    Sequoyah

    • He owned a trading post.


    • He wrote down the people who owed
    him using symbols.
    • He realized he needed a better way to
    keep track of who owed him money.
    • He decided to create a Cherokee
    alphabet so that the Cherokee people
    could have a written language.
    Sequoyah

    • It took Sequoyah 12 years to develop the


    Cherokee alphabet.
    • He listened to all the sounds of all the
    words Cherokee people spoke to create
    86 symbols.
    • With these 86 symbols, he was able to
    create a written language.
    Cherokee Language

    It took a while to convince the


    other Cherokee people about this
    language, but Sequoyah was
    determined and patient.
    The Cherokee published their first
    Native American newspaper in
    1828. It was called Cherokee
    Phoenix.
    Sequoyah wanted his people to read
    and write and he was able to make
    that happen.
    Trail of Tears

    • Between 1830 and 1850, the United States


    forced about 100,000 Cherokee people to
    move west.
    • The reason was because the US wanted this
    land for themselves.
    • More than 4,000 people died walking on this
    long journey.
    • It was a very sad time in history. This is the
    reason it was called the Trail of Tears.
