Introduction
The ultimate success of a properly
designed RPD depends on how
well it fits and adapts to
structures in the mouth.

One of the most important steps

to ensure an accurate fit is the
seating of the framework.

Check the framework on
the master cast
• The framework should fit the
master cast. If it does not, it will
probably not fit intraorally.
• Replace the framework on master
cast as little as possible to prevent
abrasion (in case a remake is
necessary).
• Examine the relationship
between the framework and
the soft tissue areas.
• Check for proper adaptation
and placement of clasps.
• Check the ease of framework
removal.
The framework should be
assessed using the
following criteria:
1. Inspect the rests:
• Rest seats should be fully
seated (adequate support).
• Rests should not be overcontoured causing unnecessary
bulk or overextension, nor
• undercontoured causing weakness and possible fracture.
2. Reciprocal arms
and proximal plates
should be contacting
the cast.
3. Proper gridwork
should have adequate
relief.
4. Butt joints should be adequate for acrylic resin
(slightly undercut).
5. Linguoplates and maxillary palatal major connectors
should be in intimate contact with the cast.
6. Major and minor
connectors should be an
adequate distance from
abutment teeth of proper
proportions (rigidity,
hygiene).
7. Clasps should be of
uniform taper.
Check framework with an instructor prior to making
adjustments.

These adjustments should proceed the patient's

clinical appointment for framework adjustment.

Heatless stones, diamond burs, Brasseler E-Cutter

burs, carborundum disks and coarse stones may
be used to make adjustments to the major and
minor connectors.

Check the framework in
the mouth
If the framework fits the cast but
does not fit in the mouth, it is likely
the cast is not an accurate
reproduction of the mouth.
Causes:
• Distorted impression.
• Improperly poured cast.
• Abraded cast.
• Shifting teeth.
The fitting of the framework
to the mouth should be
done in two phases:

(1) fitting the framework to the

abutment teeth and soft tissue.

(2) adjusting the framework to

the opposing occlusion.
Fit the framework to the abutment teeth

• Seat the framework in place in incremental steps with

minimal force.
• Check for rocking in both anteroposterior and
buccolingual directions.
• Check for close adaptation of:
Ɀ rests,
Ɀ clasps arms &
Ɀ lingual plates.
Fit the framework to the abutment teeth
• Check for physiologic relief on distal extension
frameworks.
• Check retention.
• Check soft tissue contact
or relief.
Clinical Adjustment (Fit)
Binding against one or more of the abutment teeth can cause
inadequate seating of a framework. The area(s) of binding
cannot be located without the use of an indicating medium.

Several media can be used for this purpose:

1. Spray type Powders.
2. Disclosing wax.
3. Silicone impression materials or
indicating medium.
• There are numerous acceptable disclosing media on the market:
1. Occlude (Pascal, Bellevue, Wash.).
2. Accufilm (Parkell, Farmingdale, N.Y.).
3. Disclosing wax (Kerr/Division of Sybron Corp.,Romulus,
Mich.).
4. Pressure-indicating paste (Mizzy Inc., Clifton Forge, Va.).
5. Fit Checker (GC Dental Industrial Corp., Tokyo, Japan).
6. Chloroform and Rouge.
Occlude (Pascal,
Bellevue, Wash.).
• The advantage of this medium is that it is
thin and accurate and is not easily
displaced from the framework.
• The material can get quite thick if over-
sprayed.
• A disadvantage of this technique is that it
provides only two-dimensional
assessment of fit.
Occlude (Pascal,
Bellevue, Wash.).

• A small amount is sprayed in an even

continuous layer over ALL tooth-
contacting portions of the framework.
• Teeth, tissues and the framework must
be dry to prevent the pigment bleeding
and making reading of the indicator
difficult.
Disclosing wax
(Kerr):
• The melted wax is applied in an
even coat over ALL tooth-contacting
portions of the framework.
• Areas of burn-through indicate
possible areas of binding.
• Thickness of the remaining wax
indicates how far the rest of the
framework is from contact with the teeth.
The advantage of this medium is that it provides
three dimensional assessment of fit.
The disadvantage of wax is that it can stick to teeth
or be wiped away easily if the framework is seated
improperly.
Accufilm (Parkell,
Farmingdale, N.Y.).
3. Silicone impression materials or indicating
medium (e.g. Fit Checker™)
Silicone impression materials or indicating
medium (e.g. Fit Checker™):
• These materials can also be used as three-dimensional
indicators.
• A disadvantage of elastic
materials is that they can
tear or pull off the framework.
• Also time is required for
set of the materials.
The most common areas that interfere
with seating are:
1. Under rests.
2. Rigid portions of direct retainers (e.g. Above the survey
line).
3. Interproximal portions of linguoplate major connectors.
4. Interproximal minor connectors.
5. Shoulder areas of embrasure clasps

the first step in adjustment is to ensure complete
seating.
Adjusting the framework to the
opposing occlusion

• Identify natural tooth contacts in the centric

occlusion (CO) or maximum intercuspation positions
(MIP).
• Adjust the framework in the CO/MIP position.
• Adjust the framework during eccentric movements.
• Occlusal adjustment of two frameworks (if present in
both arches).
• The framework can be adjusted with various burs,
coarse Carborundum stones, or both.

• All adjusted areas should be repolished with rubber

points and wheels.

• When relieving and polishing, avoid staying in one

spot for extended periods of time to prevent the generation
of localized areas of high temperature.
