Aim: To improve students’ knowledge regarding the use of modal verbs.
Subsidiary aims: -to get the students involved in the topic;
-to develop students’ listening skills;
-to develop students’ writing skills;
-to develop students’ communication skills.
- to choose the appropriate modal to complete a sentence;
- to cite the importance of using modals in the sentence;
- to rephrase sentences using the appropriate modal.

Visual-aids: video images, computer, whiteboard, projector

LESSON STAGES

ACTIVITY 1: WARM UP

 AIM: to get students ready for the English class by having an informal conversation
(greetings, pupils’ feelings, weather, etc.)
 TIMING: 5 minutes
 TYPE OF INTERACTION: T  S, S  T
PROCEDURE: Teacher greets the students and asks them how they are and about the
weather. Teacher asks students to brainstorm some endings for the following sentences and
share the answers with the class.
If I had two heads, ...
If money grew on trees, ...
If you were a sea turtle, ...

ACTIVITY 2: HOMEWORK CHECK-UP

 AIM: to check whether students have accomplished their task well.


 TIMING: 5 minutes
 TYPE OF INTERACTION: T  S, S  T
PROCEDURE: Teacher asks some questions like “Have you done your homework?” “Was it
difficult?” “Who wants to read?” and then she names a few pupils to read their homework (a
formal e-mail) and corrects it if necessary. Pupils respond individually. Teacher involves all
students in the correction process.

ACTIVITY 3: TRANSITION TO THE NEW LESSON

 AIM: to make the transition to the topic of the lesson Revising Modal Verbs
 TIMING: 5 minutes
 TYPE OF INTERACTION: T  S, S  S, S  T
PROCEDURE: Teacher asks students to listen to a compilation of songs and at the end tell
the teacher what grammar is predominant in it. While play the song, students must keep their
eyes on the lyrics on the copy distributed by the teacher. The students find out while listening
that the modla verbs are used in every song.

ACTIVITY 4: PRESENTATION (NEW LESSON PROPER)

 AIM:
- To make the Ss revise the uses and functins of modal verbs: can, could, may, might,
will, would, shall, should, must.
 TIMING: 15 minutes
 TYPE OF INTERACTION: T  S, ST
PROCEDURE: Teacher announces the new topic: Revising Modal Verbs. He/she presents a
Power Point material in which every slide contains some sentences with the modal verbs.
The students have to read the sentences and tell the class the functions and uses of the
respective modal verb. The teacher involves all the studentsas he/she asks them to take turns
in reading the sentences on different slides.

 AIM: to give students practice in using the modal verbs

Procedure:
The students are given Worksheet 1 with different sentences. They have to fill in the gaps
with the correct modal verb. The students work individually and at the end they then read
thesentences and correct them orally if necessary.

The students are given some statements and they have to paraphrase them using modal
verbs .The students work in pairs and then they read their new statements.

Procedure:
Students are given Worksheet 3 with sentences in which they have to choose the appropriate
modal verbs. They somplete the sentences then read them andcorrect them if necessary.

Procedure:
Teacher hands out worhsheets with homework and explains the students what they are
supposed to do.
