12.5-1 Composition of Two Liquid Phases in Equilibrium. An Original Mixture Weighing 200 KG

The original mixture contained 200 kg total with 50 kg isopropyl ether, 20 kg acetic acid, and 130 kg water. Using a mixer-settler, the phases were separated into a raffinate and extract layer. By plotting the composition on a ternary diagram and drawing an equilibrium tie line, the compositions of the raffinate were found to be 0.118 acetic acid, 0.861 water, and 0.021 isopropyl ether. The compositions of the extract were 0.043 acetic acid, 0.009 water, and 0.948 isopropyl ether. Mass balancing equations were set up and solved, determining the raffinate to be 152 kg and extract to be 48 kg

12.5-1 Composition of two liquid phases in equilibrium.

An original mixture weighing 200 kg

and containing 50 kg of isopropyl ether, 20 kg of acetic acid and 130 kg of water is equilibrated in a
mixer-settler and the phases separated. Determine the amounts and compositions of the raffinate and
extract layers.

F = 200 kg
xAM = 20/200 = 0.1 wt fraction acetic acid
xBM = 130/200 = 0.65 wt fraction water
xCM = 50/250 = 0.25 wt fraction isopropyl ether

Plot point M (by following red lines). Draw the equilibrium tie line through M, to get L 1 and V1.
Reading from the graph, in the raffinate layer (L1):

xA1 = 0.118 and xC1 = 0.021

(so xB1 = 0.861)

In the extract layer (V1):

yA1 = 0.043 and yC1 = 0.948

(so yB1 = 0.009)

Check on x-y plot (next page): L1-V1 is an equilibrium tie line.

Using a total material balance,

𝑀 = 𝐿1 + 𝑉1 𝐿1 = 200 − 𝑉1

Using the component mass balance,

𝑀x𝐴𝑀 = 𝐿1x𝐴1 + 𝑉1y𝐴1

200(0.1) = 𝐿1(0.118) + 𝑉1(0.043)

Solving simultaneously,

V1 = 48 kg and L1 = 152 kg

Using the graphical method, the distance of lines VM

´ and LV
´ must be found to use the lever rule.

In this example,

´ = 69.8 mm and LV
VM ´ = 92.6 mm.
Then,

Therefore,
L1 = 150.8 kg and
V1 = 200-L1 = 49.2 kg
