DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to all of my past teachers whose
guidance and instruction inspired me in astrology, as well as, all
the aspiring students of horary who wish to improve their own
skills and abilities in this finely tuned branch of astrology.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Putting a book together from scratch is quite an ordeal,
as I have just found out! And, like so many things in life, I know
that I could never have completed this task single-handedly.
Consequently, many thanks and great appreciation go out
to so many people for all their help in making this book possible.
I especially wish to extend a ve ry warm 'Thank you' to my software
partner, Bill Weber, for the graphic wheels that you will see in this
book, to Mark Pottenger, for the astro-glyphs that appear on the
chart wheels, to Mary Downing, for her guidance, to Michael
Munkasey, for his wit and perception in creating this incredibly
catchy book title, to Rob Hand for the Forward, to my wife,
Carol, for working right by my side and pushing me to publish
this book and to Mom and Dad Kovacik.
"This (book by Alphee) may be something of a literary
first. And it is rendered by a master of the subject."
Rob Hand

"I've been deeply involved in astrology for many years,

and yet Alphee Lavoie still manages to amaze me with the
accuracy of his work. I'm pleased to see that he's at last written
a book in which he reveals some of the techniques behind his
astonishing skills." Steve Forrest

"Witty, boisterous, warm and caring are but a few

adjectives describing Alphee when you first meet him. When
you hear him speak on Astrology, two adjectives top this list -
- TEACHER AND GENIUS. I know I am presenting one of
the best when he is on the faculty of NORWAC."
Maggie Nalbandian

"The reader of this volume will reap the benefits of 34

years of experience from a horary expert. Alphee shares all of
what he has struggled to learn from his own application. He
presents rules and techniques that he has proven to work in
finding lost articles. This is the kind of book that fosters the
continuation of the highest calibre of education in astrology."
Michael Munkasey

"Alphee Lavoie is what I'd call an astrologer's

astrologer. As a full-time astrologer with over 20 years
experience myself, Alphee is the person whom I call when 1
want a second opinion about my own chart! I can't give him
any higher praise than that. An nobody beats him at finding
lost obj ects!" Joyce Levine

"Alphee Lavoie is the hidden star of Horary Astrology.

With this volume those interested in the subject can gain the
wisdom of his 34 years of accurate work with horary."

FOREWORD

As many people are probably aware by this time, I have

been involved rather heavily in researching and restoring ancient
and traditional Western astrology through ARHAT and Project
Hindsight. One of the things that we have discovered is that horary
astrology and its close relative electional astrology are among the
oldest applications of astrological technique. Some of the earliest
fragments that we have in Greek translations or summaries of
Chaldean and Egyptian horary and electional astrol ogy dating from
possibly as early as the 3rd century B.C. We have no natal
astrology that is any older.
Yet until relatively recently with the traditionalist revival
horary has been regarded as a kind of bastard cousin of natal
astrology, "mere vulgar fortune-telling" that should not be confused
with the "high art" of natal astrology. Ptolemy himself seems to
have rejected horary even while accepting the premises of el ectional
astrology. And much of the negativity directed at later horary
astrology was a direct result
of Ptolemy's attitude. But we now know that horary and natal
astrology evolved side-by-side each developing and exchanging
techniques with the other. The only real distinction was in the
application. Guido Bonatti's massive summary of the astrology
of the Middle Ages, the Liber Astronomiae, introduced
virtually every technique in the context of both horary and
natal astrology, and his section on natal astrology was one of
the longest sections of the book. The largest and by far the
best of the three books of William Lilly's Christian Astrology
is the second book on horary astrology. So given this ancient
lineage, what is the problem with horary astrology?
As I have said above horary has been considered by
some to be mere fortune-telling, but that charge can be equally
laid at the door of predictive astrology. And as with predictive
astrology it rather depends on what is done with horary and
how it is done. I think astrology it rather depends on what is
done with horary and how it is done. I think that this objection
to horary is a smoke-screen for something more fundamental,
but not often stated up front.
Many recent authors have commented on the problem
of horary astrology. Patrick Curry has addressed it in a lecture
given to historians at Cambridge University in England.
Geoffrey Cornelius has also recently addressed it in his
excellent book, The Moment of Astrology (published 1994,
by Arkana). The problem is this. If horary astrology is valid,
then it is very difficult to create an explanation of astrology
that can be remotely compatible with the prevailing worldview
of scientism. I have both in lectures and in print stated that if
astrology in gneral is valid then the mateialist worldview is
not. This statement is even more true in regard to horary
astrology.
How can the chart of a moment when someone asks a
question of an astrologer possibly have any cause and effect
relationship to the outcome of the question. What is being
bom? Horary astrology makes it clear that the universe is
much stranger than most people imagine, the relationship of
cause and effect much different.
But horary astrology is directly in the mainstream of
divination in general. I Ching, tarot cards, geomancy, and
dozens of other techniques do much the same thing as horary.
The only real difference is that horary uses astrological
methods, has much more rigorous rules, its judgments more
detailed and clear, and it is therefore much more demonstrable.
Astrology in general is daily experience that we are somehow
tied to the universe not only by the mechanical forces beloved
of Scientism, but also by symbolic patterns that connect us
through our psyches to our immediate physical surroundings
and circumstances, and to the universe beyond, both outwardly
and inwardly. Horary demonstrates this even more clearly
than other branches of astrology. One may argue about the
accuracy of an astrologer's character analysis. One cannot
argue about a properly done horary chart. The answer is either
correct or it is not. Horary is the most powerful evidence that
astrology has to offer of the intrinsic strangeness of things.
And everyday those of us who use horary see that it gives
valid and clear answers.
I have known Alphee Lavoie for many years. I have
known him to be a master of horary technique. His methods
are somewhat of the modern school, but no horary astrology
is ever totally modem. Its traditional roots are too deep. And
Alphee Lavoie's application of what he knows is among the
best of any practitioner today. His specialty is also among the
most traditional and at the same time most radical of horary
problems, the finding of lost objects. The idea is simple. A
chart of the moment of the asking of a question about a lost
object can, if certain basic conditions are met, describe the
object, the circumstances of its being lost, the likelihood of its
recovery, and if recoverable, where and how. No other branch
of horary requires as thorough an understanding of the
relationship of astrological symbolism to basic physical plane
surroundings. The astrologer has to be able to describe people,
animals, buildings and rooms within buildings, to evaluate
compass directions, different kinds of terrain, and many other
kinds of circumstances. Other texts on horary have dealt with
these techniques, but no other text on horary to my knowledge
has concentrated on this most difficult type of horary question.
This may be something of a first in horary literature. And it is
rendered by a master of the subject.

PREFACE
This book was actually begun in July of 1979 as Saturn
was in opposition to my Saturn. I had to put the book aside
because the demand of my counseling practice was taking up all
my time. Additional demands also took my time in 1982 as 1
began my astrological software company, AIR Software.
In the first developmental stages of this book, as I was
quickly collecting all my horary charts, it was next to impossible
to walk through my bedroom where I stored the charts. In
fact, I had to gingerly tiptoe and carefully climb over wobbly,
ceiling-high piles of hundreds of charts because I had sorted the
horaries into 12 piles throughout the room, each pile corre
sponding to the houses of the chart.
Since 1979 this book has been revised and rewritten
with care and patience numerous times by my wife, Carol, and
finally, we’ve decided revise it once more for publication, 14
years later at my second Saturn return. (Who says astrology
doesn’t work!) You will see that some of the chart examples
are quite old but offer excellent horary examples, using and
illustrating the techniques taught in this book.
Before I get started with techniques let me just say that
1 use the Placidus house system for all my horary charts. I have
tried the Koch system but have not found it to give me accurate
readings. As you know horary astrology has many uses. The
art of finding lost articles is a highly specialized area. As in all
horary work, using rulerships, especially for zodiac signs is vital
to an accurate reading. The Koch system of calculation can
create different house cusps than the Placidus system. To test
which systems works with more accuracy, I drew charts using
both house systems simultaneously and found that the Placidus
system is the most accurate to work with the rules set forth in
this book.
Much of my horary work and techniques are my
own...techniques and methods that I’ve learned from my own
experience in working with horary. My foundation of study is
from the teachings of Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson. What I ’ve tried
to present in this book is my 34 years of horary experience,
offering you the results of my own trial and error process and
the final results of what I have come to see works time and
time again with uncanny accuracy and predictability. I’m
delighted to be able to share these techniques and approaches
THAT I KNOW WORK and will work for you, too, in this, my
second book, on Horary Astrology.

Horary Myths and Misconceptions 1

CHAPTER 1

HORARY MYTHS
AND MISCONCEPTIONS
Having worked with horary since 1965, and looking at
literally thousands of questions and charts, presenting national and
international workshops and lectures on the subject. I’ve come
to find that there are some very strong myths and misinformation
about horary basics - particularly those that caution the astrologer
to “do not read the chart when...” It is these major myths that
I wish to first address before actually instructing you, the reader,
in the simplified and easy-to-use rules of Horary Astrology.
There are four major misconceptions that I would like to
discuss and dispel. These "pet peeves" state:

Myth 1 - * NEVER read the chart when 3 degrees or

less are on the Ascendant, as it is too early to read the chart.
Myth 2 - * NEVER read the chart when 27 degrees
plus is on the Ascendant, as it is too late to read the chart.
Myth 3 - * NEVER read a chart with a Void of Course
Moon.
Myth 4 - * NEVER read a chart with Saturn in the 7th
house because the astrologer can’t help you or will be wrong.

In Part II of this book you will see how to handle each of

these ‘Myths’ in the chart examples.
2 Lose this book... and find it with horary

MYTH1
First, we’ll explore the myth about rejecting a chart that
has 3 degrees or less, or 27 plus on the Ascendant. In all my
years of experience, the charts I’ve seen with these early or late
degrees have proven to be radical and should always be read for
a client.
Let’s say that a client went on a job interview, was hired
on the spot, and calls you for a horary, asking whether or not he
should take the job. You calculate the chart and find that 1 degree
is rising. It would be ridiculous to tell your client to call you at a
later date or refuse to read the chart. The early degree is simply
telling you that it is too early to answer the question with
complete certainty. If you told the client to wait and ask the
question until a later time, and again the chart came up with an
early degree on the Ascendant, would you tell him to wait again?
No, of course not! It’s reasonable to expect a company to want
a quick reply when they offer a prospective employee a job.
Waiting could cause a great loss to your client.
When this situation arises you can easily read the aspects
to the rulers of the first, tenth, sixth and second houses, which are
all job related. They signify the Querent, the boss, the duties of
the job, and the paycheck, respectively. Additionally, you can
successfully read the house cusps. The ruler of the first and planets
therein will tell the Querent’s strengths, insecurities and general
attitude toward the job. The second house and planets within will
show his earning power and whether he can ask for a higher starting
salary. Remember, the second house is also his self-worth so it is
easy to see, by sign, aspects and planets, if he is overrating or
underrating himself.
The sixth house and its planets show the duties and
responsibilities that the Querent will be expected to carry out. If
there are afflictions then the job will be quite stressful. The tenth
house, of course, shows the employer, but also the promotion
and recognition that this job can offer him. If all of these points
look favorable, then you want to advise the client to take the job,
regardless of the early degrees on the Ascendant. Conversely, if
Horary Myths and Misconceptions 3

these aspects are unfavorable, then a decline would be suggested.

Now, this is where the early degrees actually prove helpful
in making a determination about the appropriateness of the job.
Early degrees indicate that it could take too long for the client
to feel confident at the job or that the job will reshape his
personality in some major way. We often see this in charts where
individuals are asking about switching careers.

MYTH 2
Now for the second myth of late degrees on the Ascendant.
If the chart has very late degrees, between 27 and 29 degrees,
on the Ascendant, it could mean that the job won’t last very long
or that the original job description will drastically change from
what the way it was originally intended. However, if all else looks
good in the chart the Querent may find that, in spite of these
changes, this job could be a most positive stepping stone to
something better at a later time.

MYTH 3
The third most common myth of “Don't” is the Void of
Course Moon. Again, years of successful chart reading have
shown me that the Void of Course Moon has little bearing on the
outcome of the matter. It does, however, mean that the
Querent has nothing to worry about because the conclusion
has already manifested itself. 1 often see this occur in charts when
the Querent has already made up his/her mind or when he knows
the answer or the outcome but doesn’t want to accept things the
way they really are. So he phones, hoping t hat I will tell him what
he wants to hear, thus, delaying confronting or accepting the issue
as it really is.
The Void of Course Moon is common in charts when the
client does not really want to act to resolve the question.
For example, a question such as "Should I move to New
York?" might produce a chart with a Moon is Void of Course
when the Querent has no intention of moving! In other words, the
question is really nothing more than the client's idle musing, while
4 Lose this book... and find it with horary

going through the ‘what if syndrome! Usually, if you tell a client

to look back at everything that happened regarding the question,
he can readily find the answer himself. So the lesson is to use all
the other strengths in the chart to the bring awareness that the
client needs.

MYTH 4
The last ‘warning’ that is popular with many astrologers is
to actually avoid reading the chart when Saturn is in the 7th house.
People still believe that when Saturn is present in the 7th house
the astrologer will make a grave and costly error in judgment while
interpreting the chart. Ancient astrologers felt that Saturn in the
7th house indicated a mathematical error in calculation that would
inhibit a correct answer coming from the chart. Remember, Saturn
(in the older school of thinking) was the planet of restriction and
mistakes, and the 7th house ruled the astrologer. Put these two
concepts together and the verdict was that the astrologer would
make a mistake!
I strongly disagree with this line of thinking. Personally,
I’d rather see Saturn in the 7 th house of a horary chart any day
than deceitful, confusing Neptune! If ever an energy can
demonstrate faulty judgment it’s Neptune! If you are a good
astrologer and thoroughly know horary, it shouldn’t make any
difference what planet is in the 7th house.
I hope this discussion dispels some of the old myths and,
together with this book, sheds light on your horary readings.
Testing for the Proper Ascendant 5

CHAPTER 2

TESTING FOR THE

PROPER ASCENDANT
The location of the Sun by house position in the horary
chart will help test the accuracy of a chart and its calculations
(even if it was done by a computer!). The Sun travels through all
12 houses of the chart in a time span of 24 hours. Therefore,
approximately every two hours the Ascendant changes zodiac
signs. A question asked at sunrise will always place the Sun on or
near the Ascendant (just like a natal birth) on the Eastern side of
the chart. Noontime ‘births’ will bring the Sun on or near the
Midheaven (tenth house cusp), while late afternoon timings will
place the Sun close to the Descendant or around the seventh house.
The fourth house cusp or Nadir will host the Sun when the chart is
timed for Midnight.
A rule of thumb is to look for the Sun in an elevated
position in the chart when the question is clocked in the
morning and, conversely, below the horizon when you erect
an evening chart. This is exactly the same for natal birth charts;
so again to roughly repeat the positions, the Sun will be on the first
house cusp at dawn, it will move to the tenth house for Noontime,
to the seventh house area for six P.M. and descend to the fourth
house for midnight.
6 Lose this book... and find it with horary

The following chart will illustrate the Sun’s path through a

chart for various times during the day:

The Sun Will Be In The Time of Day

Twelfth house between 6 am and 8 am

Eleventh house between 8 am and 10 am

Tenth house between 10 am and Noon

Ninth house between Noon and 2 pm

Eighth house between 2 pm and 4 pm

Seventh house between 4 pm and 6 pm

Sixth house between 6 pm and 8 pm

Fifth house between 8 pm and 10 pm

Fourth house between 10 pm-Midnight

Third house between Midnight-2 am

Second house between 2 am and 4 am

First house between 4 am and 6 am

*Note: Mor ning/day time questions will always have an

elevated Sun while evening queries will show the Sun below
the horizon in the chart.

