    material object, ideas, or behavior pattern is spread
    from one society to another or borrowed and
    influenced from a foreign source.
    ➢It can be intentional or unintentional and have
    positive and negative consequences.

    Process of Cultural Diffusion
    Three Factors that influence the process:

    ➢ The extent of borrowing causes people to change their way of


    thinking and their behavior.
    ➢ The existence of media structure that less people learn about
    it.
    ➢ The social status of early adopters.
    Methods of Cultural Diffusion
    • DIRECT DIFFUSION – direct contact between two cultures

    • FORCED DIFFUSION – one culture defeats another and


    forced its beliefs and customs on the conquered group

    • INDIRECT DIFFUSION – culture spread through middleman


    or another culture.
    Types of Cultural Diffusion
    • RELOCATION DIFFUSION – an idea/ innovation that migrates into
    new areas, leaving behind its origin or source of the cultural trait
    • HIERARCHICAL DIFFUSION – an idea/ innovation that spreads by
    moving from a larger to smaller places often with little regard to the
    distance between places
    • CONTAGIOUS DIFFUSION – an idea/ innovation that spreads based
    on person-to-person contact within a given population.
    • STIMULUS DIFFUSION – an idea/ innovation that spreads based on
    its attachment to another concept
    Examples of Cultural Diffusion
    IMMIGRANT
    – a person who moves from their country to another. They
    move for many reasons some of which are safety, family,
    opportunity, education, employment and religious freedom.
    Example of Cultural Diffusion
    REFUGEE
    – are forced to leave where they live because their life is
    endangered due to war, conflict, racial or gender discrimination or
    lack of employment opportunities makes it hard to survive.

    CLIMATE REFUGEE
    – people who have to move due to a changing climate destroying
    their ability to live where they do.
    Examples of Periods of Cultural Diffusion
    Exploration
    A period of discovery where European
    monarchs funded explorers' missions to
    India, China, and the “new world”. This
    period led to the spread of various foods,
    diseases, and cultural items throughout
    the world.
    Examples of Periods of Cultural Diffusion

    The Gunpowder Dynasties


    A series of Muslim dynasties in India, the
    Middle East, and Eastern Europe that
    conquered large areas and created
    cultures that combined Muslim identities
    with local beliefs
    Examples of Periods of Cultural Diffusion

    The Renaissance
    A time of “rebirth” and explosion of
    creativity that both drew from classical
    Greek, Roman, and Arabic culture and
    spread throughout Europe.
    Examples of Periods of Cultural Diffusion

    The Reformation
    A time of religious change that led to the
    development of many new sects of
    Christianity and the spread of new
    religious ideas throughout the western
    world
    Cultural Fusion
    - a new creation resulting from multiple different cultural
    elements merging together.

    behaviors/traits of the dominant culture and maintain
    elements of their minority identity to function in the dominant
    culture.
