Let’s Recall

How to round a decimal in different conditions.

● Rounding off to the nearest whole number means, rounding off to the nearest
whole number. For example; 76.2467 = 76 (to the nearest whole number)

● Rounding off to the nearest tenths means, rounding off correct to 1 decimal place.
For example; 76.2467 = 76.2 (to the nearest tenths)

● Rounding off to the nearest hundredths means, rounding off correct to 2 decimal
places. For example; 76.2467 = 76.25 (to the nearest hundredths)

● Rounding off to the nearest thousandths means, rounding off correct to 3 decimal
places. For example; 76.2467 = 76.247 (to the nearest thousandths)

Rules for Rounding off to the nearest 10:


Rule I. While rounding off to the nearest ten if the digit in the units place is between 0
– 4 i.e., < 5 then the unit digit is replaced by 0.
Rule II. If the digit in the units place is 5 to 9 i.e., > or 5 but < 10, then the units place
is replaced by ‘0’ and the tens place increased by 1.

Rules for Rounding off to the nearest 100:


Rule I: While rounding off to the nearest hundred, if the digit in the tens place is
between 0 – 4 i.e. < 5, then the tens place is replaced by ‘0’.
Rule II: If the digit in the units place is equal to or >5, then the tens place is replaced
by ‘0’ and the hundreds place is increased by 1.

Rules for Rounding off to the nearest 1000:


Rule I: While rounding off to the nearest thousand, if the digit in the hundreds place is
between 0 – 4 i.e., < 5, then the hundreds place is replaced by ‘0’.
Rule II: If the digit in the hundreds place is = to or > 5, then the hundreds place is
replaced by ‘0’ and the thousands place is increased by 1.