Rechecking the position of the Sun in your horary chart is

always the first order of business to verify that you have the right
chart because without the proper house cusps the horary chart
would be completely invalid.
The Second House Ruler 7

CHAPTER 3

THE SECOND HOUSE RULER

The second house ruler in the horary chart rules all
movable possessions as well as personal net worth in cash value.
It rules ALL lost articles. It is often confused with the fourth
house which has rulership over non-movable possessions, such
as property, land, houses, buildings, etc.
Of course, if the possession is movable it can be stolen,
mislaid or lost, therefore, the second house is usually the chief
house ruling the item. Actually, it is the second house ruler (the
planet ruling t he sign on the cusp of the second house), which will
always point to the direction where the lost article will be
located. In addition, the second house ruler will also indicate the
location where the article presently lays and offer a clear description
of the article itself.
When the second house ruler is in an angular house (houses
1,4,7 and 10), recovery of the article is easy and quick. When
it is found in the suceedent houses (2,5,8 and 11), more time will
have to be spent searching for the item. A Cadent house (3,6,9
and 12), holding the second house ruler, means that the missing
object is really lost and may be found after a long search, unless
it conjuncts the angular houses by a 3 degree orb. Then the missing
item may be returned soon.
After understanding how the five significators describe
and establish the whereabouts of the missing/lost article (see
Chapter 7), the second house ruler takes over. At this point in
8 Lose this book... and find it with horary

the reading of the horary chart, the second house ruler will supply
the vital, additional information leading to the recovery of the item.
For instance, if the planet ruling the second house is alone in
the house then the article, too, is by itself. Similarly, if other
planets are in the same house in the chart, you may also expect
the lost item to be among other things. Be sure to carefully check
the other planets that are in the same house with this ruler to help
identify the other objects that the lost article might be among.
When the ruler of the second house is with four or five
planets in the same house, look for the item in a storage room or
where there are a lot of personal materials. If all of these planets
are in Scorpio the item would most likely be in a ‘junk’ room, a
pile, the garbage, or the dump! The following is a brief listing of
the planets and items that they represent:

Sun: gold, brass, objects of value, rich furnishings

Moon: silver, silverware, kitchen-ware, items of
sentimental value
Mercury: papers, books, paper money
Venus: copper, bronze, jewelry, cosmetics, clothes
Mars: tools, machinery, iron and steel, sharp
instruments
Jupiter: colleges, souvenirs, holy objects
Saturn: lead, zinc, work clothes, leather
Uranus: auto parts, electrical appliances,
electronics
Neptune: glass, photographic equipment, tobacco,
alcohol, medicine
Pluto: junk items with no value, garbage, toiletries

When the second house ruler is about to change signs

(when it’s at 29 degrees or more,) then the article is about to be
moved to another location. If it has just changed signs (when it’s
at 0 degrees or more of a sign), then the missing article has just
been moved to a new location. Check the previous zodiac sign
for descriptions of the previous location, and check the current
The Second House Ruler 9

sign for descriptions of the new location.

The same process is used when the second house cusp is
just about to change signs. If the house ruler is applying at 29
degrees to a house cusp this, too, is a strong indication that the
article is about to be moved. Additionally, if the second house
ruler has just entered a new house, the item has most likely just
been moved. Always check the house for the new location and
description.
My 34 years of experience answering, literally, thousands
of horary charts for clients has shown me that there is a strong
correlation between extremely late or early degrees in a sign and
locating a lost article near a door, window, gate, or in a box, a
package, and that the article is about to be moved. This same
discovery holds true when the ruler of the second house is within
two degrees of any house cusp.
The element that appears on the second house cusp and
the placement of the second house ruler are good general indicators
of location. Air signs signify the highest parts of a room or area.
Fire signs show that the object is about half way up in height,
while Water signs point to areas low in the room or below ground
level, such as a cellar. Earth signs are the element indicating a
search is needed on the ground, ground level, or floor. Further
reference to the chapter on Decanates will aid in establishing the
estimated height. The Table on Directions will show you how
important the second house ruler becomes in pointing towards
the proper compass directions to locate the item.

CHAPTER 4

CLOCKING THE TIME OF THE

QUESTION
There has always been a tremendous controversy among
astrologers as to what clock time and location should be used for
erecting a horary chart, but I feel that it is really quite simple. I
have just a few rules to follow that will make it easy and accurate
for you to take the proper time for a question.
F irst, if the question is for yourself, conduct a very thorough
search for the missing item before even thinking of timing the
question. If the question is for someone else or someone else is
posing the question, be sure that they have done a thorough search
before calling and asking the question. If you have lost an item,
search in every possible nook and cranny where you think the
article might be. If you come up empty handed after this furtive
search then ask and clock that time for erecting the horary.
If the question is asked by someone else, either in person
or over the telephone, take the time when the question is asked
but ONLY WHEN YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THE
QUERENT IS ASKING. Part of the dialogue between you and
the Querent, prior to clocking the question, might include asking if
he has looked in a specific place. Ask him for a detailed description
of what he has lost, where he had it last, where he thinks he lost it,
etc. Ask whatever questions you feel are necessary in order to
best help the client locate the item. When you feel that you are
clear about the question, it is a good idea to repeat the question
Clocking the Time of the Question 11

back to the client. This type of clarification is called reflective

questioning and might go something like this:
“Now you want me to help you locate the watch that you
lost yesterday and you said that the watch was yours? The last
time you remember seeing it was yesterday afternoon in your
bedroom, correct? And it was missing this morning? And you
didn’t leave the house at all? So you still think it’s in the house
because no one else lives with you? Do I have the facts correct?”
The moment that the Querent verifies your questions,
making his question as clear as a bell to you, then look at the
clock and take that time for erecting the judgment chart.
I f the question is posed to you in a letter, read the letter
carefully until the question and its details are clear to you. When
you fully understand the question, check your watch and use that
lime for the horary chart.
If the question comes through a second party ('where is
my brother’s missing ring?’) the most accurate reading will always
be obtained when the owner of t he article himselfposes the question
to you. Therefore, it is always recommended that you ask the
second party to have the owner of the item telephone you. If
that’s impossible or unlikely to happen, then take the time when
the second party asks the question and you fully comprehend it.
Of course, if that is the case, remember you will have to turn the
chart to the correct house cusp before making any determinations.
Read Chapter 5 on Turning the Chart for additional information.
If a client telephones a number of times but has not been
able to reach you on the phone for a couple of days, only clock
the time when you speak with the client and understand the
question. I stress this point because of its great importance in
affecting a reliable, valid answer.
It is important to note that any chart erected for the time
that the question was first asked of you will be a valid chart.
It is the time that the question first asked that carries all of the
energies and answers to that question. Always rely on the horary
chart of the initial query and refer back to it when needed.
Example: Assume there are two friends; one dabbles in
12 Lose this book... and find it with horary

astrology and the other lost a ring. The dabbler sets up a horary
chart for his friend but cannot come to a satisfactory solution to
offer advice to recover the item. The Querent then contacts you,
the professional astrologer, with the same question. It is important
that you find out about this previous query and use that original
chart for your work. This same procedure holds true if another
astrologer were to come to you for assistance to locate a missing
article and had already drawn a chart for himself.
Now, let’s address the controversy of which coordinates
of latitude and longitude to use for clocking the horary. Some
astrologers use the latitude, longitude and time zone of the city in
which the client is located, whether it’s local or across the seas.
Personally, I have ne ver found tha t t o work, s o I use only my own
latitude, longitude and time zone, where I am at the time of the
question. If I am in my office in Connecticut, I use those
coordinates. If I am at a conference or trade show lecturing or
demonstrating my software, I will use the coordinates and time
zone of that city. However, for the charts that were previously
asked or drawn up by another astrologer, use the exact same
chart with the same coordinates and time zone changes, etc.
Turning the Chart 13

CHAPTER 5

TURNING THE CHART

When we actually begin reading a horary chart, the first
thing to do is to determine the correct houses with which to work.
Some questions require that we "turn the chart."
In the horary chart the person asking the question is called
the "Querent." After clocking the question, erecting the chart
and checking for the proper position of the Sun, the Ascendant
and the planet ruling the sign on the Ascendant, become the rulers
of the Querent.
Turning the chart is a process that must be done ONLY
WHEN THE QUERENT IS ASKING A QUESTION FOR
SOMEONE ELSE. This process of turning the chart allows the
astrologer to locate the proper "new Ascendant" which is needed
for an accurate reading. Time spent practicing this process will
pay off as you gain fluency in working with the chart and understand
how to quickly find house relationships.
Generally, the planet that rules the sign on the second house
cusp becomes the ruler of the lost article. However, if the Querent
is asking the question for his son or daughter, then the chart would
have to be turned so that the fifth house cusp (house of children)
becomes the Ascendant or first house. The chart’s natural sixth
house would then become the second house ruling the lost article.
It sounds confusing at first, but the person who is looking for his
lost object becomes more important than the person who asks
the question. Tuming the chart for the proper Ascendant does not
14 Lose this book... and find it with horary

have to be done when the Querent asks the question for himself.
When counting houses be sure to always start with
the first house of the chart and count that as #1. For instance,
if you ask a question about your sister begin counting with the
Querent (that's you and the Ascendant) which is the first house,
and count that as 1. Then count 2 and 3, land in the 3rd house
and that is your sister.

Here’s another exam ple following this same house pattern.

Aman calls up and asks the question, “Where is my sister’s book?”
The man is the Querent and is designated by the Ascendant. Now,
count three houses from the first house, which is the third house
(sister) and the new Ascendant. This is the sister. Now to find the
house that rules her book. Remember, for this next count begin
with the third house ruling the sister. Two houses from that is the
fourth house. So the sister’s book is ruled by the 4th house. The
natural third house becomes house # 1 for the sister, and the natural
fourth house becomes house #2 for her lost item.
Here’s another practice example. Assume you are asking
about your lawyer’s lost document. The lawyer is ruled by the
seventh house so his lost document is the - Right! It’s the eighth
house because that’s the second house from the seventh!
Turning the Chart 15

And here’s still another example: You ask, “Where is my

mother’s lost pin?” Start at the Ascendant, which is you. Now
you have to turn the chart to the natural tenth house (which rules
your mother), then go to the eleventh house (the new second house)
to see what’s doing with her lost article. If you ask a question for
your friend then the eleventh house becomes the new Ascendant
and the 12th house becomes his lost article.

Now, we are going to complicate things just a bit more to dance

around the chart and count some more houses.
Let’s say you are looking for the house ruling your
brother’s friend’s child’s lost article. Begin by locating the house
ruling your brother. This would be the third house. Now, find his
friend, which is signified by the eleventh house. Count eleven
houses from the third. Remember, always begin counting with the
cusp of the house that you have just landed in. In this instance,
when we count eleven from the third, we arrive at the first house.
Next, to find the friend’s child (usually the fifth house) begin with
the cusp of the first house, count that as one and count five houses.
Upon completing this procedure we arrive at the fifth house of the
radical chart. Always begin with the relationship or connection
16 Lose this book... and find it with horary

that is closest to the Querent and continue from there. Now count
two houses from the fifth to show the child’s lost item, which is
ruled by sixth house ruler.
I don’t want to belabor counting houses but it is an essential
part of accurate horary reading.
Here’s another example: Assume you were looking for
your mother’s employee’s husband’s friend. Remember always
start with the tie closest to the Querent who, in this example, would
be your mother. Then go to her employee, and then to the
employee’s husband, and, lastly, to his friend. Now, let’s count.
We'll start with the tenth house (your mother), count six
houses (her employee) and arrive at the third house. Continue to
the employee’s husband which is the seventh from the third and
brings us to the ninth. Finally, continue on to the husband’s friend
which is the eleventh from the ninth circling us around to land in
the seventh. We find the planet ruling the seventh house cusp as
the ruler of your mother's employee’s husband’s friend. Simple?
- Sure!

After you get the ‘hang’ of turning the chart it actually

becomes fun! As you continue reading horaries, make notes on
the various relationships that you come across as this will provide
valuable information as your skill matures. Finding the rulerships
is vital for accuracy in horary reading and turning of the chart is an
Turning the chart 17

art that, once mastered, produces great reward and success. Refer
to Chapter 8 describing the various relationships between the
Querent and the houses.
Now, as with all rules in life, it seems that there are always
some exceptions and horary is no different! There are some
exceptions that do not require turning the chart. If the Querent
asks a question for her son who lives with her, do not turn the
chart. In this instance, we won’t turn the chart because the son
lives with the mother and the compass directions have to be taken
from the mother’s residence. If the chart were turned the fifth
house would become an angular house (acting as the Ascendant)
and that would give a false reading for compass directions to find
the lost article.
Instead, use the sixth house ruler for the location of the
lost article of her son (the 2nd from the Sth). If the question had
been asked for a child that does not live with the Querent, then
the chart would have to be turned, using the fifth house for the
Ascendant or east direction and use that house for compass
directions. Now the natural fifth house becomes an angular house
and all the suceedent houses of the natural wheel would be angular.
From there proceed to find the directions using angular, suceedent
and cadent houses with the turned chart.

CHAPTER 6

DESCRIPTION AND VALUE OF

AN ARTICLE
The planet ruling the cusp of the second house will help
describe the value of the lost item. Any aspect that it makes to
other planets within 2 degrees will help in establishing a clearer
description and the worth of the item in question. Any planets
found in the second house will also contribute information to the
value of the item.
The SUN indicates that the article might be made of
precious metals such as gold, brass or other bright, shiny materials,
usually yellow or orange in color. The shape may be round like
the orb of the Sun itself. The Sun increases the value of whatever
is lost and often shows it to be a rare item; the value is high either
in cash or because of its scarcity. It may also be indicate that the
article was a gift.
The MOON shows an article made of silver, opal, pearl,
a soft, smooth substance with a silvery, shimmering look. It shows
an ordinary item that could be used on a daily basis. 1 he item
might be a common household item with an ordinary appearance.
It could be a family heirloom, honoring years of family tradition,
or a gift from a family member. The Moon will indicate a rather
subjective value, which can change in accordance with the sign
that the Moon is in and the aspects that it makes.
MERCURY shows that the item is small and inexpensive
but very useful. It could be a book, bookmark, pencil, paper,
Description and Value of an Article 19

sewing needles, mirrors, keys or the like. Mercurial items are

probably the most useful of all in our daily lives. If there is an
aspect from Mercury to the Moon, the item could be a small
souvenir. Mercury in aspect to Mars shows a sharp, useful item
or a small tool. And if in aspect to Venus, the Sun, or Jupiter, the
item will increase in value. If the aspect is to Saturn then the item
is old and worn out but still useful. When in aspect to Neptune
the article is worthless; to Uranus the aspect means that the item
can be unusual, mechanical or electrical in nature.
VENUS indicates a smart looking item and unless there
is an aspect to Mercury, Saturn, or Mars, the item is not particularly
useful. The article may be made of copper, bronze, or a polished,
reflective substance from which jewelry is usually made. Venus
also rules an item of art or creativity. It deals with items that will
beautify people, the home, or environment in some way. On its
own Venus always enhances the value, but if aspected to Jupiter
or the Sun it will increase the value even more. If aspected to
Mars or Neptune, the value will decrease. Aspects to Neptune
or Mars can often make the object a fake or imitation copy. When
Venus is aspecting Saturn, the item may be a valuable antique;
and if in aspect to Uranus is will be an unusual piece with a good
value.
MARS rules articles that will usually be alone. It rules
tools and machinery. Items ruled by Mars may be made out of
steel, pewter, iron or metal made from a firing and/or smelting
process. If Mars aspects Uranus it may be an item associated
with an electrical function. The item will be old and worn out
when Mars and Saturn are in aspect. Mars will always indicate a
decrease or cut in the price (maybe through bargaining) though
the value of the item will remain the same.
JUPITER rules articles that are large and much more
valuable. The items may be articles of clothing, religious objects,
college materials, or merchandised items. It could be an item that
was purchased while traveling or a souvenir. Jupiter will show the
item to be of good or high quality material and expensive. An
aspect to Jupiter will increase the value of an item.
20 Lose this book... and find it with horary

SATURN shows the article to be old and worn out, but

still useful so that the owner will still feel its loss if it is missing. The
item could be made of rubber, glass, stone, iron, wool or leather,
and is usually dark in color. If it is aspected to Jupiter, the Sun or
Venus, the item could be a valuable antique. Saturn shows an
object used for business or work. An aspect to Saturn may show
much sorrow attached to the article. If aspected to a planet in
Scorpio, Capricorn, or to Pluto, consider the item as a piece of
junk. The same holds true if Saturn is peregrine in the chart.
Saturn will always decrease the value of an item.
URANUS shows an article that is unique, one-of-a-kind
and rather unusual in nature. It could easily have to do with
electricity, electronics and the like. It could be electronic
equipment, such as a computer, radio, TV, CD's, telescope, stereo,
tape recorder, microwave, etc. When aspected to Mercury it will
be related to communication and its tools. If in aspect with Venus
it could be a very rare and unique piece of art. If it is aspecting
Mars it could be mechanical in nature or have to do with moving
vehicles. Uranus will have an unpredictable effect on the value,
generally not increasing the value at all.
NEPTUNE will indicate items with very little value, and
are probably along the line of a show piece. The item may have
an unknown or mysterious history surrounding it. It can indicate
photographic supplies, glass, synthetics or artificial materials.
Neptune indicates articles that are actually worth less than what
was actually paid for them. It shows that you were somehow
deceived about its value and, perhaps, paid too much for it.
PLUTO shows an item with very little use, which usually
occupies more space than what it is worth. It rules articles made
from plastic, so it wears out quickly. Pluto confuses the issue of
the item’s value and price. It always is difficult to establish value
when it aspects a planet in Scorpio.
The Five Significators 21

