Engineering Ceramics
Tutorial -4

1) Support or contradict the following with proper reasoning.

a. Ceramics are easily deformable.
b. Ceramics are normally tested in tension.

2) A ceramic component contains internal flaws as large as 0.001 cm in length. The plane strain fracture toughness
of the component is 4.5 MPam 1/2 and the tensile strength is 660 MPa. Comment whether the flaw causes the
component to fail before the tensile strength is reached.

3) A ceramic part for a jet engine has an yield strength of 75,000 psi and a plane strain fracture toughness of 5,000
psi in. To be sure that the part does not fail, we plan to assure that the maximum applied stress is only one third
the yield strength. We use a nondestructive test that will detect any internal flaws greater than 0.05 in. long.
Assuming that Y= 1.4, does our nondestructive test have the required sensitivity? Explain.

4) A square impression with average diagonal length of 300 μm is found on a polished surface of a sample after
Vickers indentation at 20 kg load for 15 sec. Determine the Vickers hardness (in Pa).

5) A reaction bonded silicon nitride ceramic has strength of 300 MPa and a fracture toughness of 3.6 MPa.m 1/2. What
is the largest-size internal crack that this material can support without fracturing? Use Y =1 in the fracture
toughness equation. (91.6 µm)

6) A fully stabilized cubic polycrystalline zirconia sample has a fracture toughness of 3.8 MPa m 1/2 when tested on a
four-point bend test.
a. If the sample fails at a stress of 450 MPa, what is the size of the largest surface flaw? Assume Y = √π
b. The same test is performed with a partially stabilized zirconia specimen. This material is transformation-
toughened and a has a fracture toughness of 12.5 MPa m 1/2. If this material has the same flaw distribution
as the fully stabilized sample, what stress must be applied to cause failure?

7) The flexural strength of a ceramic material is 45,000 psi and the flexural modulus is 18 ´ 106 psi. A sample, which
is 0.5 in. wide, 0.375 in. high, and 8 in. long, is supported between two rods 5 in. apart. Determine the force
required to fracture the material.

8) A 3-point bending test is performed on Al 2O3 with a circular cross-section of radius 3.5 mm. The specimen
fractures at a load of 950 N when the support points are 50 mm apart. Consider a square sample of the same
material with a square cross-section of 12 mm on each edge. If the support points are 40 mm apart, at what load
will the sample fracture?

9) The elastic modulus (E) value of the fully dense (theoretical density 6.01 g/cc) zirconia ceramic is 215
GPa. Estimate the elastic modulus value of a sintered zirconia specimen with a final density of 5.89 g/cc.
Given the relationship between E and P (porosity) is:
E = E0 (1-A * P+ B * P2)
where the value of the constats A & B are 1.9 and 0.9 respectively.
