Submitted by:Franklin S.Ongcoy

I. INTRODUCTION:

Social media is defined as forms of electronic communication (such as websites) through which
people creates online communication to share information, ideas, personal messages etc. Social media
has become very popular and important to all ages of people. It contains several channels like
audios/videos callings, blogging, communicating, texting, sharing contents all over the world and so
many characteristics. At present social media is becoming a prominent part of life for many youth today.
The uses of social media are increasing rapidly all over the world. In recent years, people are shifting
from watching television and listening to radios to use social media. Thus the social media is impacting
on human being living styles and on society especially on the students. In spite of having many
positive aspects, there are many risks that come with the use of sites such as less study time, poor
academic performance due to the heavy participation on social media networks and decadence of
social behavior etc. In order to make the right choices about social media we must explore the current
scenario by doing the research on the topic thoroughly. Now a day’s people are introduced with
various types of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Whats App, Linked In and so on. These are
helping one to communicate with another instead of long distance. Thus technology is not only
making people advanced, but also making them social. People from different stages are getting the
benefits from the social media. Specially, students from schools, colleges and universities are being
interested to get connected with various social media through Smartphone, computer and other
technologically improved electronic devices.

The use of social media among students has reached high levels and has affected their study
time, poor grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as well as diverting their
attention from their studies. Students spend much of their study time on social networks than in
their academic undertakings and it has affected their Grade Point Average . Investigation on
impact of social media was done here in Philippines which focused on student’s academic
performance in tertiary institution just a few research has been done so far in the tertiary institution
pertaining this topic and the researcher’s respondent were information technology students the
concentration of this research will be Management, Information Technology (IT) by the students of
University of the Visayas.
The overall objective of the research is to investigate the social media impact on academic
performance of students in University of the Visayas. Precisely, the purpose of this study seeks.

* To examine the impact of time appropriateness on students’ academicperformance of social

media on time appropriateness.

* To examine the impact of nature of usage on students’ academic performance.

* To examine the impact of health addiction on students’ academic performance.

* To examine the impact of time duration on students’ academic performance.

* To examine the impact of friends and people connection on students’ academic performance

* To examine the impact of security/privacy problems on students’ academic performance.

2. THESIS STATEMENT :

The purpose of this research study is to examine the impact of social media on students' academic
performance. A structural questionnaire was constructed to elicit information from 345 randomly
selected students of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Tangail,
Bangladesh. Both univariate and multivariate analysis were used to meet he objective. The descriptive
statistics were used to analyze the demographic data and educational information while a multiple
regression model was applied to show the influence of social media on students' academic performance.
Research findings showed that a large number of respondents experienced negative effects such as late
submission of assignment, less study time and poor academic performance due to the heavy
participation on social media networks. A portion of the students provided positive feedback about the
involvement with the terrorist and militant activities and the tendency to the predisposition with the
political issues due to social media. To this end, the study suggested that social media should be used for
educational purposes as well; social networking sites should be expanded and new pages should be
created to enhance academic activities, avoid setbacks in the students' academic performance; and
students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use social networking sites.

The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook has
become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it all started has been a hobby for
several computer literates individual has changed to become a social norm and existence-style for
students around the world According to students and teenagers have especially recognized these
social media platforms to be able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personas and
showcase their social live. Facebook users often experience poor academic performance. Also stated
that social media has a negative association with students’ academic performance which is
much greater than the advantages derived through the use of social media platforms.

III. BODY

Social media are web-based services that gives individual the opportunity to create either a public or
semi-public profile within a bounded system, add a list of others to with they share a connection and
view and transvers their list of connections and those made by others within the system. Therefore, this
study was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of use of social media on students’
academic performance . In other to measure social media platforms a questionnaire was developed
based on past literatures. The independent variables includes: time appropriateness, time duration,
Nature of Usage, Health Addiction, Friend-People connection and security/privacy problems while the
dependent variable was student academic performance. This research adopted descriptive and
explanatory research design. It also employed the use of cross sectional survey method using survey
questionnaires that contains items with a sample of students from Collegewas selected using
convenient sampling method. The data collected was analyzed using description means and
regression. The Pearson’s correlation coefficients of four independent are correlated with student’s
academic performance while two are not. However, using the regression analysis four variables is
significant which include: Time appropriateness, people-friend connection, nature of Usage and health
addiction while Time duration and security/privacy problems are not significant. Thus considering the
abnormal use of Social media platforms by students, it is expedient that Universities and colleges in
Philippines educate their students to positively use these platforms for educational purposes which will
eventually result in a positive impact on their academic performance.

People around the globe have been addicted to the internet which has given rise to more students using
social media more often than before. Advised and recommended that those who are addicted
users love to use the internet to set back their personal and professional responsibilities in which
the final outcome is poor academic performance. It was highlighted in the finding of that social
media platforms (Facebook, YouTube etc) users usually devote lesser time to their studies has to
compared to nonusers did and subsequently has lower . It was also mentioned , that among the
major distraction of current generation that social media platform (such Facebook, Youtube etc.)
remains a major distractions. According to , there is a correlation between academic performance
and the dependency on social media platforms. Researchers have conducted different studies to find
out the influence of social platforms users, for instance a study on ‘’impact of Facebook on
undergraduates academic performance’’, stated that social platforms have negative impact on
students.

