree with the following points. Elaborate your answer.
1.The media have become the chief transmitters of culture.

AGREE- for instance, conventional media fills in as an approach to advice tangible social data
(exhibition halls, craftsmanship displays and libraries). Media serves a medium in exchanging
information and passing on correspondence, subsequently this exchange of information likewise
incorporates culture. With the introduction of new media new, better and more advantageous
method of passing on social correspondence. Media and associated technology used to
transmit the strange phenomenon that is ‘culture’ also influence what is preserved and for how

2. Youth are the subject of a massive cultural assault from the unending flow of American
television, magazines, books, films and music which bombard them daily.

AGREE- In this case, we the youth are the victim of massive cultural assault brought by the
avenues of media. Young people are exceptionally inclined from new media's impact, driven by
interest they tend quest for something.

phenomenon, but a political, cultural, military, and environmental one as well.

information such as cultural content. Without internet there is no transmission happens because
in today’s world internet or data is the new oil.

5. There is no globalization without media.

AGREE- Notwithstanding, as I would see it I without a doubt concurred, without media there is
just eye to eye correspondence, not everything individuals can go the world over to talk spread
data and exchange. Information that media share, and spread are useless without
globalization. Without media, maybe some places that depending on globalization are illiterate
on some things. Media came from various kinds, for example, print, customary and new media

Step 1: Read the article, “Religion and Globalization: New Possibilities, Further
Challenges” written by DANIEL GOLEBIEWSKI last July 16, 2014 using this link:

Step 2: Watch the video clip titled, “The Impact of Globalisation on Religion” by: Tony
Blair in this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hIc3KYs5_k

Step 3: List down at least five major reasons or points how globalization affects religion
and vice versa.

 By diminishing the barriers between different cultures, globalization lands religion in a

quagmire of conflicts which reinforce social identities as some do not accept the new
realities and turn to religion to rediscover their own identity.
 Religious beliefs and practices have influenced the social aspects of life among global
communities
 Religion takes advantage of communication and transportation technology; it is at the
same time the source of globalization’s greatest resistance by acting as a haven for
those standing in opposition to its power. On the other hand, because globalization
allows for daily contact, religion enters a circle of conflict in which religions become
“more self-conscious of themselves as being world religions.
 Globalization–due to the advent of communication and transportation technology and the
roles played by the media–has contributed to the deterritorialization and the blurring of
geographical spaces and boundaries
 Religion has long been a driving force in the process of globalization
 An increased understanding and respect for other cultures

Step 4: Write a 3-paragraph reflection paper on how globalization affected your religious
beliefs and practices.

Globalization transforms the generic 'religion' into a world-system of competing and

conflicting religions. This process of institutional specialization has transformed local, diverse
and fragmented cultural practices into recognizable systems of religion. My religion is roman
catholic and I already practice to follow on what the bible has because this is my own belief as a
Christian and through globalization arise it has change and impact to my beliefs and practices
because of existing a lot of beliefs in terms of their own religion. one of this is understanding the
different beliefs on what Christianity has because my understanding in my religion is not too
wide and these brought me to understand the whole thoughts. And some instances it brings me
to have the idea on what totally does true religion to beliefs. Globalization has spread religions,
like Christianity, to places that it wasn’t before while simultaneously creating uniformity in how
The contemporary world 24
those religions are practiced by different geographically-distinct groups. There is a benefit, in
that peoples around the world can further unify around a shared religion with common practices;
however, as with globalization in general- there are drawbacks.

Thus, Globalization - being the increase of interconnections globally - has resulted in the
spread of cultures, ideas and religions for the past few centuries. As we have connected with
peoples around the world previously inaccessible to us, religion has been spread along with the
other goods and knowledge. Through the increasing of interconnections globally, we believe in
different perspective because of influence of others that might increasing our understanding on
what beliefs we had and what others either. In my experience, I have some friends that has
different belief and they didn’t believe on my religion usually because they respect their own
culture and also showing respecting to other religion or beliefs they share and understand and
listen on it not to against though they exactly. Globalization teach us how to understand different
culture and tradition enable to have the unity and respect by its own characteristics. In addition,
be that as it may there’s change happen in an instant but also, we admire the lesson that we
come up in the different perspective on what we discover and developed in our culture and
beliefs.

