Introduction To Computer Networks

1) A network connects devices like computers and printers through communication links. 2) There are two main types of networks: client/server networks with a central server and peer-to-peer networks without servers where all devices have equal capabilities. 3) The Internet is a massive network that connects millions of computers globally, allowing any connected device to communicate with another.

NETWORK
A network is a set of devices (often referred to as nodes) connected by
communication links. A node can be a computer, printer, or any other
device capable of sending and/or receiving data generated by other
nodes on the network

Network Architecture
Client/Server Peer-to-Peer
◦ A server is a computer that provides o Peer-to-peer is a simple network
services to clients and controls that typically connects fewer than
access to hardware, software and 10 computers
other resources o All computers in the network have
◦ A client is a computer that request equal capabilities to use the
services from a server computer resources (hardware, software, data
and file) available on the network
o With peer-to-peer networks, there
is no central server

a networking infrastructure.
It connects millions of computers
together globally, forming a
network in which any computer can
communicate with any other
computer as long as they are both
connected to the Internet
The purpose of the internet is to
connect end systems called host

Network topologies
The term topology refers to the way a network is laid out.
The arrangement or mapping of the elements of a network.

Some of the topologies:

o Bus Topology
o Ring Topology
o Star Topology

Network Devices
Some of the network devices:
oHub:
o Small box that connects individual devices on a network so that they can
communicate
o Gathers signals from devices
o Boasts the signals and sends it to devices
oSwitch:
o connects individual devices on a network so that they can communicate
o More intelligent than a hub
o Determines the source and destination of received signal
oRouter:
o Interconnects two or more networks
o Traces the best route for information to travel
