GESTALT PSYCHOTHERAPY

Elmira Strange
What is Psychotherapy?

“Psychotherapy- also called “talk therapy” or just plain therapy- is a process whereby psychological
problems are treated through communication and relationship factors between an individual and a
trained mental health professional.
Modern psychotherapy is time-limited, focused, and usually occurs once a week for 45-50 minutes per
session.” (Herkov, PsychCentral, 2016)
“Clinically speaking, psychotherapy is a form of intervention between a trained psychotherapist and a
client in order to aid in the problems of living…
Psychotherapists use a variety of techniques in order to help their patients. These can be through
communication, behavioral conditioning, and other methods a therapist sees fit to help improve a patients
quality of living and mental state.” (Therapy Tribe, 2017)

Benefits of Psychotherapy
1. Confidential and non-judgmental environment
2. Professionally structured dialogue
3. The therapist’ professional knowledge of psychological issues
4. The therapist lack of bias (I.e. not taking sides, giving advice)
5. The therapist objective view of the case study (I.e. recognizing symptoms of mental health disorder)
6. The therapist’ ability to analyze and dismantle the problem

Psychotherapy is a very effective method of treatment for psychological issues. It is not only for mental
health problems, but for other issues (e.g. stress-related factors, relationship-related problems)

What psychotherapists do?

- helping the client to understand their thought process, feelings and behavior
- helping the client to understand their inner conflict
- assisting the clients in finding new ways to deal with distressing and negative situations
- providing information in groups and organizing workshops
- teaching at educational establishments
- writing research papers
- constantly updating their professional knowledge
- networking with other health professionals
- evaluating therapy cases and writing reports

Counseling “falls under the umbrella term ‘talking therapies’ and allows people to discuss their problems
at any difficult feelings they encounter in a safe, confidential environment. The term can mean different
things to different people, but in general it is a process people seek when they want to change something
in their lives or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.

A counsellor is not there to sit you down and tell you what to do- instead they will encourage you to talk
about what’s bothering you in order to uncover any root causes and identify your specific ways of
thinking. The counsellor may then look to create a plan of action to either help you reconcile your issues
or help you to find ways of coping”.

Some experts believe that while areas of the two professions overlap, psychotherapists work on longer
term concerns and have the training to reflect this. Others argue that there is little to no distinction
between the professions. Many counselors now undergo similar extensive training as psychotherapists”
(Counselling Directory Online, 2017)
The average length of therapy (e.g. 6-8 sessions for counselling, several months for psychotherapy)

The focus on the problem (e.g. current crisis situations, exploring ‘the past’, relationships in childhood,
repressed memories, etc)

The client’s ability to self-manage own emotional issues. Counselling- for people who can resolve own
problems but need some guidance; psychotherapy- for people with long term or deeper issues (mental
health disorders and conditions)

Changing behaviour vs understanding the reasons. Counselling helps to change behaviour in current
situation; Psychotherapy helps to realize ‘the reason’.

Differences (e.g. length and depth of therapy, focus on issues)

Some clients would benefit more from counselling, whereas others would benefit more from
psychotherapy.

Each of these specialties have different approaches.