My Religions may fade away as my practitioners that are converted to newly introduced
religions. Similar to the languages and cultures of some indigenous peoples; as the world
becomes more connected in a shared dominant culture - those regional, more isolated and
diverse cultures are overtaken and assimilated and it cause of sharing different perspective and
also respecting of others belief because of globally many religions and culture are existing and
believing on their own faith. Therefore, understanding different culture and shaping ourselves by
our own beliefs are bringing us to be a good citizen to aware and has an action on what happen
around us. Even though believing in different religion or beliefs we always remember to respect
and to understand their side. Changing at this moment realizing is a must because my religion
gave more understanding to myself and tech me how to be a good man to my constituents
though I have a friend that are not believing to God but rather he believe on his religion, I
respect his belief and sharing our different beliefs are increasing ourselves interesting to explore
about religion to discover about what religion must has the truly not blaming themselves but
rather to accept.

I believe in one reason that really affect my belief and practices, that is I believe in one
God who are guiding me and that’s Jesus that when I read bible it’s astonish me that should
how I am being a man and always do a good thing that could help you be.

left Iraq and after eight, long, grueling years, the war has finally come to an end. due to this,
Iraqi leader, Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki flew to Washington to mark the occasion. The Prime
Minister and President Obama presented it as a victory and also as a good accomplishment
for the previous. it absolutely was during this trip when things become complicated. While Maliki
was in Washington, he received a telephone call from Baghdad that accused his vice chairman,
Tare q al Hashemi a couple of terrorist plot that his bodyguards planned an attack on Shia
targets. this can be where it all started. Maliki got a response from President Obama that it
absolutely was an indoor Iraqi affair and to it he interpreted that u. s. weren't visiting stand on
his way about he will do to Sunnis. He immediately ordered to arrest Hashemi that took plenty of
individuals without warning. Hashemi’s guard

This group has been sending signals and threats to different parts of Asia and even within the u.
s. because the primary dealer and supporter of fireside arms in Iraq. This emergence of
terrorism, although it's normal in Middle East has been out of hand since the occurrence of Isis
as geographical area particularly, there are serious cultural and economic impacts as they
need ransacked thousands of ancient heritage sites in Iraq and Syria in 2013. Some reports
suggest that the sale of stolen artifacts on the black market is also ISIS' second largest source
of revenue, after oil. variety of those ancient artifacts have turned up in London antique shops.
The contemporary world 27
The influence and therefore the capability of Isis to destroy and harm civilian people has been
known for a fact even through these years. This threatens not just the integrity of Iraq itself but
could also cause the redrawing of borders across the broader region. This group has been
wandering, fighting and killing that aims to market reactionary politics and
spiritual fundamentalism. Fighters are destroying holy sites and valuable antiquities whilst their
leaders propagate a return to the first days of Islam. They even hold slaves and ladies and kill
them eventually, which instills the fear to each citizen once the group name is being heard.

The value of the program is intelligent, primer and compellingly elucidating the divide within
the Shiite-Sunni and describing the story of primarily Iraq and Syria since departure of
yank military. The account on which martin smith and his producer shaped the content of the
documentary doesn't leave room for legal opinion. The interviews are conducted by imagery
that had a numbing and mesmerizing effect counting on viewer’s disposition. They include
bombings, battle footage, protest on steady montage and variety of disturbing militant videos
consisting of serial executions (western captives beheading weren't shown) Throughout smith
depicts the brutality and grim conviction during which ISIS militants and figureheads have
perpetuated their conquest. He misses a chance to depict jihad as a zealous Islamic branch for
instance, every now and then indicating young men sing and gunning down prisoners or
chanting Allah as they go away on bombing mission. Smith didn't go far and depict ISIS as jihad
rooted on Islam branch. He fails to categorize religious overtones to the barbarity and bloodlust.

