Modified Heat cured acrylics

The majority of acrylic resin is used in the unmodified form. Products have
been developed in which attempts have been made to improve impact
strength, fatigue resistance or radio-opacity.

Modified Heat cured acrylics include:

 Rubber Reinforced Acrylics/High Impact Strength Materials.

 Fiber Reinforced Acrylic.
 Rapid Heat Polymerized Acrylics/Hybrid Acrylics Material.

Rubber Reinforced Acrylics/High Impact Strength Materials

 Material :
 These materials are produced by the incorporation of elastomers/rubbers
( Low molecular weight butadiene-styrene), to improve impact strength of
heat cured acrylic resin.
 Elastomer is able to absorb energy on impact and thus protects the acrylic
from fracture.
 The rubber particles are grafted to methyl methacrylate so that they will
bond well to the heat polymerized matrix.
 Supply :
 These materials are supplied in a powder and liquid form and have
processing similar to heat-cured methyl methacrylate materials.
 Indication
This type of denture base resin is indicated for patients who drop their
dentures repeatedly, for example , Parkinsonism.

1
 Advantages:

1. Better impact (2.1 J) and fatigue properties.

2. Low crazing .
3. Greater resistance to crack propagation.
4. Small decrease in water sorption as a result of the incorporation of rubber.
5. Low residual monomer.
6. Good attachment to teeth and good fit.
 Disadvantages:

1. Expensive.
2. Reduced stiffness.

2
Fiber Reinforced Acrylic

 Material :
Carbon fibers ,Glass fibers , ultra-high modulus polyethylene, Kevlar
(poly-P-phenylene terephthalamide) and metal fillers (Zerconia and
alumina) have been used as fiber-reinforcing agents for PMMA removable
and fixed prosthetic appliances.
 The mechanical behavior of the material is affected by the orientation of
the fibers.
 Advantages :
1. They stiffen the denture base, reducing the possibility of fatigue fracture.
2. Increases the flexural strength.

 Disadvantages :
1. Must be placed in the part of the denture, which is under a tensile stress
(positioning is critical).
2. Difficult to construct dentures.
3. Appearance of the denture is adversely affected because the carbon fibers
are black.
4. Kevlar fibers complicate the process and are straw yellow in colour, so they
affect the appearance.
5. An ineffective bond between glass fiber and matrix resin can result in a
weakening rather than strengthing effect.
 Glass fibers are irritating and could injure soft tissues.
6. Adding metal fillers lower the polymerization shrinkage but deteriorates
the properties.

3
Placement and position of the fibers :

1. Placing the fibers in tension zone in a denture during mastication, which is

considered the weakest area.
2. Placing reinforcement fibers at 90 degrees to the fracture line when
repairing the denture.
3. Mesh should be placed superficially and should not be buried in the
denture.

4
Rapid Heat Polymerized Acrylics/Hybrid Acrylics Material

The denture base resins used with rapid heat polymerized polymers are the
same as those used with conventional material except that they contain
altered initiator system.
The initiator allows them to be processed in boiling water for 20 minutes.
Advantage:
 Rapid processing reduces laboratory time.
Disadvantage:

1. Thicker areas of denture bases of 6 mm or more have a high level of

porosity.
2. Short duration of heating leaves behind a higher level of the residual
monomer.
