Beginner Rhythm Guitar Course – Level 1

Instructor: Professor Monty Craig


Who should take this class?
This class can be taken by complete beginners by itself or as an addition to private guitar lessons. This
class is also for anyone who has played guitar and wants a complete review of open chords and basic
rhythms.

Goals of Class:
1) Learn 16 basic open position chords
2) Basic strumming and rhythm
3) Learn to play in time
4) Learn to play rhythm guitar to basic folks songs

Ages: 10 to adult
Cost: $50 for 4 weekly classes
Class Duration: 1 hour

Guitar – Electric or acoustic

Week 1 – Materials covered:

1) Name of the 6 open strings


2) Name of the left hand fingers
3) How to hold a pick and how to make a downward strum
4) Understanding frets and fretting chords
5) How to read chord girds
6) Open position major chords: E, A, D, G, and C
7) Using the metronome BPM 40
8) Counting in 4/4 time

9) Basic strumming between the 5 major chords
10) Rhythmic musicality

Week 2 – Materials covered:

1) Review of Week 1
2) Open position minor chords: Em, Am, Dm, Gm, and Cm
3) Basic strumming between all major and minor chords
4) Increasing speed of chord changes - BPM 40 to 60
5) Basic rhythms – whole notes and whole rests, half notes and half rests, quarter notes and
quarter rests

Week 3 – Materials covered:

1) Review of previous classes


2) Open position dominant 7th chords: E7, A7, D7, G7, C7, and B7
3) Basic strumming between all 16 chords
4) Increasing speed of chord changes: BPM 60 to 80
5) Counting in ¾ time and 6/8 time
6) Basic Rhythm – dotted half note
7) Basic music theory: I, IV, V and V7 chord progressions in the keys of E, A, D, G
8) Strumming the chords to basic folk songs:

 America The Beautiful
 Aura Lee
 Blue Danube Waltz and Du Du
 Bury Me Beneath The Willow
 Can Can
