Describe Duties of a Welding Inspector


It is duty of a welding inspector to ensure that all operations concerning welding are in
accordance with written or agreed, practices or specifications.
A welding inspector must ensure that all operations are in complete compliance with
Local, Company and National Safety Legislation.
This includes monitoring and checking a number of operations; before, during and after
welding; as follows :

Before Welding (Pre-welding Checks)

Documentations : Ensure availability of following documents at work location;


a) Work Orders/Permits/PO
b) Application Standard of latest edition amendment.
c) Approved Drawing and Specification of latest revision.
d) Quality Plans – authorized & endorsed with signature & company stamp.
e) Applicable approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
Welders : Ensure that welders to be used are approved by company. Review Welder
Qualification Record to ensure their use within qualification validity and range.

Material : Review Material Test Certificates to ensure that the material in use is as
specified in drawing and specification.
Consumables : Inspect Consumables to be used for Size, Type and Condition.
Equipments : Check Equipments & Instruments to be used are in good operating
condition. Review Calibration / Validation Certificates, to ensure their use within due
dates and duty cycle.
Fit-up
Cutting Operation : Check cutting method and monitor cutting operation.
Joint Preparation : Inspect joint preparation for appearance and dimension.
Distortion Control : Inspect adequacy of Distortion control measures.
Environment Control : Inspect adequacy of environmental control measures.
Cleanliness : Ensure cleanliness of joint preparation.
Preheat : Ensure achievement of preheat, as applicable, where arc is to be struck.
Alignment : Inspect Fit-up for alignment, both linear and angular; using appropriate
inspection aids.

During Welding (In-process Welding Checks)

Cleanliness : Ensure inter-run & interpass cleanliness.


Preheat & Interpass : Monitor that inter-run & interpass, preheat and temperature, is
maintained.
Welding Consumables : Monitor Consumables in use for storage, handling &
condition.
Welding Process : Monitor welding process in use is as specified in WPS.
Welding Technique : Monitor welding technique in use is as specified in WPS.
Welding Variables : Monitor that all welding variables are maintained within WPS
specified range, during welding.

After Welding (Post Welding Checks)

Cleanliness : Ensure cleanliness of weld zone.


Weld Identification : Check availability and adequacy of Weld Identification.
Visual Examination : Perform visual examination of completed weld joint using
appropriate inspection aid.
Other NDE : Offer for other NDE, as applicable.
Evaluate : Review all NDE reports to identify relevant imperfections and evaluate with
acceptance standard.

Repairs : Give repairs for defects. Ensure availability of approved repair procedure and
qualified repair welder, to attend repair. Witness systematic removal of defect and
refilling. Offer for Re-NDT of repair area.
PWHT : Perform PWHT, HT, PMI, etc. as applicable.
Re-inspection : Perform re-inspection starting with Visual Examination.
Reports : Prepare report of acceptable weld meeting specification duly signed for future
reference and record.

In general, duty of a Welding Inspector is to Observe, Compare and Record all


operations concerning welding.
