TAANDAV SOUNDSCAPE

It begins with the sounds of an uthsav, not exaggerated but layered, presented as they sound in the
reality. You don’t get a break for almost one minute so they start creating a bit of discomfort. The drums
sound to the only dominant instrument here, maybe because the lord shiva plays a damarukam.
Whenever Manoj Bajpai's shots appear we feel the sounds like he does, in the slow motion. In case we
don’t correct the pitch and recorded the sound in low bitrates, when they are slowed down in the post
production they get an extra boost on the lower frequencies i.e., Bass. The same is used here. The
sounds are exaggerated in the protagonist's head. They are slow mo and exaggerated. I guess, the white
noise is rotated in circularly to increase the impact in the slow mo shots. In these shots the drums
almost vanish and the exaggerated monsters' sounds are heard. I guess we hear the manipulated sounds
of a lion and elephant’s roars used for the monsters. The elephant's sound (Vinayak) is again heard
when the constable puts a gun on their heads. Along with all these sounds, a high frequency sine wave is
used in circular rotation loop like the white noise. The resultant singular sound is used to as a crescendo
to raise the impact till a breaking point that takes us back to his past and is matched in an L-cut with a
school bell's ring.

Silence. All we hear is a nervous wall clock's ticking sound along with the lady speaking in the principal
office. As the principal lady politely refuses to reduce the yearly school fee, the scene ends with the
school period bells. Ganta!

The robbery scene majorly has these sounds along with the reverberating dialogues: The thief's screams,
police siren, crickets. Amid this ambience he is asked to steal the money. J-cut: Tom & Jerry sounds.

In the wife – chai scene, the daughter is watching Tom & Jerry. The scene is conceived as kinda absurd
humour. The cooker whistle sound is the symbol of her anger. The Tom & Jerry sound suddenly stops on
Tom hitting Jerry with a pan, when the daughter pauses the show witnessing almost the tense situation.
A house fly's sound is used when he realises that he has been disrespected, and the scene ends with the
Tom & Jerry playing.

In the police station scene, we don’t get to see the whole police station. So the illusion is created with a
walkie-talkie sound effect and pigeons' sounds (this is perhaps true of the school and Robbery scene
too.) One of the constables shutting a book on his face is a good way of expressing fury. All the sounds
are realistic in this scene until the money is being safely kept in the locker. Again, uncomfortable white
noise, some other incomprehensible sound effect in loop and then an exaggerated shut sound of the
door.

The same sound continuous in the beginning of the following scene, this time accompanied with high
pass filtered 'Jay dev Jay dev' slogans along with distant voices of a dispute. And then we are back with
the annoying drums sounds reality as they are arguing. The constable listens to them complaining in
their realistic vocals with the exaggerated slow mo sounds in the background. This twisted perception is
broken as he is disturbed by the two arguing guys. And then we hear the drums, more drums and more
drums. Then THE IMPACT. He is close to the breaking point. Their vocals turn cartoonish. The impact
sound repeats itself in regular intervals accompanied with the crescendo of sign wave tone preparing us
for something big to happen. The crackers sound is used to break the whole sound narrative.
As he holds them by their collars, we hear the drums sounds more musically now with regular beats and
then the sound becomes more and more musical until it inspires him to dance. The transformation from
random, annoying exaggerated sound effects to something that gradually turns into total musical is
beautiful. As he gets into totally trance like mode a high pass filter is applied on the music track and then
L-cut with a heavy reverberated version of the sound to the next scene.

In the jeep scene, a remote police siren sound and a walkie talkie transmitter sound is used in the
beginning to remind us of his profession and position once again.

In the final scene we hear no ambient sounds other than the YouTube video’s sound. As it’s coming from
the laptop speakers, the high and low frequencies are cut off. By the end we hear the music in its
original form but this time it gives a sense of euphoria.