Honestly, their influence has been felt here within the Philippines because the terrorist attacks
are often linked to Isis although it's not. Their impact has been resulting to a widespread
fear that's felt within the whole land of Asia.

LESOON 11

ACTIVITY 11.1 What makes a city “global’? Explain your answers

We can say that city makes global if a city that has wealthy multinational companies,
good infrastructure, better economy, well-educated and diverse populations and powerful
organizations as well as a good political structure that are linked to the other parts of the world
like nowhere else is considered to be global (Badcock, 2002: p31), it means that there is
advantages and it serves as a hub within a globalized economic system. This shows that a
global city has a major influence in other cities as well not just its domain city like when the New
York stock exchange delayed, London, which is a global city as well, its stock exchange was
evacuated. However, for a city to achieve the title of being global, it must have values and ideas
that will have an impact of the rest of the world that had more interconnectedness with other
cities and across a transnational field of action than with the national economy.

Global cities are culturally striking due to their cultural atmosphere and diversity; such
characteristics make them attractive to immigrants and tourists alike. In presenting London's
"new geometry of power" - a response to globalisation - Sun describes the city "heterogeneous
The contemporary world 28
political space where different groups and communities live with opportunity" (2001: 109-110).
New York and London are reasonably open to immigration in comparison to Tokyo, which
challenges Sun's socio-cultural global city approach by imposing strict immigration policy.
Michael Smith objects to Sassen's global city label for Tokyo, stating it "has low levels of direct
foreign investment, few foreign migrants, and lacks both global financial command and control
functions and a cosmopolitan culture" (1998: 484). A global city must be more than
economically active in the international market.

John Eade discusses London's global city credentials, examining the benefits gained
from "its position as the political and administrative centre of the nation"(Eade, 2000: 2) As well
as this, London's cultural appeal is cited by Eade as fundamental for its global city status,
attracting migration and tourism who contribute to London's diversity and productivity. The
London docks are a perfect representation of London's transformation into a global city. In the
1980s, "politicians... talked optimistically of. a centre for the financial and service industries upon
which London would flourish" (Eade, 2000: 35). There is no doubt London is economically
functional enough to be considered a global city, but it is also a retired imperial capital; a true
world city. Whether or not it is fitting to make a distinction between global cities and world cities
is a common topic of contention between academics. Sassen has been known to stress the
differences between the terms; according to her, some of today's global cities - namely
economic powerhouses like Hong Kong - cannot be described as world cities. Sassen states
that 'world city' refers "to a type of city which we have seen over the centuries, (such as) in
earlier periods in Asia and in European colonial centres" (Sassen, 2005: 28). She also makes
note of the fact that a city is able to correspond with both her world city and global city models,
London being an illustration of this. Many other academics do not distinguish between the two;
global city theory is the same as the "world city paradigm" (Hill & Kim, 2000: 2167) or
Friedmann's "world cities hypothesis" (1986). Some studies include a cities' cultural diversity
and richness in order to list cities as more or less global.

New York City is considered to be a global city because it has powerful organizations
that are linked to the other parts and many of the major corporations and multinational
companies are headquartered in this city. Manhattan, which is one of the districts of New York
City, it is the economic heart of the city that contains many headquarters such as the United
Nations which has a major influence in the world as well as the stock exchange on the Wall
Street. And since the city of Rome and Paris contain world heritage sites, it has a significance
being a global city historically and culturally. Furthermore, New York City made it as a global city
because it is considered as a location for one of the major centers of finance and commerce
(Lipsitz, 2010). Global cities are also said to share many of the same characteristics because of
their connectedness and shared experiences of globalization. “Global city is a term that raises
an understanding for the cognoscenti” (Low, 2005: p218).