CHAPTER 7

THE FIVE SIGNIFICATORS

There are five major significators in the horary chart that
help in locating lost articles. These are given in order of their
strength:

1. The planet ruling the second house cusp

2. The Moon
3. The Part of Fortune
4. The Dispositor of the Part of Fortune
5. Venus, the natural ruler of the second house

Each of these five significators has to be scrutinized very

closely in order to paint an accurate picture of the exact location
ofa missing item.
* If any of these significators are found in an angular
house, the lost article is in the home, place of business or the
place where you think the item was lost. The more significators
that appear in the angular houses, the stronger the indication that
the lost article is in the home.
* If they fall in suceedent houses, the a rticle is not in t he
home but close by, possibly outside on the property or at the
farthest point in the neighborhood.
* Significators in cadent houses show the item to be far
away, possibly in a strange neighborhood or out of town.
It is important to weigh all of the five significators in order
22 Lose this book... and find it with horary

to establish which type of these three houses has the most influence.
Remember, i f the Moon or the second house ruler is in an
angular house, then the object is in the home. However, it is not
enough to show that the article is in the home if either just the
dispositor of the Pa rt of Fortune or Venus is angular in placement.
Both need to be angular. If that were the situation and we were to
find the Moon and second house ruler both in cadent houses, the
article would not be in the home. 1 say this because the weight of
the Moon and the second house ruler are greater and overrule the
lesser strengths of the other significators.
Each significator must be examined one at a time along
with the house and sign in which they fall. This can become quite
confusing. To facilitate ease in determining the strength of the
houses and significators. I’ve assigned numerical values to each
significator. The following table will be ofhelp:

Significator Numerical Weight

Second House Ruler 4 points

Moon 4points
Part of Fortune 3points
Dispositor of Part of Fortune 2 points
Venus 1 point

To use the table, simply tally up the points each carries in

the horary chart to find out which house carries more weight.
This house will establish whether the object is in the home, near
the home or far away, and then indicate the whereabouts of the
missing item. The next thing to do is to check for interceptions,
retrograde planets or significators, mutual reception and/or
Translation/Collection of Light (see Chapter 21), and then
determine if the item is lost, mislaid or stolen. All of these help to
weave a story to arrive at the answer.
Another aid to piecing t ogether a veiy acc urate description
of the location of the missing item can be found by looking at all
the close aspects of the five significators. The zodiac signs in
The Five Significators 23

which they are placed will yield amazing details. For instance, an
aspect to Saturn or a planet in Capricorn will show a comer, a
place that is dark, messy, old or deteriorated. Observe all aspects,
within 2 degrees, that any significators make with other planets in
the chart to glean additional descriptions of the location.
When there is an aspect to the Sun or planets in Leo, then
it is in a well lighted place, a hall, a well furnished area; aspected
to the Moon indicates that the item is well worn and among
furnishings, cellars, kitchens; to Mercury, or a planet in Gemini or
Virgo, shows the item near paper, desks, studies, books, or in a
library. An aspect to Venus, or a planet in Taurus or Libra, points
to a dresser, bedroom, clothes or drawers; to Mars, or a planet
in Aries, the missing item is likely to be among tools, sharp objects,
a furnace, fireplace, oven or stove.
As stated above an aspect to Saturn indicates a comer or
dark place while an aspect to Jupiter, or a planet in Sagittarius,
shows something large or expensive. It could indicate a library,
college, legal office, souvenirs, items used for traveling or where
expensive belongings are kept. An aspect to Uranus, or planet in
Aquarius, shows an attached shelf or closet. An aspect to
Neptune, or a planet in Pisces, shows that it is well hidden, in a
secluded place or mislaid; to Pluto, or a planet in Scorpio, the
indication is in a dump, a dirty place or in the trash or garbage.
Let's look at this example: For our purposes Mercury in
Virgo will be one of the five significators, trine the Sun in Capricorn,
squaring Venus in Sagittarius, within 2 degrees. First of all, Mercury
in Virgo would point to a library, study, office or desk. The Sun
indicates a well furnished room or a beautiful, ornate desk;
Capricorn speaks of a disarranged, disorderly room, a messy
desk in a dark comer or darkened room. Venus indicates the top
of a desk, a top drawer or in a closet while Sagittarius denotes a
large desk, large room or expensive things. When we take each
isolated description and begin to blend them a description of the
location of the missing article may be stated in this way:
“The article may be in a study or an office in the home, a
room where important papers are kept or a dark room which is
24 Lose this book... and find it with horary

quite disorderly. It may be found in any of the following areas: in

a desk in the darkest comer of the room or in the largest drawer
or perhaps in a closet on the shelf in the darkest, messiest comer.”
To further pinpoint the location, follow the compass
directions that are designated by each sign. Refer to the chapters
on Directions as well as Houses in the Horary Chart (Chapter 8)
for further clarification of locations.
Houses in the Horary Chart 25

CHAPTER 8

HOUSES IN THE HORARY

CHART
There are three types of houses in most astrological chart
systems; they are called Angular, Suceedent, and Cadent
houses. Below are the strengths and significance of each house
type:

THE ANGULAR HOUSES are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th

The angular houses are the strongest in locating lost articles.

The act of initiating is inherent in angular houses and, when
prominent in the horary chart, they immediately get the search
26 Lose this book... and find it with horary

underway. When highlighted they also make the lost object

relatively easy to locate. Recovery time is just a matter of minutes,
hours or days, and will be even more highly accelerated if the
Moon is also angular. The highest rate of recovery will come
when the Moon is both angular and in a cardinal sign. Angles
indicate that the lost item is in the home, place of business or the
place where you think you lost or left it.

THE SUCEEDENT HOUSES are the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th

The suceedent houses are the next in command regarding

lost articles. When these houses are active, the article is not clearly
visible and needs a more thorough search. The recovery time,
too, will be much longer, taking days, weeks, or months. The
physical location of the item will not be in the home, but rather in
or near the neighborhood or property line.
Houses in the Horary Chart 27

THE CADENT HOUSES are the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th

The cadent houses are the weakest of all in offering

assistance in locating missing articles. They show the lost item to
be well hidden with recovery time taking the longest, being marked
by days, months or even years. If recovery is desired a most
diligent search is needed. It reveals that the article is far away
from home, and must be searched for in strange neighborhoods
and unfamiliar places. Cadent houses mean that the object is well
hidden or in a place that is obscure, making it extremely hard to
find.
The rulership of planets, signs and houses is singularly the
most important information necessary to interpret horary astrol ogy.
The key factor of all horary is based on how well the astrologer
can work with the rulerships. Unless you are using the right rulers,
the judgment chart will never deliver the correct answer. The
remainder of this chapter will present the rulerships with their most
commonly used corresponding places and persons found in the
chart. Refer to Chapter 15 for more descriptions of persons
ruled by the planets and houses.
28 Lose this book... and find it with horary

FIRST HOUSE
This signifies a personal place to the Querent, a place or
room in which the Querent spends a lot of time or keeps his
personal belongings, the father’s place of business, a friend’s
neighborhood, grandparent, sibling’s friends, nephews and nieces
of the spouse, and great grandchildren. It rules places as described
by Aries or Mars. It may be in a room painted red, with red trim
or has red objects in the room.

SECOND HOUSE
This location of the lost article indicates that it might be
among valuable possessions; places where you keep a cash box
or a safe. It indicates places where money might be kept, valuables,
a checkbook or jewelry box. It rules the children’s place of
business, home of friends, step-children’s home, father’s friends,
your daughter or son’s step children, bankers, investors. It also
rules the future and places or rooms described by Taurus or Venus.

THIRD HOUSE
Under the jurisdiction of the third house comes the
immediate neighborhood, office or study, areas containing books,
papers, letters, office supplies, mail boxes and automobiles. An
aunt’s or uncles’ place of business, father’s employment firm, a
friend’s child, lover’s friends, brother and sisters neighborhood,
visitors, teachers, postal workers, the mother’s place of work. It
rules places as described by Gemini or Mercury.

FOURTH HOUSE
This house rules the father’s room or his belongings, a

or sister’s spouses, grandchildren, professors, strangers, in-laws,
travelers, travel agents, father’s place of employment, and all places
described by Sagittarius and Jupiter.

TENTH HOUSE
With the tenth house ruling the article a search may be
needed in the place of business, a room in your home where
business is conducted, a room where the mother spends much of
her time, a business partner’s place of residence, children’s place
of employment, niece’s or nephew’s home, among in-laws
belongings. It rules the motherjudges, presidents, superiors,
employers, cousins, the government and all places described by
Capricorn and Saturn.

or sister’s place of business, the mother's neighborhood, the in
law’s home, the spouse’s place of employment, sibling’s place of
business, your friend’s belongings, places where drugs, alcohol,
gases, photographic equipment are kept. It rules secret enemies,
large animals, prisons, bedrooms, hospitals, poisons and describes
places indicated by Pisces and Neptune. If any of the five
significators are in the twelfth house the article will be well hidden
and quite difficult to find.

CHAPTER 10

THE MOON IN THE HORARY

CHART
The Moon is the most important heavenly body in the
horary chart; that is to say it is the most powerful and influential
body for this distinct chart of the hour.
To better comprehend this omnipotent planetary energy,
we can liken the Moon to the Queen of a chessboard. Just as the
Queen controls the entire board with her omnipotent power, the
Moon controls the horary chart. The Moon is always the co
rnier of both the Querent and the question. Like the Queen, she
moves with authority so that the more moves or aspects she makes,
the more information she brings forth, indicating a greater amount
of action in the search.
The Moon plays a vital part in locating the lost article by
helping to describe the l ocation of the lost article by the house and
sign in which it is positioned. It also aids in pointing out the past
and future actions needed to recover the lost article. This, of
course, is done by noting and utilizing the aspects that the Moon
made and will make, known as the separating and applying
aspects.
The Moon’s power is apparent and used from the time it
enters a sign right up until the time it exits that same sign. In other
words, if the Moon in the chart is at 15 degrees of Aries, we use
all the aspects it makes from 0 degrees Aries to 29 degrees Aries
- a frill 30 degrees of Aries. If and when the Moon does not make
The Moon in the Horary Chart 41

any aspect before leaving the sign, it then becomes known as a

‘Void of Course’ Moon.
Example: Suppose the horary chart has Venus at 15
degrees of Libra, Jupiter at 21 degrees of Leo, the Moon at 16
degrees of Aries, and no other planets at 21 degrees plus. The
Moon’s last separating aspect was an opposition to Venus, and
it’s next aspect is applying a trine to Jupiter. The trine to Jupiter
would be the Moon’s last or final aspect before it leaves Aries.
After the Moon reaches the trine to Jupiter it then becomes ‘Void
of Course’. If the Moon was at 22 degrees of Aries, it would
actually have been a ‘Void of Course’ Moon. While most
astrologers do not read a chart that has a ‘Void of Course’ Moon,
my experience with horary charts for lost articles shows that the
‘Void of Course’ Moon has little or no bearing on the result. Nor
does it interfere with gathering pertinent information from the chart
for an accurate reading.
When the Queen is lost in a chess game it does not
necessarily mean that the game is lost, although the player does
have to sharpen his skill and use more caution. If the horary chart
has a ‘Void of Course’ Moon the same principle holds true. In
both cases, all the other tools are still available for use to their
fullest capacity.
To discover who had or touched the lost article last,
always look to the planet that the Moon has previously passed
over by conjunction, regardless of how many houses or signs
back it may have been. If the planet that the Moon last passed
over was the ruler of the fifth house, or if the conjunction was to a
planet in the fifth house, then your son, daughter or lover probably
had the lost article last. It may have been left in the son’s or
daughter’s bedroom or among his/her belongings. If it involves
the ruler of the thi rd house or a planet in the third house, a brother
or sister had it last. If it involves the seventh house then your partner
or spouse probably had it last. And a friend most likely had it last
when the eleventh house is involved. This process applies
respectively to all the houses in determining who last had possession
of the article.
42 Lose this book... and find it with horary

If the Moon last passed over the planet Saturn, check the
relationship of the house that Saturn is in, and also the house that
has Capricorn on its cusp. If Saturn rules the seventh house then
a spouse or partner, anybody associated with the seventh house,
could have had the item last.
Now, as the Moon movesforwardtowards its first aspect,
it reveals what can be expected first as the search for recovery
begins. If the first aspect is a trine, sextile, or conjunction to a
benefic then all will start well in the recovery process, while an
opposition, square or conjunction to a malefic shows potential
problems in getting started. If the Moon makes more applying
aspects to malefic or retrograde planets, there will be more
frustration and obstacles regarding the search. The following is a
list of the Moon’s aspects to the various planets and their
corresponding implications:

Venus - cooperation, harmony

Mercury - impatience, restlessness, need for using
more details
Sun - ambition, idealism
Mars - independence, positiveness, quick to take
action
Jupiter - optimism, reward
Saturn - seriousness, discipline, caution
Uranus - unpredictable, carefree
Neptune - unrealistic, intuitive, forgetful
Pluto - motivated, scientific, suspicious

These indicators will tell how the client will initiate his search
while the Moon’s final aspect will always indicate the final
outcome. The aspects and the planets involved will show the
results that can be expected at the very end of the matter.
Additionally, the first aspect that the Moon makes will
point to where the search for the lost article should begin. For
example, if the first aspect of the Moon is to Venus in Libra, the
lost article may be found in a drawer that is located in a bedroom
The Moon in the Horary Chart 43

or in any other areas ruled by Venus. This rule applies no matter

what planet is involved with the Moon’s first aspect. For further
descriptions of these locations please refer to other chapters in
the book.

CHAPTER 11

THE MOON’S LAST ASPECT

Perhaps of all the configurations of the horary chart, the
most important factor in determining the final outcome of the
situation is the Moon’s last aspect. To be more exact, it is the
last aspect that the Moon makes before it leaves the sign that
does determine the final outcome.
Tf the last aspect of the Moon is a fortunate one (trine,
sextile or conjunction) to Venus, Jupiter, Sun, North Node or
Part of Fortune, then the lost article will definitely be found or
replaced. Recovery is also promised if the Moon’s last aspect is
a trine, sextile or conjunction to one of the five significators, to the
ruler of the fifth house, ruler of the Querent, the Ascendant, or to
a planet in the first, second or fifth houses. When the last aspect
is a trine, sextile or conjunction to Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
or Pluto, the article will be found only after delays, hard searching,
unexpected turns and confusion, unless one of these planets is a
significator. In that case, the energy does not manifest in a negative
way. If the last aspect is a square or opposition, the article might
never be found, especially if the square is to a malefic or one of
the five significators, ruler of the fifth house, ruler of the Querent,
the Ascendant or planets in the first, second or fifth houses.
If the Moon’s last conjunction (previous conjunction) was
to a retrograde planet, the indication is that the lost article is inside
something or has fallen behind something. This condition may
mean that the object may have been damaged or something is
The Moon's Last Aspect 45

missing from it. This aspect could also indicate that the person
who had the article last deliberately hid it. If the Moon’s last
conjunction was to an intercepted planet, the indication is that the
article is squeezed between something. Intercepted and retrograde
planets indicate that a more complete search is needed to uncover
the lost article.
If a square or opposition to a retrograde planet is the
Moon's last aspect, chances are that the lost article will never be
found, especially if it is in aspect to a malefic. If the planet being
aspected by the Moon is a benefic then the item may be recovered,
however, it is usually only by ‘ accident’. If the Moon’s last aspect
is a trine, sextile or conjunction to a planet that is retrograde, the
article will be recovered but only afte r delays and hours of ca reful,
thorough searching. If the Moon’s last aspect is to an intercepted
planet the implications of a retrograde planet apply to the situation
and even more strongly if there is a further complication by a
square or opposition to an intercepted malefic. In these instances,
the article will usually remain lost forever.
The Moon’s position in sign and house are additional
indications whether or not there is a likelihood of recovering the
missing article. Here is a quick reference guide:

Moon’s Position and Likely Outcome

CHAPTER 12

THE MOON’S NODES

AND RECOVERY
The Nodes of the Moon are not planets or stars. Rather,
they are points in the heavens where the Moon crosses the ecliptic
into the Northern and Southern latitudes. They are respectively
referred to as the North Node and South Node, also known as
the Dragon’s Head and the Dragon’s Tail. The North Node
is considered benefic, having an expansive Jupiterian effect;
denoting growth, attachment and commencement. The South
Node is regarded as malefic, having a Saturnian effect. In the
horary chart it shows the breaking apart of any situation with which
it comes into contact. Any aspect between the nodes and any of
the significators will determine the Querent’s possible chances of
retrieving the lost article.
The position of the North Node, both in the Ephemeris
and in the chart, is given in numerical figures the same way planetaiy
positions are designated. The South Node, however, is not given
in the Ephemeris but is always in the opposite sign at the same
degree as the North Node so that the Dragon’s tail (South Node)
is directly opposite the Dragon’s head (North Node). Example:
In the Ephemeris the North Node on March 24, 1993 is at 14
Sagittarius 51; the South Node, therefore, will be at 14 Gemini
51.
If a planet forms a T-Square to these Nodes it is treated
as a separating aspect; never as an attachment or connection. If
The Moon's Nodes and Recovery 47

the Moon or the planet ruling the Querent is applying a trine or

sextile to the North Node the indication is strong that the lost
article will be recovered. When the Moon or the ruler of the
Querent is applying a conjunction to the North Node (making it in
opposition to the South Node) it should be considered an
attachment which will also bring the article back to the owner.
When it applies a conjunction to the South Node the indication is
one of detachment with the lost article. Be sure to note the Moon’s
last aspect as well. If it is to one of the nodes it can be readily
determined whether it is an attachment or detachment by following
the formula mentioned above.
Like all aspects in astrology the conjunction is the strongest.
The same holds true with the Nodes. They are strongest when in
a conjunction aspect. If one of the five significators ruling the lost
article is a trine, sextile or conjunction with the North Node, then
the lost item is more visible and easier to find. If they are in square
or opposition to the North Node (conversely this will form a square
or conjunction with the South Node), then the lost item will be
concealed and more difficult to find.

