Artur’s happy memory

My name’s Artur. My family and I have a small house with
a garden. I only have one cousin. His name’s Otto. He’s a
really kind person and he likes helping people.

I remember one day when I was five years old. Otto came
round to visit but I wasn’t happy. I wanted to climb the tree
in the garden, but I couldn’t. I tried and tried, but the tree
was too big. So I was really cross.

Otto smiled when he saw me and said, ‘Don’t be upset, I

know how you can get up into the tree! Do you really want
to do it?’

‘Yes, I do!’ I shouted.

‘OK,’ said Otto, ‘I have a good idea! Can you stand on my

shoulders if I hold your legs?’

‘Yes, I can!’ I shouted.

So Otto helped me to get into the tree and sit on a branch.

Then he climbed into the tree with me, and sat on a
branch too.

When my parents saw us both in the tree, they laughed and

took a photo.

Otto said, ‘You will soon grow big and tall like me and you
will climb lots of trees!’

The thorny devil lizard

Thorny devil lizards live in deserts in Australia. They can’t
get water to drink with their mouths. They use their feet and
their skin instead!

There isn’t much water in the desert, but the sand is a little
bit wet in the evening and in the morning. Thorny devil lizards
can stand in the wettest sand and put some of the wet sand
on their backs, too. The water goes through the lizards’ feet
and skin to their mouths and then the lizards can drink.

Some other animals can hold water in their skins, but they
can’t move water through their skin to their mouths. So the
thorny devil lizard is very special!