Therefore, Global cities has the greatest number of business infrastructures housing
international organizations, and businesses alike and it is a powerful organization capable of
providing international humanitarian aids to countries in need. Global cities are dynamic, diverse
and dominant. Due to contemporary globalization, urbanization has become a defining trend of
global development; cities are now not only centers of administration, they are populous beyond
The contemporary world 29
belief. High concentrations of people lead to increased human productivity, which in turn
increases economic output. For a city to be labelled as global, it must boast a number of
important characteristics and depending on who you ask, these characteristics tend to differ. All
cities possess economic, cultural and administrative characteristics that are the result of global
decentralization, yet are able to strategically centralize economic activity and production of
ideas.

ACTIVITY 11.2

Tara Na Byahe Tayo!

You will be assigned a global city to discuss and research on. You shall present an
imagined group educational tour in the global city showing pictures of the places you
visited in the fictional tour. Your output should include answers to the following guide
questions:

1. How would you describe your city?

We love visiting Adelaide for its world-class vineyards and natural wines, but it turns out the
southern coastal city is a great place to take up permanent residence. The Economist
Intelligence Unit gave it a score of 100 (the highest possible score) in both education and
healthcare—judging availability and quality of both—and the city fared very well in the other
categories as well. We're sure the city's pristine beaches, world-class restaurants, and
aforementioned wine scene certainly add to the liveability factor.

2. What is your city best known for?

3. What makes your city a global city?

4. What are the challenges these cities are facing?

LESSON 12

ACTIVITY 12.1

Choose one among the political cartoons given and explain its connotation.

a. b.

c.

d.

I choose A because Population growth is one of the driving forces behind all the
environmental problems, as a growing population needs a considerable amount of non-
renewable resources for its existence. If there are more births over deaths, then there is
population growth, while more deaths over childbirth lead to a decrease in population growth.
One of the highlighting features of the rapid population growth is the exponential growth that has
occurred over the last century. When the growth pattern of a nation is by a fixed quantity, it
shows a linear growth, and population growth is a linear process. Exponential growth occurs by
a fixed percentage, and it is due to this exponential growth factor, population over the past
century has experienced a tremendous increase rate.

With the onset of the Industrial revolution, the improvement in the field of food supply
and health care has to the rapid growth of the human population. The rate of population growth
has slowed down in industrialized countries but continues at an exponential rate in the
developing and more impoverished countries. There are huge problems that are the root cause
of India’s population growth. Factors such as mortality and fertility rates, child marriage, boy’s
importance, ignorance about family planning, rational decisions, polygamy marriage, and the
age and sex factors of the present population influence population growth. With time, humans
have made notable and significant advancements in the field of technology, science, and
medicine. With the invention of treatments, vaccines, and the eradication of various diseases,
people today have a higher life expectancy than their forefathers. These inventions have also
led to a decrease in mortality rates, boosted fertility rates, and have solved reproductive and
infertility problems. Hence the massive improvements in birth rates and slowing mortality rates
have been the main reason behind overpopulation problems.
The contemporary world 31
Education is a vital tool to spread awareness among people. Often, the lack of
Education, illiteracy, and awareness among people causes overpopulation. The exponential
growth in population has caused severe effects on our planet. The most common and current
impact of population growth is the limited quantity of natural resources, mainly fossil fuels. Due
to the population explosion, resources are decreasing, becoming rarer, and will run out entirely.

The overgrowth in population has led to massive effects such as industrialization,

pollution, and unemployment. These components have adversely affected our environment
leading to various health problems in society. Deforestation of spaces has destroyed the natural
habitats of species and has disturbed ecological balance. And with the rapid increase in
population, pooper nations suffer famines and various other natural disasters due to a shortage
of food and other resources. Another adverse effect is global warming and climate change,
which are the significant consequences of the increasing population.

To control population growth, people around the world need awareness on family
planning values, the ill-effects of global overpopulation, and the sustainable growth values.
Awareness programs and rewards might boost the knowledge of population growth.

ACTIVITY 12.2

Population Roller Coaster

Direction:

Explain your own take on the premise “As the population increases, the value of life
decreases.” You should write down your arguments whether you take pro or con
perspective.

PRO.