CHAPTER 13

LOST, MISLAID, OR STOLEN

ARTICLES
A missing article can be classified into three categories:
lost, mislaid, or stolen. Most missing articles are categorized as
lost or mislaid in as much as they are not valuable enough to have
been stolen but are important enough to want back. If the article
is lost it means that the Querent has no idea as to where it might
be and have searched for some time without success. If the article
is mislaid, which is the most common cause of missing articles,
generally the Querent had it in hand and has simply forgotten where
he placed it.
Knowing whether the article has been mi slaid is helpful to
the search because to some extent the Querent has some
recollection of his previous actions. If the article is stolen it was
taken by someone else other than the Querent and chances are
that it will not be recovered unless the thief is identified and
ownership is established.

Indicators of Mislaid items

The following indicators are vitally important in establishing
whether or not the article has been mislaid. The fourth house,
called the ‘mislaid’ house, and Neptune, the planet of forgetfulness,
both play important roles in determining whether or not an object
is mislaid. If any of the five significators make an aspect to the
fourth house cusp, the ruler of that cusp, to Neptune or to planets
Lost, Mislaid or Stolen Articles 49

in the fourth we can safely regard the article as mislaid. This is

also true if the above specifications make aspects to each other.
If the ruler of the second or fourth house, and/or the Moon or
Neptune are found in the first house then the object has been
mislaid. This is also true if the rulers of the first, second and fourth
houses or the Moon make an aspect to Neptune.
Other indications of mislaid articles are seen when the
ruler of the first house is in good aspect to the Moon, to the second
or fourth house rulers or planets in the fourth house. If the Moon’s
last conjunction was to the ruler of the first house, ruler of the
fourth house, to Neptune or to any planet in the fourth house, it
can be determined that the article is mislaid. If Neptune is located
in the fourth house or is strong in the chart the indication is, again,
that the article has been mislaid.

Indicators of Stolen items

The following indicators will help determine if the article
has been stolen. If the ruler of the first house, the ruler of the
second house, or the Moon makes a negative (separating) aspect
to the ruler of the seventh house, the seventh house cusp or any
malefic present therein, then the article has been stolen. If any of
the significators are separating from a square, opposition or a
conjunction to the seventh house ruler, the seventh house cusp, or
malefics in the seventh house, the article has been stolen.

Indicators of the thief

The sign on the seventh house cusp, the planet ruling the
seventh house, the sign of the seventh house ruler or any planet
located in the seventh house will help describe the thief. The
house in which the ruler of the seventh sits will describe the
relationship of the thief to the Querent. If the planet ruling the
seventh house is situated in the seventh house, it may indicate a
partner or spouse; if in the third house then it points to a sibling or
a neighbor while if in the fourth house the indication is someone
living in the same house or the father. The fifth house points to a
son or daughter taking the item; the sixth shows an employee, the
50 Lose this book... and find it with horary

eighth shows a tax collector or undertaker, the ninth points to a

stranger, the tenth refers to someone at work or the mother. In
the eleventh house it may be a friend or a fellow club member and
the twelfth indicates a secret enemy.
This method of determining ‘who l ives in each house’ can
be analyzed in many ways to determine relationships. If there is
no indication of theft then consider the article to be lost or mislaid
and read on more to see if recovery is predicted.
Aspects 51

CHAPTER 14

ASPECTS
An aspect is a term used to determine the angular
relationship between two planets in the zodiac. All aspects are
calculated in degrees. An orb is a tolerance (in degrees) that is
allowed between two planets which still permits them to be
considered in aspect to one another. If we allow a 10 degree orb
this would mean that the aspect would become in for ce 10 degrees
before being exact. This is known as an applying aspect and it
would remain in force until 10 degrees past the exact point. This
is known as a separating aspect. For example, if there is a planet
at 6 degrees of Libra, a conjunction aspect would be in force
from 26 degrees Virgo and remain in force up to 16 degrees of
Libra. (10 degrees on each side) Until it reaches 6 degrees of
Libra, it is regarded as an applying aspect and after that, through
16 degrees of Libra, it becomes a separating aspect.
The tighter or smaller the orb the stronger the energy
between the planets. If two planets are in aspect at the same
degree they are in an exact aspect known as a partile aspect.
This particular aspect is very powerful and becomes quite
important in the horary chart. In referring to an aspect we always
name the faster moving planet f irst and that helps in distinguishing
whether an aspect is applying or separating.
Example: Suppose there is a trine between Mercury at
10 degrees Virgo and Mars at 15 Capricorn. Knowing that
Mercury is a faster moving planet we can determine that Mercury
52 Lose this book... and find it with horary

is applying a trine to Mars by an orb of 5 degrees. Mars could

never apply to Mercury.
Applying and separating aspects are important in horary
work. By noting all separating aspects you will know what has
already transpired regarding the question. With this information it
is easier to check to see if the chart is radical. If the past action
shows up through the separating aspects there will be verification
that the time taken for the question was correct and the chart that
will tell the truth of the story. This correct information provides
what is known as the ‘signature’ in the chart. Based on my
experience I feel that this is the only accurate way to find out if the
chart is radical and fit to be judged. If all the separating aspects
show the correct past action of the event then there is a solid
foundation to observe all applying aspects and determine, with
accuracy, all future action. The applying aspects will now help
you predict the outcome and guide the Querent in his search.
More aspects in the chart will indicate more action about the article.
If there are more separating aspects than applying it means that
most of the action has already taken place and less action can be
expected in the future. In some ways this can actually simplify the
process of locating and recovering the item.
An 8 degree orb is recommended when considering one
of the five major aspects and the faster moving planets like Mercury,
Venus and the Sun. A10 degree orb is appropriate for the more
powerful planets which include Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune and Pluto. I’ve also had good luck using a 10 degree
orb all around.

ONLY THE FIVE MAJOR ASPECTS ARE USED FOR

SUCCESSFUL HORARIES
Conjunction: Same degrees in longitude
Sextile: 60 degrees apart (2 signs)
Square: 90 degrees apart (3 signs)
Trine: 120 degrees apart (4 signs)
Opposition: 180 degrees apart (6 signs)
Conjunctions, trines and sextiles are known as
Aspects 53

benefics or easy aspects. These may indicate a favorable

outcome for the Querent and show a ‘yes’ answer. Squares and
oppositions are known as malefics or hard aspects indicating
unfavorable outcomes for the Querent, revealing a ‘no’ answer.

CONJUNCTIONS
Two planets form a conjunction when they are in the same
degrees (Plus and minus 10 degrees for the orb). In other words
if they occupy the same longitude within plus and minus 10 degrees
in the heavens, they are said to be in conjunction. Jhe conjunction
is the strongest aspect in horary and represents a cooperative
aspect bringing together whatever is asked. You can always look
for help through the significance attached to the planet or sign in
which the conjunction takes place.
When the Querent’s ruling planet conjuncts one of the
important significators, the matter is left to the Querent’s own
choice. Conjunctions bring people together (their minds,
belongings, etc.) and tend to bring matters back to the inquirer
with all the cooperation that he needs to satisfactorily solve the
matter. If the conjunction is in a cardinal sign and in an angular
house then immediate action will take place. If the conjunction
occurs in a suceedent house the action will begin after a while and
take longer to resolve but will still result favorably. If in a cadent
house the action will seem to never take place unless considerable
effort is expended. Even with a supreme effort to get the search
underway the efforts may never come to fruition. And, even if it
does, the end of the matter may not be at all what was expected.

SEXTILES
The sextile offers opportunities to acquire what is desired
if the Querent makes the effort to act right away. The opportunities
will materialize and come to pass with very little effort. An applying
sextile from a cadent house indicates that the Querent may tend to
wait too long for an opportunity to act, letting it slip through his
fingers, making it much harder to bring about a successful
conclusion. The sextile, like the conjunction and trine, shows that
54 Lose this book... and find it with horary

the answer is always in favor of the Querent. If the aspect is

applying, the opportunity is about to present itself, however, if the
aspect is separating, the opportunity has just passed by. Always
check the houses involving the sign and planets in order to locate
how the opportunity is being presented.

OPPOSITIONS
An opposition suggests an effect of "pulling apart." This
is an unfortunate aspect which often brings about envy or jealousy.
An opposition can cause separation, such as divorce, dissolution
of a partnership or a break-away from what was together. The
Querent will never materialize the matter in an opposition unless
the two significators are in mutual reception (see Chapter 15 on
Mutual Reception) so that they can work together to overcome
the handicap. Always look for oppositions in the chart to determine
who or what is working against the Querent in the matter at hand.
The opposition is the most difficult aspect to overcome to achieve
any favorable outcome in a horary chart. Where there is an
opposition there are people, places or things working against the
Querent, however, the more effort made the more the likelihood
there is to achieve a favorable outcome.

SQUARES
The square shows obstacles a nd difficulties to be overcome
regarding the question. It is best not to try to materialize what is
asked because even with great effort many losses can occur. If
the significators arc in a fixed sign and in an angular house the
Querent may reach success despite the squares. Success may
come, too, when the significator is in a suceedent or cadent house,
but only after much difficulty. Often, though, the Querent has to
put in a monumental effort only to find that the demand is too
much, thus frequently giving up and taking the loss.
Always look at the squares in the horary chart to find out
from whom or where the obstacles or setbacks are coming. These
will show up in the house and sign from which the square is
applying. A separating square will show a past obstacle. If more
Aspects 55

than one square is applying in the chart the Querent should probably
be advised to drop his project because his efforts will most likely
be for nought. If the significator is surrounded with benefic aspects
but is applying to a square, he can overcome the malefic energies
of the square to bring about favorable results. However, in this
case, great perseverance and determination will be needed on his
part.
TRINES
The trine is considered to be the best aspect in the chart.
It brings success more easily than any other aspect. In fact, things
will happen even without the Querent trying or putting any effort
into the matter. A trine from an angular house brings a speedy
resolution which will be readily accepted by the Querent. From a
suceedent and cadent house the resolution is equally easy but will
take a little more time to materialize. Always check the house and
sign from which the trine is applying to discover the approach to
take for an easier and more favorable outcome.
A grand trine is one of the most favorable aspects in the
chart. It is composed of three planets in trine to each other, with
each planet in one of each of the signs of the same element. A
grand trine guarantees the Querent an outcome more favorable
than what he might have expected.

CHAPTER 15

MUTUAL RECEPTION
When two planets are positioned in the other’s ruling sign
they are said to be in Mutual Reception. For example, on a certain
day Saturn is transiting through the sign of Leo and at the same
time the Sun is transiting through t he si gn of C apricorn. As S aturn
is the natural ruler of Capricorn and the Sun naturally rules Leo it
is said that these two planets are in mutual reception.
If the planet ruling the Ascendant (Querent) is in mutual
reception with another planet, then it means that another person
will be instrumental in locating the lost article for the Querent,
either by spending time actually searching, or by supplying some
information as to the whereabouts of the item. Be sure to take
note of the other planet that is part of the mutual reception with
the Querent as this will help describe the other party who will help
in the recovery. If the other planet is the Sun it will signify that the
other party may be male, possibly the father or a person in some
position of authority. If the other planet is the Moon the indication
is that the other party is female or perhaps the mother.
The following is a brief description of the planets and their
representative persons:

Mercury: a student, teacher, child

Venus: a young girl or lover
Mars: a young man
Jupiter: a stranger or student or clergyman
Mutual Reception 57

Saturnt an elder
Uranus', a friend
Neptune', an unknown person
Pluto', a group of people

For more in-depth descriptions of these assisting parties

check the house in which the planet forming the mutual reception
is located. If the mutual reception is from the first house, then
recovery is dependent solely upon the Querent’s own efforts.
Similarly, each house which has a planet forming a mutual reception
has corresponding descriptions of assisting parties. Briefly, they
are as follows:

First House-, you

Second House', financial advisor, banker
Third House', brothers, sisters, neighbors
Fourth House', family, the father, employer’s
children
Fifth House', children, boyfriends, girlfriends
Sixth House', employees, servants, tenants, aunts,
uncles
Seventh House', spouse, business partners,
strangers, nieces, nephews, lawyer
Eighth House', surgeon, loan sharks, psychologist,
undertaker
Ninth House', in-laws, pastor, minister, rabbi
Tenth House', mother, employer, authority, judge
Eleventh House", friends, club members, daughter
or son in-law
Twelfth House', a person calling with information

be aware of the fact that the missing article has been moved. Both
the sign and the house of that planet will help to describe the new
location of the a rticle. If any of the five signific ators are in m utual
reception with the Querent then the astrologer may assure the
Querent that the article will be recovered. Recovery is also
assured if one of the significators is in mutual reception with the
ruler of the fifth house cusp or any planets in the fifth house.
When two planets are in mutual reception they must be
read back into their own ruling sign with the same degree that they
possess in their present sign. In other words, if Mercury is at 10
degrees Taurus and Venus is at 25 degrees of Gemini they are in
mutual reception. In this instance, if Mercury was one of the five
significators you would read Mercury as if it were at 10 degrees
of Gemini. Now all aspects to Mercury would be read at 10
degrees of Gemini. If Venus was the important significator, all
aspects to Venus would be read at 25 degrees of Taurus. In our
example, it can be seen that the first reading of Mercury at 10
degrees of Taurus would have promised recovery but through
mutual reception the second position of Mercury, falling at 10
degrees of Gemini, negates the promise of recovery. Additionally,
this indicates that the item had been moved to another location
and could no longer be found.
Part of Fortune 59

CHAPTER 16

PART OF FORTUNE
The Part of Fortune, also called Fortuna, is an Arabian
point that is equi-distant from the Ascendant as the Moon, in
longitude, is from the Sun.
The formula for finding the Part of Fortune is:

Ascendant + Moon - Sun = Part of Fortune

Depending on the sign or house in which this point is

located, a person will be graced with ‘gain or fortune’ according
to his sense of value. If Fortuna is well aspected to the Moon,
Venus, Jupiter, Sun, Mercury, Ascendant, ruler of the Ascendant
or the ruler of the house in question, then the matter will improve
and develop favorably.
The Part of Fortune plays a major role in the actual process
of locating lost articles. If F ortuna or its dispositor is in an angular
house then the item is in the home, place of business or where the
Querent thinks it was left. In addition, the Part of Fortune will
help point to the direction of the lost item by its house and sign
placement, as well as describe the specific surroundings where
the lost article lay. The aspects it makes to the significators and
the rulers are important in helping resolve the question. For
instance, if the Moon makes a favorable aspect to the Part of
Fortune you can say “All that starts well, ends well.” If it makes
an unfavorable aspect, anticipate trouble and perhaps permanent
60 Lose this book... and find it with horary

loss of the article.

