1.1 Unpacking
If you are reading this manual then you have evidently begun to unpack the transport container. Continue with care
to prevent any damage to the treated surface or damage to parts which are sensitive to shocks and vibrations.
After unpacking, check that the delivery is complete. The list of ordered and delivered components for the control
unit is contained in this manual; the production sheet contains the names of all components, the code indication
and the serial numbers.
Shipping box is made to ideally protect our product during transportation from production to you. Therefore, it is
recommended to be used when further transporting the RTU unit. If you are not able to store the shipping box for
the whole service life of the unit, which would be the ideal status, then do not liquidate the box for at least a few
days following the first operation of the control unit.

1.2 Safety instructions

Before the first connecting the RTU unit, please pay close attention to the following notifications:
Our control unit is a device supplied by DC voltage or AC voltage within a wide range of voltage. Although we pay
heed to a safety of our products and each product is tested, please observe the similar principles like in case
of other electric appliances.
This unit must be connected to an electrical circuit, which voltage corresponds to a unit's name plate. A power
supply source of the unit must be the SELV one.
The unit is designed to be installed into a switchboard, switchboard box, and a rack box, which are accessible
to a service staff only. Installation of this unit must be performed by the service staff only. This unit is used to be
permanently connected to power supply voltage. Some easily accessible disconnecting device must co-operate
with the unit. The device is intended for use in industrial environments.

2 Technical documentation

2.1 Description of RTU7C unit

The RTU7C unit is a modern integrated tool for remote monitoring of energy objects; in particular distribution
substations or renewable energy sources. It is derived from the well established series of RTU units from ELVAC
a.s. which have been successfully implemented for many years in applications for the control and monitoring of
energy networks, as well as in other areas with high demands on the reliability and robust character of systems.
RTU7C unit offers a suitable solution for applications, where it is necessary to read the state of the four digital
inputs and control up to four digital outputs. Communications options of the RTU7C units are identical to the
communication options of the RTU7.4K/KL units which are equipped with COMIO4 card. RTU7C unit can be used
as simple data concentrator. Because of using a various of protocols it can be connected many external devices to
the unit (like protections, sensors…). If the RTU7C unit is equipped with the GPS module, it can operate as a time
server or it can be used as a timing tester for other units. Basic technical specifications RTU7C unit is shown in
table Tab. 1.

The RTUC unit can be directly integrated into the SCADA Mikrodispečink environment. Using the RTU
Communicator communication server with an OPC, DDE or TCP interface, units can be integrated into any third
party monitoring or control systems. RTU User Center enables to communicate with all series of RTU units through
GPRS, Ethernet or through a series interface. Each unit in the system has its own serial number and IP address.
The number of connected units is almost unrestricted. As a platform for running the application, any PC with OS
MS Windows 2000 or higher which is equipped with a GSM GPRS modem or Ethernet connection can be used.
Beyond this server it is possible to operate a system for the collection of data, control and visualization by means of
SCADA/HMI, e.g. in environment of Promotic, InTouch, Mikrodispečink, ControlWeb, Citect, or many others.
The linkage can also be implemented by standard communication protocols, including network protocols.

2.1.1 Supply of the RTU unit

For the unit supply it is necessary to use a stabilized source of DC voltage, 10 to 40 V DC. To supply the unit it is
required to use a stabilized DC voltage power supply source of 10 V DC to 40 V DC, or an AC voltage power
supply source of 10 V AC to 30 V AC. In case of supplying the unit by DC voltage, it does not depend
on its polarity.
The external source of the supply unit is connected to the unit by a PWR connector (a WAGO 734-102 connector is
included in the delivery).

2.3 Digital inputs

RTU7C unit is mounted with card with four digital inputs. Inputs share the same connector with four digital outputs.
Inputs are in one group, which can be configured as active inputs (excitation by external contact) or passive inputs
(excitation by external voltage). In case of excitation by an external voltage, it is recommended to use the voltage
from a unit's SELV power supply source. In case of using other power supply source, it must be also the SELV
one. The choice between the type of inputs is performed by a switch located on the bottom of the unit, see Fig. 4.
Switching to position P are selected passive inputs, switching to A are selected active inputs. If the active inputs
are chosen, there is galvanically isolated voltage of 12 or 24 V on common terminal, which is used to drive
the inputs.

setting the unit can be used to transfer signals and measurements into the superior SCADA system and for the
sending control commands from the SCADA system to the unit or as a port for the parametrization of the unit, or for
reading the conditions and values from other devices.
The COM1 interface is galvanically isolated with 500 V DC insulation for one minute. The type of the interface on
the COM1 (RS-232/422/485) port can be adjusted by the parameterization SW. To indicate the transfer of data for
this interface, LEDs are directly built into the connector. When the RS-485 interface is activated, it is able
to connect a 120-Ω terminator by inserting a jumper JP1 (in the right near a COM1 interface connector). If it is
necessary to connect the terminators (i. e. twice 120 Ω) at a communication line for RS-422, then it is also required
to insert – besides the jumper JP1 – a jumper JP2 (in the left near the COM1 interface connector). To perform
this action, it is necessary to remove the plastic cover on these connectors. The location of the adjusting elements
is shown in Fig. 9. If the communication line at the COM1 interface is set to a RS-232 mode, then the jumpers JP1
and JP2 cannot be included to ensure a correct functionality.