It should also be stressed that although the future contains many features that are
essentially unknowable, one pertinent feature can be seen in sharp outline and is almost certain
to distinguish the future from the past: populations will be substantially larger in developing
countries than ever before. According to the United Nation's medium variant projections of
1982, the population of the developing world will reach 6.8 billion by 2025-an 89 percent
increase over the 1985 level. This is ensured (barring catastrophe) because of the young age
structure of these populations. The population in the middle and older age groups is certain to
grow even if fertility declines are rapid enough to offset the growing number of reproductive-
aged persons and keep the child population from growing. Even though population growth rates
are declining in many developing countries, they seem almost certain to remain high relative to
growth rates in the developed countries during comparable periods of their economic history.

If our population continue to arise, we will not only ruin and consume all our resources
but also we will be subjected to more and more inqualities. Be that as it may it is not the right
because we descriminate people in terms of their capabalities and status, and we’re relying that
The contemporary world 32
they can’t contribute in our society and live with has united in one community. And though we
can’t denied the fact that if the population increases also the value of their life of people should
increases the than decreases because they find would find ways to sustain inoder to overcome
their situation and might know that if people decreases is we replacing their rights as a human.
But we always remember that descrimination happens all the time. It is the reality. And as the
number population rises, the more descrimination happens because the mere fact that there is a
large population, there will be more chances of inequality. And when one is subjected to
descrimination, oftentimes, the people itself does not know and loses his hope to his real worth
and value. Thought we can say to set aside the discrimination through acceptance and being
fair each od us because if we had the unity in our community even though population is under
increasing we can manage it and do some step to achieve wide success and thus, we see the
other side iwhen it comes of inequatlity that we can’t solve the problem because people itself
beleiveing that government lead under currupt not to help instead and lack of sight on their own
perspective themselves.and we can say that because of being our greeed in one thing. As a
population rises, the harder it gets to solve the problem. It will be easy, living is easy if there is
less population. Having the right does not mean that there isn’t a need to control the growth of
population . on the other hand you must not blame everything to the government. In the first
place the government will be able to manage well its community if there is a low number of
population

The scarcity of exhaustible resources is at most a minor constraint on economic growth

in the near to intermediate term. As any particular resource becomes physically scarce, its
concomitant price rise stimulates conservation, improvements in extraction technology, and the
search for less expensive substitutes. These adaptations serve to greatly mute, and perhaps
entirely counteract, any negative effect of resource depletion on the standard of living. That’s
why if the population increases the value of life decreases because of the shortage resources
as part of developing country

ACTIVITY 13.1

Given 2 choices, one is to pursue your career abroad some time in the future, and the
other is to work in your own country. What will you choose and what are your reasons?

https://accountmaster.com/blog/filipin/
I want to choose to pusue my careeer abroad some time in the future because it has
mainly for money. Wherever we went, we can quickly adapted to the ways of the land and
gelled in. They made for an easily manageable workforce who were willing to work hard for
much lesser than the people of the country itself. And the money that we get paid is way better
than what they our being paid back home and even though it was lesser than what was being
paid to the locals, Indians more than willingly accepted it. I want to used this money to build my
dreams back home. Even now, foreign exchange makes up for a huge part of philippine national
income. Let’s face it. People living abroad do enjoy a better quality of life than those back home.
Be it in terms of healthcare facilities, education, general living conditions like house, car, etc.,
food or anything else you could think of… everything is of a much higher quality as compared to
what it is back home. I’m just being truthful here. When we have sufficient money to play around
with, people are less hesitant to buy a ticket and go out there to see the world. This has mainly
to do with a radical shift in mentalities of people who live in philippines from people who live
abroad. Life in philippine was all about saving up for tomorrow. Saving up for the children.
Saving up for a secure retirement period. It is only recently that people in philippines have
started to go to foreign countries just for pleasure. Back in the days, it was usually for business
or higher studies.

Therefore we can help our own country to growth throught the exchange of money and
after we work abroad, make a business in our town that should gave the opportunity to our
constituent to have the job on my business and help them to build their skills that someday they
can also pursue their career in other country and back home and help our country to developed.