Example for calculating the Part of Fortune:
Remember, to translate the degrees into Absolute
Longitude and apply the formula stated above. Let’s say the Sun
is at 14.01 Libra. In Absolute Longitude it equals 194.01. If the
Moon is at 6.01 Sagittarius itwill equal 246.01 and if the Ascendant
is 2.49 Taurus it will equal 32.49 in absolute longitude.
Now apply these figures to the formula and you should have:
Ascendant + Moon - Sun = Part of Fortune 32.49 + 246.01-
194.01 = 84.49
which translates from Absolute Longitude to 24.49 of Gemini. If
the result is greater than a circle subtract 360 from the answer.
A couple of years ago my friend, astrologer Dr. J. Lee
Lehman, made me aware of the Day and N ight Part of Fortune. I
have been experimenting with this and find that it deserves much
merit. When the horary chart is erected during the day or when
the Sun is above the horizon, the Arabic Part is called the Part of
Fortune. This is the formula that we just calculated above in absolute
longitude: Ascendant + Moon - Sun.
However, when the chart is erected for when the Sun is
below the horizon, then this Arabic Part becomes the normal Part
of Spirit. The formula for the Part of Spirit is as follows:
Ascendant + the Sun - the Moon. Notice that the positions of
the Sun and Moon are switched for the Part of Fortune. For a
night birth the regular Part of Fortune becomes the Part of Spirit
and the Part of Spirit becomes the Part of Fortune.
Elements and Decanates 61

CHAPTER 17

ELEMENTS & DECANATES

The Elements are an invaluable aid in describing the
location and height at which the lost article might be.

FIRE SIGNS: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

The Fire signs designate places near fireplaces, stoves, furnaces
and places that have been burnt, are hot or contain fire or heat in
various forms. It shows that the lost item is midway in height and
points to the East.

EARTH SIGNS: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

The Earth signs show the article to be on the ground or on the
floor, the first floor of a multilevel building, a walkway or a cellar.
The compass direction indicated is South.

AIR SIGNS: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

The Air signs designate upper rooms, attics, rooftops. The article
is in an open area and at the highest possible place. The direction
itpointstois West.

WATER SIGNS: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

The Water signs point to places below ground level, cellars or
places near the water. The article will be at the lowest level in the
location and the direction is North.

DECANS AND DECANATES

An entire zodiac sign c ontains a total of 30 degrees which
are divided into 3 sections of 10 degrees each. Each 30 degree
section is known as a Decan. Each decan is ruled by a zodiac
sign of the same element. Each 10 degrees of the 30 degree
decan is called a decanate. Note that in the chart at the end of this
chapter each of the three decanates are all fire, earth, air or water.
Each zodiac sign is ruled by the regular rulerships for each
sign in each decan. The first decanate of a sign is ruled by the
natural ruler. The second decanate is ruled by the planet which
rules the following sign of the same element and the third decanate
by the preceding sign of the same element. For example, in the
decanate of Libra the first decan is ruled by Venus (Libra), the
second by Uranus (Aquarius) and the third decan is ruled by
Mercury (Gemini).
In judging a chart for the recovery of a lost article the
decanates play an important part in establishing the approximate
height of the article. For instance, if we are dealing with air signs,
we would have to look for the lost item in the highest part of the
house, and if the planet is in the first decanate (0 to 10 degrees of
the air sign) look for the item in the lowest section of the highest
part of the house. You see, we are looking in the lowest part of
the highest area, a likely place would be the floor of the attic. The
second decan (20 to 30 degrees) shows that the article is half
way up the highest part of the house and the third decan (20 to 30
degrees) indicates that the item is at maximum height in the highest
part of the house.

CHAPTER 18

FAVORABLE AND
UNFAVORABLE INDICATORS
The term ‘benefic’ refers to planets and aspects that are
opportune or favorable. The Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, North
Node and Part of Fortune are all considered benefic planets.
Trines, sextiles and conjunctions are the benefic aspects.
Favorable aspects to benefic planets promise a good outcome,
especially if the ruler of the first, second, and fifth houses is a
benefic and in the first, second or fifth houses. We mention the
fifth house because it is the fifth house that rules the end of the
matter for a lost article. Remember, the end of any matter is
always the fourth house from the house in question. In charts for
lost articles it is the fourth from the second which is the fifth.
When the Moon’s last aspect is a favorable one to a
benefic, the lost article will be recovered unless very strong
indications prove the opposite. However, even then the Querent
will probably still be quite satisfied with the final outcome which
may bring a resolution in the form of a replacement of the article
or reimbursement by insurance or payment. If the Moon’s last
aspect is unfavorable to a benefic the lost article may never be
found, unless other strong indications in the chart show recovery.
Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and the South Node
are considered unfavorable energies. A benefic aspect to any
one of these planets promises a slow and hard recovery. A square
or opposition to these planets from the ruler of the fifth house,
Favorable and Unfavorable Indicators 65

planets in the fifth or second, and especially from one of the

significators, will eliminate all hope of recovery. A conjunction
to an unfavorable planet is considered ill-natured unless the malefic
is one of the significators or ruler of the first, second or fifth houses.
If one of the significators is applying a conjunction to unfavorable
planets located in the first, second or fifth houses and is not
considered an important ruler, the article will not be found.
Mercury is considered a neutral planet in horary, but takes on the
colors of a benefic if it is a significator or the ruler of an important
house.

PLANETARY SPEEDS
The planets are listed in order of their speed with the faster
moving planets listed first:
1. Moon 6. Jupiter
2. Mercury 7. Saturn
3. Venus 8. Uranus
4. Sun 9. Neptune
5. Mars 10. Pluto

The following are the 12 zodiac signs in their order around

the ecliptic as well as their natural order as they appear around
the horoscope wheel:

1 st - Aries 7th - Libra

2nd - Taurus 8th - Scorpio
3rd - Gemini 9th - Sagittarius
4th - Cancer 1 Oth - Capricorn
5th - Leo 11th-Aquarius
6th - Virgo 12th - Pisces

TRIPLICITIES
There are three categories of signs: Cardinal, Fixed and
Mutable. Each of these categories contains four zodiac signs.
Planetary Speeds 67

The Cardinal signs are: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn

Cardinal signs denote initiation and action so the y promise
a quicker recovery of any lost or missing article. The recovery
time is usually in minutes, hours or days.

The Fixed signs are: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.

Fixed signs demonstrate stubbornness and fixity. They
bring about a slow recovery. The time involves weeks, months or
even years. If too many significators are in fixed signs the article
may never be recovered, especially if the significators are in cadent
houses.

The Mutable signs (also known as Common signs) are: Gemini,

Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.
Mutable signs signify adjustment and fluctuation so it
promises a satisfactory time of recovery. The time span is usually
in days, weeks or months.

CHAPTER 20

RETROGRADE PLANETS
The term "retrograde" is used when a planet takes on an
apparent backward motion as viewed from the earth. In the
ephemeris a planet in retrograde motion is indicated by the letter
"R" next to the planet on the day that this backward motion begins.
When the movement of the planet ceases its backward movement
and again resumes its direct forward motion, it is indicted by a
“D” next to the planet on the date that it begins its direct course.
Retrograde planets in the horary chart play a significant
role. If one of the five significators is retrograde the indication is
that the lost article is not in plain sight but is behind, underneath or
squeezed in between something. Of course, a more thorough
search is needed, often times requiring things to be moved around
a lot.
If a significator is near a house cusp and is retrograding
back into another house, then the article wil l be moved to a different
location from the one where it was originally lost. If the significators
have, by retrograde motion, just moved into another house, the
article has just been recently moved. If the significator is about to
retrograde into another sign in the same house then the article is
about to be moved, either deliberately or unintentionally. The
new house of the significator, along with the planets in that house
and the location and sign of the ruler of the cusp, all aid in describing
the new location of the missing article. Additional help to discover
the new location or persons involved in the relocation wil 1 be found
Retrograde Planets 69

by looking at any sharp aspects (within 2 degrees) to a planet.

Many things are apparent when the ruler of the Querent is
retrograde. First of all, it indicates that the Querent is quite
disturbed by the disappearance of the object. Second, if there
are no other contrary indications, the article will be found after
much difficulty. Another indication of success after difficulty is
when the Moon’s last aspect is a trine, sextile or conjunction to a
retrograde planet. Retrogrades also indicate that the article will
be damaged or missing something when it is found. If one of the
five significators is retrograde the item may be recovered, but it
may be worn out or in poor condition. For example, if a diamond
pin was lost it may be found with the diamond out of the setting or
perhaps completely missing.
When the ruler of the Querent is retrograde and in square
or opposition to one of the five significators which is also retrograde,
chances of recovery are nil. Recovery also seems impossible if
the Moon’s last aspect is in square or opposition to a retrograde
malefic.

CHAPTER 21

TRANSLATION AND
COLLECTION OF LIGHT
When the Querent’s ruler is separating or unaspected to
one of the significators, the article is generally not found by the
Querent’s personal efforts. If a planet is aspecting both the Querent
and one of the significators we have a condition that is known as
“The Translation or Collection of Light”. This tells us that the lost
item has been picked up by someone and it will be re turned to t he
Querent.
The Collection of Light also suggests that someone else
will be assisting in the search as it denotes a second party is
involved in some way. Check the house and sign involved for a
clear description of the second party.
The Degrees 71

CHAPTER 22

THE DEGREES
The degrees on the Ascendant are very important to the
astrologer when dealing with a horary chart. Generally, old
astrology books will say that if the Ascendant has 3 degrees or
less it is probably too early to read the chart inasmuch as the
whole matter of the missing article has not really had time to
develop. Conversely, if there are 27 degrees or more on the
Ascendant it is probably too late to read the chart. While most
astrologers feel that these types of chart are not valid for reading
because the early and late degrees cause the question to be unfit
to be accurately judged, it is my belief that a chart containing
these degrees on the Ascendant are valid and shouldbz read.
In drawing and reading a horary chart for a lost, mislaid,
or stolen article it is NEVER too early to find out what happened
to the article, however, the degrees of the Ascendant can indicate
whether too much time has passed or if the situation has to develop
more before the article will be located. In other words, the
indications from early or late degrees on the Ascendant are that
the search will be more lengthy or more time will have to elapse
before recovery is made. The late degrees (27 degrees or more)
can help the astrologer make a final decision regarding the lost
item.
Recovery of the article in question will not occur if all
other indications from the chart point to the fact that the article has
been moved or the final aspects do not appear favorable. Then
72 Lose this book... and find it with horary

the astrologer can verify his decision by the late degrees on the
Ascendant. In other words, he would know that too much time
has gone by for the article to be recovered. Reread Chapter 1
for more information about early and late degrees.
End of the Matter 73

CHAPTER 23

END OF THE MATTER

Every possible question asked in horary astrology can be
assigned to a specific house. Each question asked also has a
house denoting the end of the matter for that question. The house
ruling the end of the matter is always the fourth house from the
house ruling the question. It is that fourth house, the cusp of that
house and the planet ruling the cusp that plays the most important
roles in judging the final outcome of the question. The ruler ofthis
house or the planets in that house always hint at either one final
place to look for the missing article or how the search will end. It
will also help settle the issue and determine whether or not the
article will be found and when.
As stated above the house ruling the end of the matter is
always the fourth from the house ruling the question. Therefore,
in questions regarding lost articles, the house for the end of the
matter will always be the fifth house (the fourth from the second),
as long as the chart does not need to be turned.
If the ruler of the Ascendant, the Moon or one of the five
significators is applying a conjunction, trine or sextile to the cusp
of the fifth, ruler of the fifth or any planets in the fifth, then there is
a clear cut promise of recovery.
If the ruler of the Ascendant, Moon or one of the five
significators is applying a square or opposition to the cusp of the
fifth, ruler of the fifth or any planets in the fifth, there is ample
evidence that the article will not be found unless other indications
74 Lose this book... and find it with horary

strongly affect matters to cancel out these aspects.

If the Moon’s first aspect is a trine, sextile or conjunction
to the fifth house cusp, ruler of the fifth or planets in the fifth, a
faster recovery of the article is promised. However, if the Moon’s
first aspect is an opposition or square to these or if a malefic is
situated in the fifth house prepare yourself for a long search, even
if all the other indications promise fast recovery. Even if recovery
is not promised in the chart, the above aspects will still assist the
astrologer in case he decides to suggest calling off the search and
renounce all hope of recovery.
Calculating Direction, Distance & Timing for Recovery 75

CHAPTER 24

CALCULATING DIRECTIONS,
TIMING AND DISTANCE FOR
RECOVERY
Accurately determining the compass direction and timing
in the chart is probably the hardest thing to do in horary. Ms. Ivy
Goldstein-Jacobson used the same timing techniques that many
other astrologers used. The technique was published in the book,
Horary Astrology by Dr. W.J. Simmonite in 1849.

ANGLES SUCEEDENT CADENT

Cardinal Signs Cardinal Signs Cardinal Signs

Recovery in Days Recovery in Weeks Recovery in Months

Mutuable Signs Mutuable Signs Mutuable Signs

Recovery in Weeks Recovery in Months Recovery in Years

Fixed Signs Fixed Signs Fixed Signs

Recovery in Months Recovery in Years Unkiown time

The above chart shows that if the applying ruler is in a

cardinal sign and in a suceedent house, the event would manifest
in weeks. To compute timing you must take the difference
in degrees between the two rulers.
If Jupiter was at 16 Aquarius, Mercury was at 12 Libra
and in the 9th house the timing for the recovery of the article or
whatever would be 4 months. Over my 30+ years of horary work
76 Lose this book... and find it with horary

find that this technique lacks a lot in producing dependable timing.

We know that if the majority of the rulers are in cardinal
signs, the timing will be almost right away, if they are in mutable
signs it will be after a while, and if in fixed signs recovery will take
a long time. This is also true with the house location. If the majority
of the rulers are in angular houses the timing is fast; if in suceedent
the timing is slow and if in cadent the timing is almost halted!
I have found very good results by using the following
technique: take the difference of degrees between the two
major rulers (usually these are the ruler of the Querent and the
ruler of the Quesited). If the difference was 6 degrees this would
mean that the time would be in increments or multiples of 6, such
as, 6 minutes, 6 hours, 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years, 60
years, 600 years, etc. I make my decision of timing based on
whether the chart denotes fast, faster and fastest or slow, slower
or slowest timing using the positions of the house and sign of the
major rulers. If we use the above example, the majority of rulers
are in cardinality and in suceedent houses. My conclusion is that
the event would come to a result in 6 days or 6 weeks. I then
look in the ephemeris around 6 days later and 6 weeks later and
look for major transits that aspect one of the rulers. This is the
method of timing that I have found works best for accurate timing
in the horary.

DIRECTIONS
Using the houses to establish a direction is quite simple
and accurate. Beginning at the Ascendant or the first house, mark
that as East, the IC or the fourth house as North, the descendent
or the seventh house as West, and the M .C. or the tenth house as
South. The inner houses follow around the compass.

Personally, I find that these directions do not always work.

We know that the Ascendant or the first house is not true East.
The anti-vertex is the true compass East. Take a chart and point
the anti-vertex East on a locality map, and then each planet in the
chart would point to the right compass direction. Check the chapter
on Local Space charts.
I have no restrictions in using the house directions but I
feel that the directions of the zodiac signs work better if I use them
in the following way and assigning all Fire signs to East, all Water
signs to North, all Air signs to West, and all Earth signs to South.
When trying to find directions for something that seems to
be inside the home, office or room, I use the ruler’s house position
to direct me to what part of the room of the house the item will be.
I then use the sign that the ruler is in to point to the direction to
search in that room. If the ruler of the second house was in
78 Lose this book... and find it with horary

Capricorn in the eleventh house of the chart 1 delineate the

directions this way: the it em is in a room South by South East and
suggest a search for the item on the south wall of that room.
If I am finding compass directions for something that
appears to be outside the home or far away, I use the following
the technique for direction:
Take the sign on the second house cusp, the sign of the
ruler of the second house, and the house in which the ruler is
situated.
Example: Suppose a chart had the ruler of the second
house in the sign of Taurus and the ruler was placed in the sixth
house, and the sign on the second house cusp was Capricorn.
The sign Taurus is an Earth sign pointing South, the second house
cusp is Capricorn, an earth sign, also pointing South. The sixth
house is West by North West. Now we have a South, South,
West, North and West. The North and the South directions cancel
each other out. We are then left with South, West and West. We
need to sensibly arrange these directions and the only feasible
way is to point West by Southwest. The actual direction for
conducting the search would have to be West by Southwest from
the locality of the Querent when the question was asked. That’s
important!

