INTRODUCTION
I. LET’S PONDER!
Think about the public speaker that you have listened or watched to.
Did the speaker show confidence, enthusiasm, and appropriate gestures?
Speech delivery can show the level of confidence and preparation you have
as a speaker. If you combine your confidence and preparations on your
presentation, surely you will have a success as a speaker!
1
DISCUSSION
The success of a speech depends largely on how much the speaker can
interest the audience in hearing what you have to say (North, 2016). You
need a strategy for increasing the importance of the speech to the
audience, conveying its paramount idea, and turning a listener into a
follower of your views. We all consider ourselves unique and want to be
interesting to others. Being sincerely interested in the audience and
knowing their expectations comprise the key to effective speech delivery.
2. How they connect with their audience (using eye contact, body
movements, and facial expressions)
Eye contact is the cement that binds together speakers and their
audiences. When they speak, their eyes involve their listeners in their
presentation.
A speaker realizes that appropriate facial expressions and body
movements are important parts of effective communication. In fact,
facial expressions and gestures are often the key determinants of the
meaning behind the message. People watch a speaker’s face during
a presentation.
3. How they present themselves (stage presence: how they look, stand,
walk, use nonverbal cues, act on and off the stage)
A slight smile, a glance at the far wall of the room, and posture should
express confidence and openness. Gesticulation should be synchronous
and consonant with what you say. By making movements with your
2
hands, you emphasize the main thoughts and add confidence to your
words.
Multiple studies have shown that appearance influences everything
from employment to social status. Whether we like to admit it or not,
ours is a culture obsessed with appearance. Attractive people are
more likely to get the job, get the promotion, and get the girl (or guy).
Bonnie Berry’s 2008 research on physical appearance also shows
that communicator attractiveness influences how an audience
perceives the credibility of the speaker. Overall, more attractive
speakers were thought to be more credible.
4. How they use their voice in terms of volume, pitch ,rate or speed,
pauses, vocal variety, and pronunciation.
Voice and speech patterns, speed and volume are important for a
speaker because, according to numerous scholarly studies, up to 60
percent of all information is transmitted to the audience through these
aspects of speech. Any report should be expressive and include some
emotional aspects such as quietness, solemnity, reproachfulness,
beseeching, etc. By varying the tonality, speed, and volume of the
performance, you can align your speech to the general theme and the
overall aim.
The items enumerated are the tools that can help you develop your speech.
Practice in front of a mirror and observe your own delivery with these tools in
mind. Alternatively, you can practice in front of your family, friends,
classmates, or those who have already done public speaking. You can ask for
feedback or seek advice from them. Explore which tools work best for you and
develop a habit of effective delivery to enhance your public speaking skill.
Keep practicing and engaging yourself in speaking situations. Remember, you
already have the public speaking skill, but you will only improve if you speak
in public constantly.

SUMMARY
These tools will indeed help us in honing our skills in public speaking.
We should always practice our own delivery with these enumerated tools in
mind. We can practice with the help of our family, friends, and those people
who are public speakers. We can learn, seek advice, and hear feedbacks
from them. Lastly, we should remember that we already have the public
speaking skills, but the only way that we can improve is through constant
public speaking exposure.
“…never stop learning or working for what you want. Nothing comes easy, ever, if
you want something, you have to work for it. By working for it I mean work on
your craft, learn from people who have something to teach. It’s just like anything
else, practice makes perfect.”
