Soil Sampling
Soil Sampling
The experiment was performed by the group on August 28, 2018 at about 2oclock to 5o’clock in the
afternoon and it was conducted on Soil/CMT Laboratory. The material used in this experiments are:
mechanical sieves No. 4, 10, 20, 40, 60, 100 and 200, brush, marker, plastic, tape as well as mortar and
pestle. All the sample soil used on this experiment were dry under sun days prior to the date of
experiment.
On doing sieve analysis, mechanical sieves have to be shake for soil sample to pass through holes where
their sizes can go. This method can help be useful in determining the particle size distribution of sample
soil. Before doing the sieve analysis, the soil first undergone the process of breaking through the use of
mortar and pestle. Then, about 1000 g of soil sample were tested and poured to mechanical sieves.
Portions that stays on each sieve were weighed and recorded. Lastly, they are put on plastic with their
respective sieve number.
CONCLUSION
After the experiment, all sample were separated according to their grain size that varies from 4.75 to
0.075 mm. The mass we get from the pan is 45 while all the soil sample retained with other sieve weighs
952 g which when combined has 997. There is a 1-2 % error due to digital weighing scale accuracy of 5g
that rounds off the result values. The percent finer for sieve 4, 10, 20, 40, 60, 100, 200 are 95.29%,
79.74%, 58.68 33.60 18.56 11.53 10.03 4.51 respectively

SUMMARY
The group conducted this activity on August 21, 2018 at Sitio Duluhan, Barangas Cuta Batangas City. It
started past 8am in the morning and finished at about 4oclock in the afternoon. On this experiment, we
shovel, trowel, plastic cling wrap, soil sample storage (box).
The experiment started on cleaning the portion where soil sample will be coming. An area of 1m by 1m
were plot where the undisturbed sample wlll be taken at. The group started to dig down deep to attain
the desire deep where soil sample is at its undisturbed state. By the used of shovel and trowel, a cube-
shape soil was removed from the formerly 1 by 1 area. After getting the cube-shape soil, the group cover
it with wax the cling wrap, label it with corresponding weights and store on a clean stoage box. For
disturbed sample, an auger/shobel was used to get the sample soil from a depth of 1 feet with three
different place which should be a meter away with each other. After this, all the disturbed sample were
labeled and stored.
CONCLUSIOON
On this experiement, I therefore conlude that soil sample needs to be propery labeled and stored play
vital role on studying geotechnical engineering. By labeling, we can easily identify information needed in
analyzing the soil through its label. Same thing goes with storage, especially for the undisturbed sample,
proper storage should be done properly to avoid the contact of soil to any foreign thing which may
decresase/increase the result of sample soil on which ever it may be affected.
LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 3
HYDROMETER ANALYSIS
The group conducted the Laboratory experiment 3 on September 12, 2018 at Soil/CMT Laboratory. The
group experiment started at 2 o’clock in the after and ends with 5 o’clock in the afternoon. On this
experiment, the group used hydrometer, breaker, graduated cylinder, weighing scale and timer.
The laboratory experiment started by taking a 50g of clayey soil and dissolved into the distilled water.
After that, on a beaker, the group dissolved 40g of the sodium hexametaposphate into the distilled
water and stirred until the water become clear. Then, the dissolved chemical was transferred to the
hydrometer jar along with the dissolved clayey soil and water was added until it reached the 1 liter level
of the hydrometer jar. The jar was shaken to mix the clayey and the chemical well. Lastly, a hydrometer
was drop on the hydrometer jar and all readings were taken based on time interval set by the group.
CONLCLUSION
For the grain size smaller than 0.075 mm diameter or those that passes through No 200 sieve,
hydrometer analysis is the way on assessing or testing these soil with said sizes. After conducting the
experiment, data were gathered, the recorded reading and the corresponding time it measured are
listed as follow_______________________________________ and the last reading the group able to
record is ___ on time ________. It can also be concluded that as the particle of the soil gets even larger,
the variance from spherical increases
