The Project is to design a flood control system such as Channeling, Flood barrier, Diversion Channel and
floodwalls to mitigate the flood due to over spilling of the Marikina river and to reduce the damage it causes
to Barangay San Isidro.
Rodriguez, Rizal is the northernmost town in the province and comes after San Mateo, Rizal, and Quezon
City coming from Metro Manila. The town is located on the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountain range and
it is the largest town in Rizal province with an area of 312.70 km². It is also the location of the Montalban
Gorge that is associated with the Legend of Bernardo Carpio.
Barangay San Isidro is a low lying area in Rodriguez, Rizal bounded by Marikina River. The Rizal Provincial
Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office identified Barangay San Isidro as one of the most flooded
areas in the municipality along with Barangay Geronimo, Barangay Balite and Barangay San Rafael. The
barangay’s flood-prone areas are those who are near the river. These areas are Eastwood Subdivision,
Eastwind Homes which are flooded instantly for just an hours of continuous rainfall according to the
barangay captain, Hon. Mayet Hernandez.
The location of the project will be at Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal. It is near to the Marikina River.
The picture below will show the exact location of the project and its vicinity.
The main objective of the project is to design a flood control system that applies knowledge of civil
engineering to mitigate the flood at Barangay San Isidro. It consists of a dual framework for the project
design, which is water and structural engineering. The aim of the project is to prevent overflowing or
overspilling of Marikina River along Barangay San Isidro during heavy rain.
The clients are Barangay San Isidro local government officials represented by the barangay captain, Hon.
Mayet Hernandez and an agency that helps mitigate flooding, the Department of Public Works and
Highways Rizal II District Engineering Office. (DPWH II District). The organization intends to provide a
solution to help people residing along Marikina River at Barangay San Isidro.
1.5.2 Limitation
The project must undergo different stages of development until the project is already complete. It was made
in response to the needs of Brgy. San Isidro. The proposed design solution will help the community to be
protected in flood and to prepare the soil not eroded. The start-up to the completion of the design will be in
a systematic phase and approach, as stated below:
Identification of the Problem - Identifying the existing problem that the designers want to resolve to
formulate solutions that will help the people experiencing the current issue.
Conceptualization - The designers conceptualize the design that will help to eliminate the existing
problem with the best judgment considering its effect on society.
Data Gathering - All available data will be gathered and other related topics to enhance the design
of the designers in resolving the problem. Also, it serves as a basis for the factors affecting the
area.
Design Plans for Trade-offs - The designers identify constraints to minimize the occurrence of the
problem at the beginning of the project and finding trade-offs for considering different solutions to
the existing problem.
Analysis Phase - Analyzing most of the possible constraints and trade-offs that will affect the
project to produce the best solution. A set of criteria will be presented.
Evaluation of Results - Results are evaluated and assessed to produce the best solution and
efficient alternative as trade-offs. Hence, the designers will get the most efficient, economical, and
safe solution for the existing problem.
Final Design Output - Final design is based on the evaluation of the possible solution and with
compliance with the agreement of the designers and its clients.