DISTANCE
The following is the technique used by the previously
mentioned astrologers.
Here’s how this works: Take the difference in degrees
between the ruling planet and the Moon. Observe the latitude of
the ruling planet to give the integer to use as the multiplier for the
difference of the degrees.
Calculating Direction, Distance & Timing for Recovery 79

PLANETS 0 - LAT N - LAT S - LAT

ANGULAR NEARBY 1 MILE 2 MILES

SUCEEDENT 1/2 MILE 2 MILES 3 MILES

CADENT 1 MILE 3 MILES INDEFINITE

Example: The Moon is at 20 Taurus and the ruling planet

at 2 Pisces is in the eighth house at 6 degrees North latitude. The
difference is 18 degrees (the planets do not have to be in aspect).
Using the distance table the multiplier is 2 miles, so the distance
would be 18X2 = 36 miles.
Personally, I feel that this method needs more research.
In finding lost possessions I use the following technique:
Take the difference in degrees between the
Querent and the ruler of the lost object.

Using the following Table to find the value of the multiplier

according to the Moon's sign and house position:

SIGN HOUSE

ANGULAR SUCEEDENT CADENT

CARDINAL 4 3.5 3

MUTUABLE 2.5 2 1.5

FIXED 1 0.5 .25

If the Moon is in a cardinal sign and in an angular house then,

according to the above grid, we multiply the difference in degrees by
4; if the Moon is in a cardinal sign and a mutabl e house, multiply the
difference by 3.5. Now if t he Moon is in a fixed sign and a cadent
house, multiply the difference of degrees between the rulers by .25
(l/4ofthe distance).

CHART 1 EXAMPLE

On December 26, 1976 my daughter, who was living at

home with me, was leaving to go on a short vacation. In the
process of packing she discovered that the two largest suitcases
of her luggage set were missing. Admittedly, it would seem rather
difficult to lose such a large item. Our brief search of the house
turned up nothing. That evening, at 7:18 P.M. EST in Ellington,
Ct., the chart was drawn for the whereabouts of the missing luggage
as seen in Chart Example 1.
Chart Example 1 - Where is my Luggage? 85

Leo on the Ascendant signifies that the Querent (my

daughter) is ruled by the Sun, which is in Capricorn in the fifth
house. Saturn in the first house is the co-ruler of the Querent.
Virgo, on the second house cusp, represents the missing item which
is the luggage itself. Virgo is ruled by Mercury so the article is
also ruled by Mercury.
The first house represents the attitude of the Querent, and
with Saturn retrograde in the first house we can see that she is
very depressed and disturbed about her missing luggage.
Overtones of hopelessness about continuing the search are also
evident by this placement of Saturn. Saturn is trining Neptune in
the fifth house showing that the Querent is clueless and confused
as to the whereabouts of her luggage.
ITie following will demonstrate the step by step procedure
that I used in the search:
The ruler of the second house. Mercury, is in a cadent
house. By following the rules for assigning points to each of the
five major significators (refer to Chapter 7), the second house
ruler, Mercury, carries 4 points which gives a total of 4 points to
the cadent houses. The Moon is in a suceedent house and is
assigned a value of 4. The dispositor of the Part of Fortune and
Venus are both in angular houses giving a value of 3. Cadent and
suceedent houses are the strongest while the angular houses are
the weakest in this instance. Therefore, we can be certain that the
luggage is not in our home. From these tallies the cadent and
suceedent houses hold the highest number of points telling us that
the missing article is outside the home, in a strange neighborhood,
perhaps in another town far away, making the item harder to locate.

Calculating Distance
Our next task is to figure out the distance between the
Querent and the missing item:
The difference between the ruler of the second house.
Mercury, and the Querent’s ruler, the Sun, is 18 degrees. The
Moon is in a mutable sign and in a fixed house. From our rules for
calculating distance the equation will look like this: 18x2 = 36.
86 Lose this book... and find it with horary

The distance of the luggage is 36 miles.

Determining Direction
Now to determine the direction to follow in pursuit of the
suitcase:
By referring to the method of finding directions we need
to look at specific rulers. Mercury, ruling the second house, is in
an Earth sign and the cusp of the second house is also in an Earth
sign. We also need to look at the sixth house because that is where
Mercury actually resides in this chart. On the compass, Earth
signs point South and the sixth house signifies a direction of West
by North West. At this point we have South, South, West, West,
and North. One South cancels out one North and we are left with
West by South West. Our direction to look for the luggage can
be synthesized to read West by Southwest, 36 miles away.

Determining Location
Now for the last part of the search; that is to pinpoint the
exact location of this missing item and here is how it is done:
The last planet that the Moon passed over always points
to the person who last had the article. The house in which the
conjunction w as made and the house that the planet rules describes
the relationship between that person and the Querent.
In this chart example, the Moon’s last conjunction was
over Venus in the seventh house indicating that a partner and/or
close friend may have had the suitcase last. Venus rules the fourth
house, which is also known as the ‘Mislaid house’. This is the
first indication that the Querent might have mislaid the item.
Additionally, the co-ruler of the Querent, Saturn, trines Neptune
so together with the Moon’s last aspect, which is a square to
Neptune, (planet of forgetfulness) and the ruler of the ninth house
of traveling, we see more indications that the article may have
been mislaid or forgotten somewhere. Knowing that the Moon’s
last separating aspect always shows the last action that happened
to the article before it was lost, we see that the Querent seems to
have forgotten her luggage somewhere after her last trip. This
Chart Example 1 - Where is my Luggage? 87

information was valid because I knew that six months ago she and
a girlfriend came back from a vacation in Florida. The Moon is in
a mutable sign and in a suceedent house, with six degrees difference
in longitude from Neptune. We can now see that the luggage was
forgotten somewhere after she returned from that trip.
The Moon’s first applying aspect will make a sextile
(opportunity) to Jupiter, ruling the fifth house, which is the end of
the matter of the lost item. The next aspect that the Moon makes
is a sextile to Mercury, ruler of the lost luggage. The sextile to
Jupiter, as well as the fact that J upiter is in the house of the 'end of
the matter' and the sextile to Mercury, ruler of the lost item, all
assure us that the luggage will be found despite the Moon’s final
square to Mars in the fifth. The first applying aspect that the Moon
makes will always give a clue as to what steps need to be taken or
what action will occur in the recovery process of the item.
As stated above the Moon applies a sextile to Mercury.
Mercury not only rules the lost luggage but also rules the house of
a friend, (fourth from the eleventh). The Moon last passed over
Venus (a young girl) by conj unction in Aquarius (a friend), strongly
hinting that the luggage is very likely in the home of her girlfriend.
My daughter phoned her friend (Part of Fortune in the third house
of communications) who lives about 36 miles West by Southwest
from us and discovered that her luggage had been stored in her
friend’s home since their last trip!

Where is my class ring?

January 21, 1973 1:32 PM TZ 5

CHART 2 - EXAMPLE

My daughter’s Senior class had just received their class

rings and the High School dance was held that Friday night. On
the way home from the dance my daughter’s friend said that she
threw an empty soda can out of the car window. Unfortunately,
her new class ring happened to be much too large for her finger so
the ring went out the window along with the can. My daughter,
her friend, and a number of classmates spent the remainder of that
evening searching for the ring but to no avail.
On Sunday morning, January 21,1973 my daughter asked
Chart Example 2 - Where is my Class Ring? 89

me to help her friend find the ring through horary astrology. 1

explained to her that it would be best if her friend asked me the
question directly to avoid the many necessary turns of the chart. I
always prefer that the question come right from 'the horse's mouth'.
This makes it easier to be certain that I am using the correct houses,
and in horary using the correct houses is a must! At 1.32 P.M.
that day the girlfriend called me with her question, “Where is my
class ring?”
Chart 2 is the horary chart that was drawn for the time
when 1 understood the question from my daughter’s girlfriend’s
phone call to me. The chart has Gemini on the Ascendant ruling
the Querent and Cancer on the second house cusp, ruling the lost
ring, lhe signature of the chart is found by looking at the Moon’s
last previous conjunction. It last passed over the Ascendant
showing that the Querent was the last person to have the ring.
This tells us that the chart is radical, confirming that the Querent
had the article last.
The Moon in the fourth house indicates that the ring is
where the Querent thinks it is (remember, that the Moon carries
double strengt h here in our weighing system because it is acting as
two of the five significators. - the Moon and the second house
ruler). Knowing that the Moon’s last, previous, primary aspect
always tells us something about the lost ar ticle, and seeing that the
Moon was in square to Neptune, 1 personally felt that the can of
soda was really a can of beer, but knowing what my reaction
would be, the girls did not want to confirm that for me!
The chart clearly indicates that the ring would be found
because the Moon’s final aspect is a trine to Mercury, indicating
that the Querent and the lost item would be united. Mercury also
rules the end of the matter, indicated by the fifth house. All of this
verifies that the "end of the matter" would be a happy one.
Generally, a chart will offer different ways of confirming
its statements. This chart also verifies recovery by Saturn’s
(dispositor of the Part of Fortune) trine to Uranus in the fifth house
of end of the matter, Mercury conjunct Fortuna, and the Moon’s
trine to the North Node of connections.
90 Lose this book... and find it with horary

Now to derive the compass directions to follow to search

for the ring. The usual manner of determining the direction was
used. The second house has Cancer on the cusp. Cancer is a
water sign and water signs denote North. The Moon is in Virgo,
an earth sign, indicating South and the Moon is in the fourth house
pointing North.
Now let’s put this all together to make sense. We have a
North, South and North. One South and one North cancel each
other out so we are left with North as our direction to pursue
once we were in the general vicinity of the lost ring. Here I asked
the kids which way they were traveling when the beverage can
was thrown out the window. It was West. The ruler of the third
house, the car, is in the ninth house. This means that they were
traveling West by Southwest.
The Part of Fortune in Capricorn suggests an abandoned
place, open country, a bushy area with large rocks. The Moon in
Virgo in the fourth rules farmland that is wide, open, easy to reach
areas. Saturn, the dispositor of Fortuna in Gemini i n the twelfth, is
another important indicator. Gemini signifies the roadside while
the twelfth house details the location by describing some place
well hidden or hard to find. Saturn retrograde also shows the ring
to be concealed from view requiring patience and diligence if it is
to be found. Earth signs are strong so we can safely say that the
ring is on the ground.
Using these directions the kids began a furtive search.
Two hours went by and still nothing turned up. I decided to join in
the search because the ruler of the Querent, Mercury, and the
Part of Fortune were conjunct Jupiter, ruler of the seventh house
- and the seventh house was me, the advisor, the astrologer.
When the consultant or advisor is favorably aspected it
means that he or she can be of help in the recovery of the item.
Other indications that my first hand help would be positive is shown
by the Moon applying a trine to Jupiter just prior to her final
aspect to Mercury (again, indicating recovery). When I arrived
in the area where the discarded can was still lying, it looked exactly
like the area that has been painted according to the descriptions
Chart Example 2 - Where is my Class Ring ? 91

of the rulerships. I oriented myself, proceeded in aNorth direction,

and about 40 feet ahead was a bushy area that had a couple of
large rocks strewn throughout it. Acting as the ‘armchair general’
I instructed the kids to search that area again. About fifteen minutes
later one of the girls squealed with delight, waving the ring in the
air for her friends to see! She found the ring on the ground, near
the rock, snuggled under some grass and weeds.
If you recall in the Chapter on Directions, Timing and
Distance, the formula for calculation is to take the difference in
degrees between the rulers and then read it in terms of multiples
of the answer. Multiples for liming can be read in minutes, hours,
days, months, years. In terms of distance they can be read in
inches, feet, miles, acres, etc. This chart is a good example for
applying multiples of distance. The equation for calculating distance
is to take the difference in degrees between the Moon and Mercury
which yields 15+ degrees. The Moon is in a mutable sign and in
an angular house so multiply 15 by 3 and we end up with 45. This
could indicate 45 inches, 45 feet, 45 yards, 45 acres, etc. I feel
that this is the best way to handle timing and distances.
Recovery is indicated by various things. The Moon will
make five trines to planets and points in Capricorn in the eighth
house. The Moon is at 9 Virgo and Venus is at 12 Capricorn.
Venus is the first planet that the Moon will trine. Close observation
will show three degrees between the Moon and Venus. The ring
was found three hours after the time that the question was asked.
In a chart with a lot of cardinality or angular houses the
article is usually recovered at the first Moon’s aspect. Quick
recovery is also indicated by the angular Moon and Part of Fortune
and Venus situated in cardinal signs.

Where are my car keys?

May 17, 1973 10:55 AM TZ 4

28T13

CHART 3 EXAMPLE

On May 17, 1973 I received a phone call from a client

who wanted help in locating his car keys. He had been without
his keys for three days, searching continuously but to no avail,
and finally phoned me for help. I took the time of the question
at 10:55 Am EDT after I understood that the keys were truly
lost and that he was the last one to drive his car using his set.
Chart 3 answers the question, “Where are my missing car
keys?”
Chart Example 3 - Where are my Car Keys ? 93

With Leo rising we find the Sun ruling the Ascendant

which is the Querent. Virgo on the second house cusp gives
rulership of the lost keys to Mercury. His wife is ruled by the
seventh house, Aquarius, leading us to Uranus. The end of the
matter is the fourth from the second which is, of course, the
fifth, governed by Jupiter.
Angular houses play a vital role, as you can see, in this
chart. The major significators. Mercury, Moon and Part of
Fortune, are all in angles, indicating that the keys are in his
home. Because the Moon’s last previous conjunction was to
Uranus, it is easy to see that his wife actually had the keys last.
Now let’s unravel the chart and find the missing item.
Mercury in Taurus, intercepted in the tenth house, points South,
inside his house, while the actual sign of Taurus indicates a
South wall. Additionally, Taurus (earth) indicates the ground
level and because it sits in the third decanate the missing keys
would be about two to three feet off the floor. Taurus rules
basements with tile floors, storage rooms and closets. It also
indicates a location with poor or low lighting. The dispositor of
the Part of Fortune in Aquarius indicates a built-in shelf or closet
or room that was added on. Uranus, the dispositor of Fortuna,
is in the sign of Libra pointing to closets, top drawers, a top
shelf and articles of clothing, particularly old ones, as it trines
Saturn. And because Saturn rules the sixth house of work in
this chart the garments could be work clothes.
The ruler of the second house is in the tenth offering
another indication that the lost keys were in his home in a room
such as an office or a room in which business affairs are
conducted. I found out that this type of room does exist in his
home because he is in the insurance business and often brings
work home from his office. Mercury conjuncts the Sun, ruler of
the Ascendant and the Querent, showing that the keys are
somewhere with his personal belongings. The sign of Taurus
again points to articles of clothing. With the Moon in Sagittarius
we are guided to a recreation room, a place where guests are
entertained, or a place for storing college or religious books.
94 Lose this book... and find it with horary

The keys are not in plain sight because Mercury is

intercepted and Uranus, the dispositor of the Part of Fortune, is
retrograde. The item is between something or perhaps inside
something, like a pocket or a cuff. It is easy to assure the client
that the keys will take some effort to find as two of the chart’s
significators are in fixed signs and two are in common. The Part
of Fortune conjuncting Jupiter, the ruler of the fifth house end of
the matter, assures recovery. Recovery is also clearly indicated
by the Mercury/Sun conjunction, the Moon on the cusp of the
fifth house and that three of the five significators are in angles.
The Querent’s wife will be instrumental in finding the
keys due to the activity of the fifth house, which is the end of the
matter. Jupiter rules the fifth and is in the seventh house of the
wife, indicating her participation in the recovery. There are also
other indications to support this. Just look: There is a
conjunction between the fifth and seventh houses as Jupiter
rules the fifth and is in the seventh, and the Moon’s last
conjunction is to Uranus, ruling his wife. Interestingly enough,
the day that my client phoned me he had just had an argument
with his wife and she refused to help him look for his missing
keys!
There is mutual reception between Mercury and Venus.
This makes Venus important as the second house ruler. Venus
has j ust passed an opposition to Neptune indicating that the
keys were mislaid or forgotten somewhere, or that there was
some sort of deception regarding the whereabouts of his keys.
This is reinforced by the Moon’s next aspect which will be a
conjunction to Neptune.
The success of the search is assured by the Moon’s
approaching conjunction to the cusp of the fifth house, applying
a sextile to Jupiter and the Part of Fortune, as well as Jupiter’s
applying conjunction to the Part of Fortune. Note that this
conjunction in the seventh house (also ruling me, the astrologer)
tells us that the advisor, astrologer, would be helpful in locating
the lost article.
When the description of the room, compass directions.

and articles of clothing was given to my client he instantly knew

where to look. It was in the cellar. He recalled having a clothes
closet down there for old, worn out clothes that he used for
those dirty jobs around the house. He told me to hold on the
phone as he scurried downstairs and thrashed through the
basement closet. In a few minutes he returned, jingling the keys
into the phone! They were inside the pocket of his old, leather
jacket! By the way, the clue to the leather is from the Moon’s
final aspect, an opposition to Saturn, the ruler of leather. It was
later confirmed that his wife knew where the keys were but
because she was upset with him she kept the whereabouts of
his keys a secret. (Neptune) Horary does it again!

