World Famous Parabolic Arches (PARA SA MATH KEMERUT)

1. Arc de Triomphe (Paris, France) – Arc de Triomphe is one of the most


famous monuments in Paris. It stands in the western end of the Champs-
Élysées.
Purpose: Its purpose is to honor those who fought and died for France in
the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all
French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces.
Architect: The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin. It was
constructed in 1806-1836 and is 50 meters (164 ft) in high.

2. The Gateway Arch (St. Louis, United States) – Clad in stainless steel
and built in the form of an arch, it is the tallest man-made monument in the
United States, and the world’s tallest arch. A 630-foot (190 m) monument
in St. Louis, Missouri.
Purpose: The Gateway Arch was erected to commemorate President
Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and to celebrate St. Louis'
central role in the rapid westward expansion that followed.
Architect: The Gateway Arch was designed by Finnish-American architect
Eero Saarinen in 1947. Its construction began on February 12, 1963, and
was completed on October 28, 1965. The monument opened to the public
on June 10, 1967.

3. Maria Pia Bridge (situated over municipalities of Porto and Vila


Nova de Gaia) - The Maria Pia Bridge was the longest single-arch span in
the world at the time of its construction. It is a railway bridge built in 1877.
Purpose: It was built to cross one of the steepest valleys along the Douro
River, the highest-flow river of the Iberian Peninsula.
Architect: The bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the architect with a
famous tower in Paris named after his name. The structure of the bridge
consists of a deck 354.375 m long, supported by two piers on one side of
the river and three on the other, with a central arch with a span of 160 m
and a rise of 42.6 m (140 ft).

4. Airy Forest Pavilion (Guangfu, Hualien, Taiwan) – this arch is


comprised of two rings surrounding circular decking. It is used to host both
the opening and closing ceremonies of the art festival. Taking inspiration
from the rings of a tree and the unpredictable growth patterns in nature, this
lightweight and endlessly renewable outdoor space has a very small impact
on the environment in which it was placed.
Purpose: The project was conceived within the context of an art festival
curated by Huichen Wu of Artfield, Taipei for Taiwan’s Forestry Bureau with
the object of raising awareness of a new growth forest that is being
threatened by the government.
Architect: The architers are the members of local Amis tribe, indigenous
people of Taiwan. The Forest Pavilion is 22 feet tall and has a diameter of
60 feet.

5. The Golden Arches (McDonald’s) – These arches are the symbol of
McDonald’s, the global fast-food restaurant chain. Originally, real arches
were part of the restaurant design. They were incorporated into the chain’s
logo in 1962, which resembled a stylized restaurant, and in the current
Golden Arches logo, introduced 1968, resembling an “M” for “McDonald’s”.
Purpose: Business. The business began in 1940, with a restaurant opened
by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California.
The company began as a barbecue restaurant and in 1948, they
reorganized their business specifically as a hamburger stand selling
burgers for 15 cents. Ray Kroc is the founder of McDonalds, he opened the
first offcial McDonalds in Des Plaines. Illinois on April 15th 1955.
Architect: The red and white tiled building with the golden arches was
created by Architect Stanley Meston in 1953.
