I. Concept/Digest With Base Characteristics of Exponential Functions of The Form

1. The document provides a learning activity sheet for a mathematics lesson on exponential functions. 2. It defines exponential functions as f(x)=bx where b>0, b≠1 and x is any real number. 3. The characteristics described are that the domain is all real numbers, the range is all positive real numbers, the y-intercept is 1, and graphs increase if b>1 or decrease if 0<b<1.

I. Concept/Digest
x x
The exponential function f with base b is defined by f (x )=b or y=b where b>0 ,
b ¹1 and x is any real number.
x
*Characteristics of Exponential Functions of the Form f (x )=b
y 1. The Domain of f (x ) : (-¥ ,¥ ) . The Range of f (x ) :
(0 , ¥ )
2. The y-intercept is 1.
b>1
3. If b>1 , goes up to the right, increasing function.
0<b<1 4. If 0<b <1 , goes down to the right, decreasing function.

II. EXAMPLE
x Graph
a. f(x) = 2 x
b. f(x) = (1/2)x

x f(x) x f(x)
-2 ¼ -2 4
-1 ½ -1 2
0 1 0 1
1 2 1 ½
2 4 2 ¼

The graph shows that the properties of graph a and b are the same except graph b is decreasing
since b<1.
a. b.
The domain is the set of all real numbers The domain is the set of all real numbers
The range is the set of all positive real numbers. The range is the set of all positive real
numbers.
The y-intercept is 1. The y-intercept is 1.
The graph is increasing since b>0. The graph is decreasing since b>0 but <1
III. EXERCISES
Without graphing, determine whether each function is increasing or decreasing and find the y-
intercept.
1. y=5x 2. y=(1/5)x 3. y=(3/2)x 4. y=0.9x 5. y=(√2)x 6. y=3x-1 7. y=2x +1