Where is my truck title?

April 26, 1973 4:40 pm TZ 5
41N46 72W41

CHART EXAMPLE 4

One of my clients decided to sell two of his trucks. To

complete the sal e he needed the title pa pers for both of the vehicles.
He had one, but despite his frugal search, he could not find the
other. On April 26,1973 at 4:40 P.M. EST he phoned me and
asked for assistance. Chart 4 is the horary drawn for his question
as to the where abouts of the missing title. Below is a brief account
of the steps taken to find the missing title.
With Libra on the Ascendant the planet Venus becomes
the ruler of the Querent. Venus is in Taurus in the eighth. Scorpio
Chart Example 4 - Where is my Truck Title? 97

is on the second house cusp so Pluto becomes the ruler of the title
paper. Note that Pluto is retrograde in Libra in the twelfth, showing
that the title is in a place where the client would least expect it.
Neptune is retrograde in the second house indicating that the owner
has probably 'forgotten' where he placed the title of the vehicle.
Of the five significators only the Part of Fortune is in an
angular house while the other four are in suceedent houses. Using
our weighing system this is certainly not enough to indicate that
the title is in either the Querent’s home or his place of business.
Suceedent houses mean that, even though the title is not in the
home or office, it is somewhere and can be recovered. With Pluto
in the twelfth house (cadent), we see that the paper is in a strange
neighborhood, well hidden with some sort of penalty tied to it.
Libra tells us that it is most likely a place related to the arts, beauty,
or money such as a theater, bank, or places that come under the
rulership of Libra. The end of the matter, fifth house, contains the
Moon in Aquarius. Aquarius rules large buildings, such as those
that would house a large corporation. The Part of Fortune in
Cancer in the tenth rules public buildings.
Sometimes when I need additional information about a
question, I use a technique involving the dispositors. I start with
the ruler of the quesit and look at its dispositor, paying close
attention to the house in which it is located. Next, 1 look at the
dispositors of each of the planets pertinent to the question.
In this chart example Pluto’s dispositor is Venus which
rules the eighth house of banking and loans. In looking for the
dispositor of Venus we see that it is Ta urus, and are led right back
to Venus and arrive at a dead end. This, however, does show
how very powerful Venus is in this chart.
The chart shows that the title will be found because the
Moon’s final aspect is a conjunction to Mars in the house of the
end of the matter. Another indication of recovery is that Uranus,
the ruler of end of matter, is in the first house. This shows strong
evidence that the possession is coming back to the Querent,
however, Uranus is retrograde which means that some strings are
attached to it. Mars in the fifth house of the end of the matter,
98 Lose this book... and find it with horary

ruling the seventh house indicates that a connection with another

person would have to be made.
Now let’s determine compass directions and look at the
following points:
The second house cusp is in a water sign pointing North.
Pluto in the air sign, Libra, points West and is located in the twelfth,
which points East by Southeast. Now let's sort the directions.
We have North, West, East, East and South. North and South
cancel out ea ch other. E ast and West cance l out each other leaving
only East.
To determine the distance of the lost t itle take the difference
between the planet Pluto, ruling the second house, and Venus,
ruling the Querent. The difference is 8 + degrees. The Moon is in
a Fixed sign and in a succeedent house so the distance would be
8 + x .5 yielding an answer of 40 +. The answer is a little over a
multiple of 4. Logic tells us that 4 miles away (as opposed to 40
miles in this case) is the most appropriate interpretation for distance.
The paper should be East, about 4 miles away from the
location where the Querent asked the question.
Armed with this information I phoned my client and asked
him where his financing bank was located. He told me that it was
approximately four to five miles East from his office (the location
from which he called to asked me the question). Further scrutiny
of the chart indicates that resolution of this matter would take
place only after he contacts the bank. Venus, his ruler, is in the
eighth house of banks. Look at the house posi tion of the Querent’s
ruler, as it can often be an indication of the primary connection
between the question and the Querent.
After my client called the bank he found out that the title
was being held because he had failed to pay an old late charge on
the loan. Knowing this, the entire matter was immediately cleared
up and my client was able to claim his title.
Chart Example 5 - Where is my Car? 99

Where is my car?

CHART EXAMPLE 5

On August 15,1973, a gentleman telephoned me stating

that his car was missing. I questioned him and he told me that the
car had been i n hi s yard the night before, but that upon awakening
that morning his car was gone. T took his question, “Where is my
car?” at 3:11 P.M. that day. Chart 5 shows the horary drawn for
the missing car.
Sagittarius is on the Ascendant so Jupiter rules the
Querent. Jupiter is retrograde in Aquarius in the second house.
100 Lose this book... and find it with horary

This shows that the Querent is very upset and depressed, if not
heartsick, about the loss of his automobile.
The missing car is ruled by the third house and the third
house is intercepted. The car, therefore, has two rulers which
suggests that there are two parts to the question. Aquarius on the
third house cusp makes Uranus the primary ruler of the car and it
is in the tenth. The sign Pisces is intercepted in the third house
making the planet Neptune the concealed ruler. Neptune is located
in the twelfth house.
Uranus in Libra signifies that the car is quite expensive,
beautiful, one of a kind, and pastel in color. The Querent verified
this for me as he told me that the car was a ‘baby blue Cadillac’
and his prize possession. This gave me the signature of the chart
and verified the chart to be radical. I always look for a sign in the
chart that describes something important about the item. 1 call this
the Signature of the chart and in this example it is clearly indicated
by Uranus in Libra describing the one-of-a-kind car in baby blue
paint. A signature is very useful because it shows that the chart
truly fits the question.
In looking at the five significators we see that two are in
angular houses. The ruler of the second house is in the tenth, and
the Part of Fortune is in the seventh house totaling a weight of 7
points. The Moon, the dispositor of the Part of Fortune, the co
ruler of the car, Neptune, and Venus arc all in cadent houses,
adding up to a value of 11. With cadent houses having the highest
number of points we can definitely say that the car is not on his
property but further away. The Moon is intercepted in the third
house in the sign of Pisces suggesting that the car is in a far away,
abandoned place by the water. This is also verified by the third
house co-ruler, Neptune, retrograde in the twelfth house. Saturn
and the Part of Fortune are both in Cancer which further
corroborates that the car is near water. Uranus in Libra indicates
a barren place, perhaps, a gravel pit.
The rules for mislaid articles do not apply to this chart
because it is apparent that the car was taken or stolen by someone
else. The house ofthieves is the seventh house. The ruler of the
Chart Example 5 - Where is my Car? 101

seventh house, Mercury, has passed an opposition to Jupiter in

the second house, so it is apparent that the car was stolen. It
appears likely that more than one thief was involved because there
are three heavenly points in the seventh house (Part of Fortune,
South Node and Saturn), and the sign on the cusp is Gemini.
Both Saturn and the Part of Fortune square the planet Venus,
ruler of his sixth house. In addition to Gemini being on the cusp
this could also suggest that there were just two thieves and not
three, regardless of those three bodies in the seventh house. The
square to Venus is a good indication that the car was taken by an
employee or co-worker of the owner. Mercury, ruling the thieves,
trines the Ascendant, implying that he might know the Querent.
Now, let’s describe the thieves. Mercury, ruling the seventh
house, is in Leo describing a young man who is the probably the
ring leader. He could possibly be a "show-off or braggart,"
believing himself to be grander than he is, as seen by Mercury’s
trine to Neptune in Sagittarius in the twelfth. The accomplice,
ruled by Saturn, is probably an older person.
Saturn makes a tight square to Pluto, ruler of the Querent’s
twelfth house and a conjunction to the South Node, so this theft
could be a vindictive act from a secret enemy. The motive for the
theft could have been to inflict an emotional injury on the Querent
because of all the twelfth house involved. Mercury rules both the
seventh and the intercepted ninth houses, indicating that the thieves
could be brothers (the third from the third which is two brothers).
The question of recovery of the car is now posed. Will it
be recovered? The Ascendant is applying atrine to Uranus, ruler
of the car, and the car’s co-ruler, Neptune, conjuncts the
Ascendant. The planet Neptune trines the end of matter, Venus.
Keep in mind that in this chart we are using the third house for the
missing automobile so the end of the matter will be ruled by the
sixth house, Taurus on the cusp, hence Venus as the ruling planet.
The Moon’s next and final aspect is an opposition to Venus,
signifying that his next step is to call the police. Tire police is ruled
by the sixth house which again is ruled by Venus. The fact that
there is a retrograde planet in the second house, also the car’s co-
102 Lose this book... and find it with horary

ruler, states that something will be missing from the car.

To find the compass directions we have to remember that
Aquarius is on the third house cusp and Air signs point West.
Uranus, the third house ruler, is in an Air sign and again indicates
West. It is also in the tenth house which points South. If we put
them together we have West, West and South. We know to look
for the car West by Southwest from the location where the Querent
asked the question.
The car should be found within a reasonable amount of
time because Uranus is in a cardinal sign and in an angular house.
The Moon is mutable in a cadent house, the Part of Fortune is
cardinal in an angular house, and the dispositor of the Part of
Fortune is mutable in a cadent house. All this shows a recovery
that could take only a matter of a few days.
But let’s narrow this down to be more specific. The ruler
of the Ascendant, Jupiter, is applying a sextile to Uranus within
14 degrees so we can say that the car will be found within 14
days. There are two rulers for the car (Uranus and Neptune) and
both need careful analysis. The end of matter, Venus, is applying a
trine to Neptune by 8 degrees. The Ascendant is making an
applying trine to Venus by 6 degrees. This would indicate 6 to 8
days for recovery. It’s very important to get the proper timing
when t here are two rulers. Another "docker" is the applying sextile
made by the Ascendant to Uranus by 9 degrees. We could assume
that the car will be found within 6 to 14 days and more specifically
within 6 to 9 days.
To determine the actual distance of the car from the
Querent’s home, take the difference between the rulers: Uranus
(for the car) and Jupiter (the Querent ruler). We have a difference
of 11. The Moon is in the a mutable sign located in a cadent
house. According to the rules in the Table for Calculating Distance
multiply 14 by 1.5 and get a distance of 16.5 miles away.
The car was found 8 days after the question was asked at
a distance of just under 20 miles away from the Querent’s home.
The car was not damaged, but the radio, speakers and tape deck
were ripped out. This action is tell tale from Jupiter retrograde in
Chart Example 5 - Where is my Car? 103

the second house in Aquarius ruling electronic equipment and in

square to the Ascendant, which signifies the Querent.
The insurance company did not pay for any of the damages
to the car because the Querent did not lock the automobile. The
Querent’s ruler is retrograde in the second house, the Moon’s last
aspect is an opposition to Venus in the ninth house of insurance,
and the Moon rules the eighth house of losses and money from
other sources.
Just as a P.S., it was later discovered that one of the thieves
was the Querent's employee as described by the planet Saturn.

explained that the dog belonged to her step-daughter but she was
taking care of him for the past year because the step-daughter
moved into an apartment where pets were not allowed. In that
year’s time Butch had never strayed out of the boundaries of her
yard. The last time that Butch was seen was on August 27th at
about 2:50 P.M.
When I fully understood all the circumstances I checked
the time and proceeded to draw Chart 6. The dog belongs to the
step-daughter who is ruled by the eleventh house and the dog, her
pet, is the sixth from the eleventh, which is the radical fourth house.
In this instance the dog is owned by someone else and not by the
Querent. Because the question was asked by the stepmother,
however, it is she who becomes the Querent and all directions
and timings will have to be calculated according to her locality.
The pet’s ruler is Jupiter, located in the radical ninth house
in the sign of Gemini, which is the sixth house of the dog. Jupiter
is in early degrees in the sign indicating that the dog’s situation has
just taken on a new dimension. The Moon last passed over the
North Node in the second house. This would indicate some sort
of accident. The Moon has just entered the third house, the dog's
twelfth house, indicating that something just happened. As it is the
twelfth house it could mea n the "self-undoing" of the dog. The last
aspect that the Moon made was a square to Saturn in the eleventh
house, the eighth house of the dog. All of these negative aspects
are unfavorable for the dog.
Mercury rules the Querent (stepmother) because it rules
the Ascendant. Mercury is in the first house conjunct Mars and
Pluto. This paints a picture of the Querent herself. From this
delineation she appears somewhat nervous, actively participating
in this matter and a lit tle beset with guilt as seen by the Ascendant
square Neptune in the third (mental house) and square to Pluto,
and the ruler of her third conjunct her own ruler. The step-daughter
is ruled by the Moon and her co-ruler is Saturn. She is more
emotional about the s ituation and shows some hurt and depression.
She believes that Butch was stolen because Saturn is first trining
Neptune, ruler of the seventh. But if the dog was stolen the 7th
106 Lose this book... and find it with horary

house ruler, Neptune, would have to make hard aspects to the

ruler of the dog, Jupiter or the Moon. The opposition between
Jupiter and Neptune is too wide in orb. I use a 10 degree orb in
my work. So we can say with certainty that the dog was not
stolen. Jupiter, Butch, verifies that the dog is a pedigree and as it is
in Gemini, shows that the woman has papers for it.
Both the Moon and Uranus are Via Combust so the worst
can be expected in this matter.
Jupiter in Gemini rules barren ground, rhe Moon and the
Part of Fortune in the sign of Scorpio points to a swampy area or
stagnant pool. 1 spoke to the Querent again and learned that she
had a built in swimming pool in her back yard.
To determine compass directions we look at the fourth
house cusp, a fire sign, which is East; Jupiter in an air sign which is
West, and in the ninth house pointing South by South West; the
second house cusp, a cardinal sign, points West. The compass
directions are East, West, South, West, and South. East and West
cancel out each other and we are left to follow South by South
West. The swimming pool is on the southern section of the
Querent’s property.
The end of the matter is the seventh house which is ruled
by Neptune. Remember, for the end of the matter, we read the
fourth house from the house of the inquiry. The seventh is the
fourth from the fourth, which is Butch.
Many indicators lead us to believe that Butch may have
met with a fatal accident. First of all, Neptune (the end of the
matter) is found in the dog’s twelfth. The Moon’s previous
conjunction passed over the North Node in Scorpio, the sign of
death and the dog’s house of death has Saturn inhabiting it. Saturn
is the planet of death. And finally, the l ast previous as pect that the
Moon made was a square to Saturn.
Because the theme of death seems imminent in this chart
it will be in our favor to look at the Arabic Part of Death.

The Part of Death is calculated with this formula:

Ascendant + the Eighth house cusp - Moon.
Chart Example 6 - Where is Butch ? 107

In this instance the formula reads:

The fourth cusp + eleventh house cusp - the Moon = the Part of
Death (We ha ve to use the fourth from the Ascendant for the
dog and the eleventh becomes the eighth house of the dog.) The
Part of Death equals 2 degrees of Virgo squaring the dog’s ruler,
Jupiter.
By the way, our Millennium Star Trax software by Alphee's
Air Software automatically calculates and includes any Arabic Part
that you want in the chart.
The indications are so strong and obvious that we can say
without a doubt that Butch is dead.
I phoned my cl ient to break the news to her that it appeared
Butch had fallen into the pool and drowned. She called me back
later that evening to say that neither she or her husband could find
the dog anywhere in the pool. I then explained that I did not feel
that the dog would be visible atleast until the Moon crossed the
fourth house cusp which would be around the first two days of
September. Additionally, Mercury and the ruler of the Ascendant
(Querent) are in cardinal signs and are three degrees away from
trining Jupiter, the ruler of the dog. The planet N eptune, ruling her
husband, shows that he would be the first one to find evidence of
the dog’s demise. (Neptune is conjunct the dog’s Ascendant, the
fourth house cusp). On the morning of September 2nd my client
phoned me to say that her husband found the dog’s body floating
in the pool. The dog was found within minutes of the time that the
transiting Moon conjuncted the cusp of the fourth house cusp!