According to the outcome, students’ academic performance is affected the more they use
Facebook. Social platforms are mainly used by students for socializing activities rather than
academic purpose. In addition, said that majority of students feel that social platforms have positive
impact on academic growth. In a different research conducted by other student it was ascertain that
students use platforms mainly for chatting and making friends. ‘’The consequences of internet
and social platforms on students’ academic growth’’ a study than it was seen that internet has
spread its wings to reach teenager’s school life. It was also observed by Young that students are
more dependent on internet to access info that pertain their academic life as well as
entertainment. Additionally, Young said that internet, though take a lot of time, and have less
impact on studies. It was observed that impact of social platforms rest on the degree of usage.
Observed that internet addiction is significantly and negatively related to students’ academic
growth, as well as emotional attributes. Confirms statement when he opined that the negative
influence of internet is only on excessiv.ation, participation and collaboration of information online.
Today’s young generation, especially teens and youth are using technology through innovative ways
due to which they are referred to as millennial and have changed the way they think, work and
communicate even though they are in formative years of their life. Today’s youth because of
social platforms have become technology addicts and are quite withdrawn.

Data was collected using primary data set through the distribution of questionnaire. According
to questionnaires to acquire primary data the best suitable research are based on experiment,
observation and survey. Hence, the survey method can supply researchers with data on attitude,
feelings, beliefs and Envisioned behavior that is additionally, the assembling of different kind of info
from the respondents, questionnaires will be appropriate for this research which will enable get the
actual info from the target population. A random sampling technique was used. In this research
two department of schools are involved. This is because in Malaysia research are hardly done in this
area. The second reason is that the researcher chose these department as it has more number of
students in both colleges as compared to other departments. questionnaires will be distributed in
both colleges by means of direct contacts which is face-to-face with the respondents. The
questionnaires is divided into two sections, section A consist of the demography of the respondents
such as (age, gender, departments, race and nationality) while as section B contains the targeted
questions to convey the entire enquiry. The respondents differ from first semester students to final year
students. The investigation uses convenient sampling. Since, respondent are willingness to participate in
the research. This makes it further suitable for this research than any other form of sampling and
respondents will be picked at random. In order to formulate the research questions, hierarchical
sampling techniques will be used to sample the respondents. The research will use an evaluation
question that is written in English language Lessons from Facebook: the effect of social network sites on

addiction in Students: A case of concern

Social interactions, information sharing, and the receipt of updates through social networks.Social media
applications are beneficial in educational institutions, medical sciences, and businessfirms. Social media
has significantly transformed over the last decade the ways in which people, socialcommunities, and
other organizations create, share, and consume information. The emergence ofsocial media has shaped
the world in many ways, and it has been affecting people of all walks of lifeThe adverse factors of social
media, such as depression, stress, anxiety, and other health problems, explored in this study influence
the student communities of Pakistan. Students of selected universitiespreferred to utilize social media
for creating awareness, reducing stress, gaining useful information, and making new friends. In contrast,
some students spend excessive time on social media, resulting ingreat amounts of wasted time . One
dangerous result of the reliance on online technology is thatsome fraudulent institutes have provided a
bogus degree through online learning, and students fall intotheir trap. Moreover, some students use
online jargon while completing homework and writing examsand papers, suggesting that social media
and social networks have blurred the difference betweenformal and informal writing . The excessive use
of social media makes students emotionally andphysically imbalanced and results in dull or irritable
behavior. Considering the pros and cons of socialmedia, students’ parents should impose regulations
on their children’s use of social media, as thenegative impact of social media may affect a student’s
educational performance .These findingsare useful to encourage parents to keep an eye on their
children, because excessive use of social mediais harmful to adolescents. This balanced approach is
useful, because using social media during thelearning process provides benefits to students. However,
the adverse effects of social media mightcause health damage with disproportionate use . Typically,
students prefer to communicate withclassmates and friends in person. Students may experience fraud
or scams during the use of social media, as social sites are used from time to time to take advantage of
other users. Social mediahas drastically and negatively influenced students by setting unrealistic
expectations and causingstressful situations. Such adverse impacts may cause health issues with
excessive social media use, such as anxiety, stress and depression disorders, brainwashing, the
absorption of fake news, marriagesbreakups, trolling, cyberbullying, privacy abuses, online witch hunts,
and the wasting of time.In this study, a conceptual model was experimentally tested by surveying real
users of socialmedia after a comprehensive review of technology acceptance, technology addiction, and
meetingswith student communities at select universities. The findings reveal that technology
acceptance, its ease of use, and its perceived benefits play a decisive role in students’ decisions to use
socialmedia. These findings suggest that taking a balanced approach to social media can help avoid
thenegative health consequences of excessive social media use. Government officials can also
benefitfrom these findings, and they can take appropriate measures to protect the health of students
andothers in society from the excessive use of social media. In short, student communities described
theirobservations of online posts or content that encouraged them to develop behaviors to prevent
adverseemotional responses. Future research should investigate additional factors to expand on the
elementsalready used in this study to gain additional insight into students’ attitudes towards the
sustainableconsumption of social media. Further investigations should also explore the effects of specific
socialnetworking platforms, including Facebook, WeChat, What’s App, and Twitter. Moreover,
similarstudies can be conducted by including other age groups besides university students or by
examining other cities8