A.1.2.5 Viewer

The RTU7 Viewer works with SVG files. These files can be created in SCADA Microdispecink or freeware Inscape
application (from the version 0.91). If you do not use Microdispecink skip to the section SVG Inskape editing.
How to upload SVG image to the RTU7, it is described in the section Import SVG.
The Viewer is supported in the ELVAC RTU7 unit with communication card COMIO-PC2 and from firmware version
157.05.

Export SVG from Microdispecink

To export image as SVG file, open WO image in WEdit and right click anywhere in it to show a context menu. At
the end on the menu there us an option “Save to SVG file” – click it to open “Export to SVG” dialog.

Inscape SVG editing

The RTU7 viewer uses SVG files, which can be obtained from Export of SCADA Mikrodispecink, or it can be drawn
by hand in freeware SW Inscape. Scheme/plan can be drawn as a standard picture with tools in the Inscape. There
can be defined in the drawing the following active areas:
Pages, which define moving between whole overview and details of scheme/plan.
Active objects (references) related to switching between pages.
Active objects (inputs/outputs) related to signals in RTU7.
Hidden objects (system configuration), used for example for ERIC TCP/SP side control panel cooperation, for
coloring of active object etc.
The behaviour of each object is defined by object properties. The properties of above mentioned active areas 3 and
4 are then used in RTU7 firmware for connecting the object with internal addresses and data in ELVAC RTU7.
The home page is a first page displayed after the first running of the viewer. It is usually also the overview of whole
scheme/plan of application. The first page (home) can be defined also as the main menu of application.

Fig. 38 – Context menu on rectangle object

Then can be also defined subpages, where it can be displayed the details of scheme/plan. There can be defined
the active object (Reference), that are used for moving between the pages.
The edges of page are defined by a rectangle. Insert a rectangle and set the Description (Object Properties in
context menu or Shift+Ctrl+O) value to “page={home},hide={1}”. The parameter “page” defines page with name

-49- Rev 12; 7/16

User Manual

“home”. The parameter “hide” hides a rectangle in a web browser. SVG file must have home page. Each page has
a unique name and number of pages is unlimited.
The following step is the sample of active object, which defines the moving from subpage to home page.
Paint own object which will simulate the button. Set the Description value to “goto={home}”. The parameter “goto”
defines the reference to page with name “home”.

Fig. 39 – Definition of link to page "home"

The RTU7 inputs and outputs are defined by setting value of Description to “point={}” or “pointiec={}”. The
arguments of these parameters are described in the section Descriptions.

Fig. 40 – Definition of input object

The inputs can be colored according to the values from the RTU7 and animation sets or can be displayed as a text
in tables. The outputs work as the buttons.

User Manual

Fig. 41 – Dialog which appears after clicking on output object

For the system configuration, there are used the text objects, that can be places anywhere in the drawing and they
are hidden in RTU7 viewer. They contain the additional parameter, which define the behaviour of the system, like
for example the coloring sets in scheme/plan or signalization LED in ERIC PPC 161 side control panel.
If text doesn’t exist (for example when there is new SVG file created), add it and set the Description value to
“hide={1}”. It is possible add other parameters for example signaling LED “sigled={}” or animation set “set[]={}”.

Import SVG to RTU7 COMIO-PC

Stránka zobrazovače se otevře přes kontextové menu skupiny Units nebo jednotky Communication module na
stránce Units.

A.1.2.6 Restart of the application

RTU7C can be restarted by clicking on the button Reboot application in the menu Service or by clicking on
Commands Reset on the context menu of unit. Restart longs 10 seconds.
A new configuration is loaded after restart (saved configuration changes are applied).

A.1.2.7 Firmware update

Update of firmware is done by Service - Update Firmware.

An example filename of file with firmware is RTU7C_FW_133_151_01.efw, where numbers 151_01 defines version
of the firmware.

A.1.3 Possibilities of securing communication over GSM

Produced communication cards and modules provide different levels of security. Using private APN, SIM PIN and
configuration password (not default) is generally recommended. Further phone number, IP address and credentials
should not be written on the SIM cards or next to it. The firewall should be configured properly on the control centre
side. Communication between SIM cards should not be allowed.
Tab. 22 shows a comparison of different communication cards with GSM interface. Customized secure FW can be
provided to customers with specific needs.

3.2 Firmware upgrade

In all RTU units produced by ELVAC the FW in the indirect digital output cards (equipped with own C, processor)
can be remotely upgraded. Firmware upgrade using web interface is available for some cards, units and modules
(COMIO4, COMIO-PC, RTU7, ESP7, etc.). The RTU User Center is used for firmware upgrade of the other units,
cards and modules. The control of digital outputs, measurement, protections, and so on does not work during the
upgrading of the firmware. After firmware upgrade is finished normal operation of the unit/card/module is restored.
