What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written to help you, young learners learn better the
English language. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary levels of
learners. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the learning
competencies for Grade 8 learners.

The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) covered in this module is the
Active and Passive Voice of the verb.

Objectives:

As a learner of this module, you are expected to:


 K-Identify the voice of the verb in each sentence
 S- change active voice to passive, and vice versa
 A-express importance on when to use active and passive

Before you proceed to the other parts of this module, check your readiness for
the lesson. The test below will help measure your prior knowledge about recognizing
sentences in the active voice and passive voice.

Directions: Read and answer the questions carefully. Write AV if the sentence is in the
active voice and PV if it is in the passive voice.

2. This route was used by the motorist to get rid of the checkpoints.

such as movie clip trailer. This time, you will be learning about using active and passive
voice meaningfully in varied contexts.
The activity presented below will help you construct sentences in passive and active
voice.
This time, you are tasked to group the sentences into active and passive voice.
Use the table provided in grouping the sentences.

1. Donna donated surgical masks to Lingig NHS.


2. The quarantine facilities were prepared by the volunteers.
3. Information about COVID-19 were disseminated by local members of IATF.
4. Grace follows the COVID-19 health protocols.
5. Rey bought 10 gallons of alcohol.
6. Social distancing is strictly implemented by the DOH.

What is it

In this part of the module, you will now be learning new concepts on recognizing
positive and negative messages conveyed in a text through the different activities and
exercises.

Let us know the different sentences in active and passive voice.

Active Voice
- when the subject does or "acts upon" the verb, the sentence is said to be in the active
voice. These examples show that the subject is doing the verb's actions.
1. The old father (subject) gives (verb) the money to the boy.
2. Carlos Bulosan (subject) revealed (verb) the reality about social discrimination in the
text.
3. The rich man ( subject ) accused (verb) the poor family of stealing the spirit of his
family's food by smelling.

Passive Voice
- when the subject receives the action of the verb, the sentence is said to be in the
passive voice. These examples show how the subject - verb relationship has changed.
1. The money is given by the old father to the boy.
(Active v - gives : Passive v - is given)
2. The reality about social discrimination was revealed by Carlos Bulosan in the text.
(Active v - revealed : Passive v- was revealed)
3. The poor family was accused by the rich man for stealing the spirit of his family's food
by smelling.
(Active v- accused : Passive v- was revealed)
Exercise:
Change the following sentences from active voice to passive voice.
1. He teaches English.
2. The child is eating bananas.
3. She is writing a letter.
4. The master rewarded the servant.
5. He was writing a book

What’s More

Active Voice means that the subject does or “acts upon the verb”.
Example: The old father (Subject) gives (verb) the money to the boy.

While Passive Voice- means when the subject receives the action of the verb.
Example: The money is given by the old father to the boy.
(active verb: gives: passive verb- is given)

knowledge and skills on active and passive voice of the verb.

In your notebook, write 5 sentences in active voice. Then, have a partner and let
him/her change your sentences into passive voice. You will do the same to your
partner’s output.