The influence of social networking sites on students’ academic performance because instructions in
these two universities are based on the queen’s language which all the students understand and
can answer the questions asked without any difficulties. Nonetheless, according to Likert scale is the
utmost suitable rating to be used in designing the research questionnaires. A scale will used to finger out
respondent pact to questions enquired. This scale is best suitable since it gives respondents the
assertion for strong pact or not. This study will analyze the data collected through quantitative
analysis. Because statistical analysis give the scholar the chance to get expressive information through
mean output . Percentage will help to survey if the mean is in line with the view. To analyze the data
the descriptive statistics of questionnaire will be acquired from in order to find out the normality
of the questionnaire based on skewness and kurtosis statistics. Followed by the running of the reliability
test, validity test, correlation, regression and also find out the sample adequacy using the in order to
analyze the collected data for the findings of the study. This will allow the researcher ascertain
whether the respondents agree to it or not that the variable social media platform have an
impact on their academic performance in tertiary institution

IV:SUMMARY:

This section of the paper is a summary of the findings of the multiple regression analysis
conducted for the purpose of investigating the research questions. Shows the explanatory power of the
regression model used in this research. The dependent variable of the model is students’ academic
performance and the independent variables (predictors) are privacy problems, time
appropriateness, and duration, nature of usage, networking and addiction. As indicated, the
predictors explain 50.5% of variation in students’ academic performance.

Based on the findings and conclusions of this study, the following recommendations are made,

 The teachers may encourage the students to minimize time wastage on chatting and other
irrelevant engagements which are not of major importance by counseling about the negative
influence of social media.

 Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and parents should monitor activities of

the students on social media in order to protect them pornographic and other unwarranted
materials.

 The use of LinkedIn should be increased because the site gives the facilities of linking employers
with potential employees, provides a place for individuals to post resumes and offers referrals and
for employers to post current job openings

V. Conclusion

This research focused to investigate the positive and adverse effects of social media on
students’learning environment. In the current era, the traditional teaching “models” and learning
environmentreceive heavy criticism because of their inability to provide students room for variation and
the incredibly increasing popularity of social media has made the transition to supplementary flexible
models of teaching a necessity . This work contributes to the pertinent literature byinvestigating social
media use based on the data of this population. This study argues that it is a novelcontribution to
scientific knowledge as there was no prior existing literature evidence that bridges and integrates the
students’ views on the adoption of social media as a supporting tool in higher education. Students and
educators are recognized as the most pertinent stakeholders from an educational pointof view as these
two-use social medial applications to facilitate learning environment and co-creation

of knowledge. The positive aspects of social media include its technical contribution to educational
institutionsand several industries, such as health, services, tourism, and communities. The positive
characteristicsinclude the sharing of opinions with others; the raising of awareness; the sharing of
knowledge;the building of relationships, identity, reputation, and contacts; the improving of social
influence;and the development of other communication skills. Social media is increasing across the
world, and an increasing number of adolescents, student communities, and others are joining thesesocial
media sites to interact with friends, family, and strangers. Social media influences humanbehavior.

The primary objective of the research undertaken was to throw light on how effectively the usage
of social networking sites has affected the students by evaluating both the positive and negative aspects.
Social media serve to students’ purpose of connecting them with people all across the globe by not
hampering their working hours and schedules. Despite the several benefits that come with the
participation of the students on social media networks, its misuse could badly affect the academic
performance. The findings of this study showed that, there is positive consequence of average study
time and negative impact of time spending on various social networking websites on students’
academic performance. It indicates that, the educational performance increases by giving more
time on study and decreases for spending more time on social networking websites. Above all, in the
era of globalization and technology, a single day can’t be thought without using social networking
sites, but should be used in a limited and positive way without getting addicted.

It is concluded that social media platforms has a significant impact on students’ academic performance
in student tertiary institution. Nevertheless, among the six variables used in this research, time
appropriateness and health addiction has a stronger significant influence on students’ academic
performance. This is because time management plays an essential role in determining the success or
failure of an individual. Thus students who lack time management can easily fall prey to the negative
impact which social media platforms present to its uses. Likewise, health addiction, students who are
engrossed with social media platforms ends up skipping their meals which has a health impact on them.
Such students become malnourished and could possibly fall ill which is will directly have an impact on
students. Also, the nature of usage and friend-people connection has an impact also on the performance
of students but notpeople connection, nature of usage, health addiction and security/privacy problems
