Q1. ( a ) A 3-ph, 6-pole, star connected, induction motor rated for 50Hz, 400V, has the
following parameters: full load line current = 30A, and impedances referred to
stator are Ri = 200 Ω, Xm= 40 Ω, ( R1+R2’ ) = 0.4 Ω, ( X1+X2’ ) = 0.65 Ω,
all are per phase equivalent circuit parameters. The friction and windage losses
are negligible. Find the
i) No load power loss and power factor
ii) Power loss, power factor, voltage to be applied, if blocked rotor test is
conducted at rated current,.
iii) Full load torque for a slip of 2.5 %.
iv) Starting torque, if applied voltage during starting is 25% of rated voltage
(here neglect stator impedance). Assume R1=R2’ and X1=X2’.

( b ) For the two value capacitor, single phase induction motor, draw its schematic
circuit diagram, the phasor diagrams during starting and running and the speed
torque characteristics showing the combined characteristics and those of main
and auxiliary windings.

Q2. ( a ) A 220 V dc shunt motor has field resistance of 220 Ω and an armature
resistance of 0.5 Ω. On no load, the machine operates with full field flux at a
speed of 1000 rpm with an armature current of 4 A. Neglecting armature
reaction, calculate
i ) The armature current and speed of motor, if it drives a load torque of 100 N-m
ii ) Value of external resistance in field circuit, if it delivers 10 HP at 1200 rpm.

Q3. ( a ) A 3-phase, 2 pole, 3000 rpm alternator has double layer star connected
stator winding. Each of its coils has two turns. It has 9 slots per pole per phase.
The alternator generates 3.3 kV between the lines at its rated speed. The stator
winding is short pitched by 2 slots in order to reduce the harmonics in its emf
wave. Assuming sinusoidal flux distribution, calculate the following :
i) Distribution factor ii) pitch factor and iii) useful flux per pole

Q4. ( a ) A 120 kVA, 2400/240V, step down transformer has the following parameters:
R1= 0.75 Ω, X1= 0.8 Ω, R2 = 0.01 Ω, X2 = 0.02 Ω. The transformer is designed
to operate at maximum efficiency at 70% of its rated load with 0.8 pf lagging.
Determine
i ) kVA rating of the transformer at maximum efficiency
ii ) Maximum efficiency
iii ) Efficiency at half the full load and 0.8 pf lagging
iv ) The equivalent core loss resistance.

( b ) i) The eddy current loss in a certain electrical apparatus operating at its rated
voltage and frequency of 240V and 25 Hz is 642 W. Determine the eddy
current loss if the apparatus is connected to a 60Hz source whose voltage is
such as to cause the flux density to be 62% of its rated value.
ii) The hysteresis loss in a certain electrical apparatus at its rated voltage of 240 V
and rated frequency of 25 Hz is 846 W. Determine its hysteresis loss when
connected to 60 Hz source, so as to cause flux density in its core to 62 % of
its rated value. Assume Steinmetz constant = 1.4.

Q1. a) The magnetization curve of a 7460 W, 220 V series motor is given on separate
sheet in Fig.1 at 1200 rpm. Its armature and field winding resistances are 0.75 ohm and
0.25 ohm respectively. Rotational losses are 1.04 kW. What is the armature current when
the motor delivers its rated load at 1200 rpm?
What is the efficiency of motor at full load? What is the number of turns per pole? Find
its new speed and driving torque, when the load is gradually reduced to 16.67 A.

b) A 50 Hz supply feeds the coil having R= 5ohm and L= 0.02 H which is in series
with resistance and capacitance of unknown values. Voltage across coil is Vb and that
across Rc and C combination is Va. For Vb = 2Va and they are in quadrature, find the Rc
& C values, current through them and pf of the circuit.

Q2. a) A 400 V, 10 kVA, 3 phase alternator with star connected stator winding has an
effective armature resistance per phase of 1.0 ohms. The alternator generates an open
circuit voltage per phase of 90 V with field current of 1.0 A. During the short circuit test,
with 1.0 A of field current, the short circuit current flowing in the armature is 15 A.
Calculate (i) the synchronous impedance, (ii) synchronous reactance, (iii) if the alternator
supplying a load current of 15 A at 0.8 p.f. lagging, to what value would the terminal
voltage rise if the load is thrown off, (iv) Calculate the regulation at 0.8 p.f. lagging.

b) The self inductances of two coupled coils are 30 mH & 15 mH respectively.
Mutual inductance between the coils is 10 mH. If the current in the two coils are 1.0 A
and 2.5 A respectively, calculate i) two possible values of energy stored in magnetic field
and comment , ii) the coupling coefficient.

Q3. a) A 3-ph, 6 pole, 50Hz, star connected induction motor is connected to 400V supply.
The rotor resistance and rotor leakage reactance per phase are 0.2Ω and 0.81Ω, respe-
ctively. The ratio of stator to rotor effective turns is 2. For a full load slip of 0.04,
calculate (a) the full load torque (b) the full load output power (c) the maximum
torque and (d) the speed at maximum torque. Neglect stator impedance.

b) Why self starting is missing in single phase induction motors ? Define clearly the
forward and backward slip. What are the two method of phase splitting used to make it
self starting ? Draw the schematic arrangement, phasor diagram and torque – slip
characteristics of type using auxiliary winding only along with main winding.

as referred to primary side Re1= 3 ohm, Xe1=4ohm, rc1=2.5k ohm, xm1= 2k ohm. The
transformer is operating at full load with a power factor of 0.707 lagging. Determine the
efficiency and the voltage regulation of the transformer.

b) The hysteresis loss in a given magnetic material used in transformer is 16.8 J/cubic
meter/cycle. Density of magnetic material is 9 gm/cubic centimeter and weight of sample
is 3 Kg. Find the loss of energy per hour when supply frequency is 60 Hz. Is this loss is
load dependent? How this loss is minimized at the design stage it- self ?