Where is my wallet?
December 13,1975 1:30 PM TZ5

CHART EXAMPLE 7

It was a quiet, snowy Saturday afternoon in December

when I received a call from a client asking for help to find his
wallet that was lost the night before. My client stated that he
knew for certain that he had the wallet when he left work on
Friday because he stopped at the bank to deposit his paycheck.
It was on Saturday morning that he realized his wallet was missing
and began a frantic search for it. At 1:30 P.M. Est December 13,
1975 he phoned me with his question, "Where is my wallet?"
Chart Example 7 - Where is my Wallet? 109

Without turning the chart we see that the Ascendant rules

the Querent. In this chart Aries is on the Ascendant so Mars is the
ruler of the Querent. Taurus is intercepted in the first house, making
Venus the co-ruler of the Querent. Mars is in Gemini in the third
indicating that the Querent is quite hasty when handling his wallet,
and it appears that he neglected to tell me all of his whereabouts
the previous night. Retrograde Mars indicates that he does not
pay too much attention to details in explaining his actions. This is
supported by Venus, co-ruler of the client, intercepted in Scorpio,
conjunct Uranus, and in close square to retrograde Saturn.
The wallet is ruled by the second house cusp in Gemini
with Mercury being the ruler. The Moon, Part of Fortune,
dispositor of the Part of Fortune, and ruler of the second house
are not in angles. Although Venus is in an angular house it is not
enough to prove that the lost wallet is at home. The cadent house
is strongest in our weighing method with a value of 10. Mercury is
in the ninth and just about ready to move into another sign, so we
can safely assume that the wallet changed hands or that someone
(a stranger-ninth house) has picked it up. Mercury sextiles Uranus
and Venus in the seventh house and Uranus rules the eleventh
house of friends. From this we can surmise that whomever picked
up the wallet was a friend (Uranus) and/or a female as seen by
Venus, ruling the seventh. The Moon’s last past conjunction was
to the ninth house ruler, Jupiter, indicating strangers, family relations
such as in-laws, or someone with whom the Querent was not
close. With the Moon in the twelfth house applying a conjunction
to the Ascendant and its last aspect trine to Mercury, the second
house ruler, there are strong indications that the Querent will recover
his missing wallet.
There are equally strong aspects to suggest that the wallet
was not actually lost but only mislaid. Supporting evidence is
retrograde Mars, the Querent’s ruler, in the second house. Also,
there is mutual reception between Venus and Pluto. To read the
mutual reception we must read Venus in her own sign of Libra
using the degrees of Pluto. This shows a past sextile to Neptune
which is another supporting aspect that his wallet is mislaid and
110 Lose this book... and find it with horary

not stolen. Tliis sextile is also an indication of a favorable outcome

and that he will regain his lost article.
There is other evidence that the wallet was not stolen.
The ruler of the wallet, Mercury, sextiles Venus, the ruler of the
seventh house of thieves. Both the seventh house rulers (Venus
and Pluto) are in mutual aspect which is a good sign that the wallet
is still in tact. Mutual aspects give strong evidence that some
‘savior’ came to the rescue. The mutual aspect is between the
Querent’s ruler and the seventh house ruler, representing another
person who is "saving the day!"
To see if the wallet can be recovered we have to observe
the fifth house ruler and any planets in the fifth. The Sun is trining
the Ascendant, Mercury trines the Part of Fortune in the fifth house
while Venus, the co-ruler, and Mars both sextile it. When the
Moon hovers around the Ascendant it is almost a sure shot that
the item will be recovered.
Mercury in the ninth shows that the lost wallet could be in
a place such as a college, church, or banquet hall. Mercury trine
the Moon also points to a public place. The Part of Fortune in the
fifth also points to the article being in a place of fun, play, or
amusement. The Moon in the twelfth refers to a hospital, jail or a
secluded place.
Looking for directions we see an air sign on the second
house cusp which points West, Mercury in a fire sign pointing
East, and in the ninth house indicating South by Southwest. After
our deduction we are left with South by Southwest.
The distance could be calculated as the difference between
Mars and Mercury which is 6 degrees. The Moon is in a cardinal
sign in the cadent twelfth house. Following the rules the next step
is to multiply 6 by 2.5 and get 15 miles away in a South by
Southwest direction.
As 1 looked at the chart and saw the Moon in a cardinal
sign, I assured my client not to worry as recovery would take
place very soon. This was apparent by the applying trine between
Moon and Mercury. I surmised that someone was holding it for
him. After explaining all of the possible places and directions in
Chart Example 7 - Where is my Wallet? Ill

which the wallet could be, he revealed to me that he was at a local

college playing bridge on the night that he must have lost his wallet.
The college was not found among our calculated compass
directions that the horary had indicated, but the Querent phoned
the janitor at the college anyway just to check and be sure. The
janitor told him that he did not find a wallet.
Now my client thoughtfully recounted all of his actions
that night and then told me that he made a short stop for a quick
drink at a local tavern on his way to the bridge game. I eagerly
pumped him to tell me where the tavern was by compass directions.
The tavern perfectly fit the described directions and distance
indicated by the horary chart! He quickly went in search of his
wallet at the tavern and, to his delight, discovered that the female
bartender was holding it for him!! In his haste of ini tially telling me
about his lost wallet he had forgotten that he stopped at the tavern
and left his wallet on the bar! The Moon in the twelfth rules bars
and taverns or places where you can get intoxicated.

What Happen to my purse?

March 10, 1993 4:45 PM TZ6
38N53 77W01

CHARTEXAMPLE 8

In March of 1993, my wife, Carol, and I were flying home

from Mexico where I had given a few workshops to the local
NCGR group. We arrived at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C.
where we needed to switch planes to come home to Connecticut.
We were rushing to make our connecting flight. I placed my laptop
computer onto the security conveyor belt and Carol put a small
package and her pocketbook on there, too. The person in front
of us seemed like he was having a lot of problems trying to go
Chart Example 8 - What Happened to my Purse? 113

through the metal detector. The buzzers were ringing each time
he passed through as if he were made of metal. After a few
unsuccessful tries the security attendants finally pulled him aside.
Next it was our turn to go through the gate. 1 had no
problem. But Carol was given so many lovely gifts ofjewelry
from our newly-made Mexican friends, and the metal detectors
went off again like crazy. After taking off all the jewelry and the
zip-in lining of her raincoat, we reached the other side of the gate
only to find that her purse was missing from the conveyor belt!
Unfortunately, trying to deal with the security guards and the police
was a lost cause. Time to catch our connecting flight home was
quickly running out so we decided to go home and deal with things
from there. Upset and anxious we went off to catch our flight.
Despite all the commotion Carol had managed to get a clock time
for this incident.
When we arrived home we drew the chart for the time
using Washington, D.C. coordinates. Chart # 8 is the chart for the
question Carol asked, “What happened to my purse?”
Mercury rules the Ascendant, so it rules Carol. The sign
and the aspects of Mercury describe the way that she felt about
the situation. Mercury is retrograde and in the sign of Pisces which
rules confusion and dejection. It is in opposition to the Ascendant
showing her loss of trust for her fellow man. This is reinforced by
Mercury conjunct the Sun, ruler of her twelfth house.
Now let’s look at the second house and it's ruler to tell us
what happened and what will happen from here. The second
house is ruled by the planet Venus in the sign of Aries situated in
the eighth house and retrograde. With a retrograde ruler of the
second house if there is a chance of getting the purse back
something will be missing from it. There are two planets in the
second house; a void of course Moon and a retrograde Jupiter.
This tells us that the chances of getting back the money that she
had in her purse is very slim. Jupiter shows that a fair amount of
money was in the pocketbook, but not our life savings. In referring
to the five significators only Mars is angular. Mars is given a
weight of 2 points as we refer to the point scale for the significators.
114 Lose this book... and find it with horary

It receives those 2 points because it is the dispositor of the Part of

Fortune.
In this chart major weight is given to t he suceedent houses.
Was the pocketbook stolen? Did someone take it? Yes, the ruler
of the second house is making an almost exact square (applying)
to Neptune, the ruler of the theft (seventh house). Notice that
there are 2 planets in the seventh house of theft, they are the Sun
and a retrograde Mercury. Mars, ruler of the eighth house,
represents the stolen money and applies a trine to the Sun in the
house of theft. It could indicate that there were two people involved;
in this case a young person ruled Mercury (either gender, that’s
Mercury’s duplicity) and a middle aged man, signified by the Sun.
Will the pocketbook be found and returned? Yes, the
ruler of the pocketbook is Venus which is making an applying
sextile to Saturn, the ruler of the end of the matter (fifth house),
and also conjunct the Part of Fortune. Venus is also applying
squares to Neptune and Uranus in the fifth house. This shows an
unusual or unpredictable and disappointing outcome. As in all
horary charts, the fourth house from any house will show how the
entire matter will turn out.
We arrived home in Connecticut around 7:30 P.M. and at
8:05 P.M. received a phone call from a security man in Dulles
Airport. The story he told us was that a businessman (the one
ahead of us in line) had picked up his garment bag from the conveyer
belt and somehow Carol’s pocketbook got tangled in the hangers.
When he noticed the purse dangling from the bag he brought it
back to security. According to the security guard everything was
in the pocket book, including the money. He said that he would
now have to report the purse found and pass it over to another
party who would package it and ship it to the airline terminal in
Hartford. He also informed us that he could not guarantee that
everything would be in tact when we received the pocket book
and that United Airlines would not be responsible for it contents.
This caller is ruled by the third house with Scorpio on the
cusp so we have to consider the planet Pluto. With Saturn as
ruler of the end of the matter, making an applying aspect to Pluto
Chart Example 8 - What Happened to my Purse ? 115

and both planets in the fifth, we know that this call will have to do
with how things will end. Both of the planets in the seventh house,
the house ruling the theft, trining Pluto, ties him with something. A
few days later Carol and I drove to Bradley airport to pick up her
pocketbook. It came in a well sealed package. When we opened
the package everything appeared to be there - her credit cards,
license, notes, I.D., etc. All was there except the CASH. All of it
was gone. The planet Jupiter situated in the second house squares
both of the planets in the fifth house.
Let’s do a little analyzing. When the security guard called
he said that all the money was there. In fact, he told Carol the
exact amount, including the change. I don’t think he took the
money. Why? Pluto, his ruler, received applying squares from
Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and a trine from the Sun and Mercury
in the house ruling theft. The seventh house rules his fifth house of
pride and honesty. Another good indication is that Jupiter rules
the house of money and it is forming an applying square to Neptune,
the ruler of the theft. If the aspect was a trine then it would indicate
that he is enjoying the cash he found in Carol’s wallet.
Then WHO took the money? We know that the caller
had the pocketbook with the money in it. Let’s go back to the
seventh house and that should tell us who was the culprit. The Sun
is a strong aspect. Now let’s tie the Sun with the caller. The Sun
rules the twelfth house, the tenth from the third. The tenth house is
the boss, superior or the head officer. That’s where the money
disappeared. Mercury conjuncts the Sun, and Mercury, ruling the
second house from the twelfth, shows the boss or someone in the
head office taking the money. A conjunction means coming
together. Another strong indication is that the Sun makes an
applying aspect to both planets in the house indicating the end of
the money, end of the matter.

Where is Thumbkin?
September3, 1993 6:34 PM TZ4

CHART EXAMPLE 9
LOCAL SPACE IN HORARY

Carol and I are animal lovers. We have all kinds of pets in

the house. One of my most favorite pets is our female ferret,
Thumbelina, also nicknamed ‘Thumbkin’ and ‘Trouble’. Of
course, she has complete run of the house and has nibbled many
a toe of some of the most prestigious astrologers who we are
grateful to have had as our house guests! Many times, too, she
has kept clients standing on the chairs in the office!
Chart Example 9 - Local Space in Horary 117

Ferrets are very active animals and when they play, they
play hard; but when they crash and sleep they get into the tiniest
little nook that you could imagine and go to sleep for hours. This
could be in any room, a closet, a desk drawer, under a chair, in a
sock, in a briefcase, inside my computer case - if there’s an opening
somewhere she’ll find it! And ferrets are creative in choosing
different spots to sleep in each time. So our nightly routine is to
see who can find Thumbelina the fastest and put her in the kitchen
for the night so none of us are disturbed by her nightly antics of
toe nibbling.
Thumbelina is trained to respond to our clapping our hands
and calling her name. Most of the time she will poke her little
head out from under who knows what and playfully run over to
us. But some nights we have absolutely no luck as to her brand
new hiding place! That’s when we have to go to the computer
and calculate a horary chart for the moment asking, “Where is
Thumbelina?”
A method that I’ve discovered that works remarkably
well for locating missing things is the use of the Local Space chart.
Our usual procedure is to first look at the regular chart to see
which planet rules the sixth house, which indicates Thumbelina.
Next, we print a local space chart and march ourselves to the X
on the floor that marks the middle of the house and place the chart
on the X. Make sure that the East point of the chart faces the
compass direction of due East. Carol and I then check to see in
which direction the sixth house is pointing. Ninety nine times out
of a hundred it points to exactly where Thumbelina is all curled up
and sleeping. I’ve come to discover that if the planet ruling
Thumbelina points North by Northeast we have to look both ways
from the X and follow the North by Northeast direction and also
extend the line in the opposite direction to search South by
Southwest. It is on whatever that diagonal line lay that we have
always found her.
118 Lose this book... and find it with horary

In Example Chart 9, "Where is Thumbkin?" she is ruled by the

sixth house and therefore, ruled by the Moon. In the local space
chart above, the Moon indicates that Thumbelina is in the North
by North East direction from the X in the middle of the floor of
our home.
To work with this method you don’t actually have to draw

a local space chart.

Remember, the anti
vertex is true East on
the compass. So
simply take the regular horary chart and point the anti-vertex to
due East. Now locate the direction of the second house ruler if
you are looking for a lost possession, the sixth house ruler for a
pet, or the 12th house ruler if you lost your elephant!
I also use this technique for my other horary work. It
works very well to give compass directions and point to a bank
for a loan (8th house), finding an apartment in which to live(4th
house), or a place to find work (10th house). You can locate
people, things or places with this method. I use the exact time of
the horary. If someone asks a question “ where can I find a decent
car?”, 1 draw the chart and point to the third house ruler to find
the direction. I then take the ruler of the third house and subtract
its degrees from the degrees of the ruler of the Ascendant (I subtract
the smaller from the larger). Let’s say that the difference is 5
degrees. This indicates to search for a car in the direction of the
Chart Example 9 - Local Space in Horary 119

third house ruler 5,50 or 500 hundred miles away. Remember,

the distance is in multiples of five. This could also mean 5 inches,
5 feet, 5 yards, or 5 miles.
In getting back to using local space to locate lost objects, 1 find
that the latitude of the ruler of the second house tells the vertical
position of the object. If the latitude is below the horizon or negative
in value the object is close to the floor or in the cellar. If the latitude
is above the horizon the object is higher. The higher the latitude
the higher the object will be. If the latitude is above 10 degrees it
means that the object could be on the second floor of the house.
In June of 1993 the street which we live on was
experiencing a lot of weird activity. On the day of the new Moon
the S. W. A.T. Team invaded our normally quiet street with rifles
and dogs, searching every house for a man who had just had a
shoot-out with the police. The assailant was shot (not fatally) in a
garage across the street to our house. The following two evenings
we had fire trucks attending to fire s at two of houses on the street.
The rest of the week there were accidents, ambulances and more
police cars, sirens and lights responding to emergency calls of
fires, violence and medical emergencies for residents on the street.
I could ignore one incident but all of them happening in
just a few days piqued my interest. Being an astrologer I began to
wonder just what could be going on to cause all of this commotion.
Having done an astrology radio show with Carol for over 16 years
offering weekly mundane chart work and predictions, 1 decided
to take a serious look at some charts. The first one 1 calculated
was the New Moon for my city of West Hartford, CT. I found
the planet Uranus was exactly on the Ascendant of the chart. That
in itself shows a lot of restless energy for West Hartford. The
question was “why Caya Avenue?" which is the street on which
we live.
The only technique that I knew that would tie events
together was using Geodetic methods and Local space. Geodetic
is remarkably accurate to pinpoint localities but not something as
precise as a street in a city. So I took the street map of West
Hartford, enlarged it on my copier, and placed a local space chart
120 Lose this book... and find it with horary

over City Hall on the map making sure that North on the local
space chart matched North on the map. And, guess what? The
lines of Uranus and the Ascendant went exactly down Caya Avenue!
I learned a few things from this investigation. The activities
lasted for only one week. Many astrologers question the duration
of the new energies. In the past I conducted extensive research in
weather, offering predictions on the local radio show. Through
my research on weather forecasting, I realized that the new Moon
energies only last until the next quarter of the Moon. This reinforced
the power of local space. This incident made me launch this
investigation on how to apply local space to my horary work and
I am glad that I could share my findings with you.
