Cl449 - Dos-II - Unit Test - I - Question Paper

This document is an open book examination for a Design of Structures course. It contains instructions for the exam and two sections. Section I contains two design questions about simply supported beams carrying uniform and point loads. Section II contains short questions about retaining wall design and pressure distributions, as well as two longer design questions - one about checking the stability of a counterfort retaining wall, and the other about designing and detailing the heel of a cantilever retaining wall.

CHAROTAR UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Semester VIII of B. Tech (CL) Examination

Second Unit Test – Open Book Examination

CL 449 – Design of Structures - II

Date: 20/03/2021, Wednesday Time: 05:30 p.m. To 6:45 p.m. Maximum Marks: 30

Instructions:
1. The question paper comprises of two Sections.
2. Section I and II must be attempted and uploaded separately in specific option.
3. Make suitable assumptions and draw neat figures wherever required.

Section – I

Q:1 Design a simply supported beam of 8 m span carrying a reinforced concrete floor capable [15]
of providing lateral restraint to the top flange. The total UDL is made up of 130 kN dead
load including self-weight plus 190 kN live load. In addition, the beam carries a point load
at mid span made up of 55 kN dead load and 80 kN live load (Assuming a stiff bearing
length 125mm).

OR

Q:1 Design a simply supported beam to carry a uniformly distributed load of 60 kN/m. The [15]
effective span of beam is 6 meters. The effective length of compression flange of the beam
is also 6 m. The ends of beam are not free to rotate at the bearings. Do all necessary checks.

Section – II

Q-2 Attempt Any FIVE : [05]

a) Draw qualitative pressure distribution diagram for the following cases of Retaining wall:
[01]
1. The top surface of backfill is horizontal [01]
[01]
2. Wall subjected to surcharge load

3. Soil is fully submerged into water of same height of backfill

b) Draw qualitative deflection shape of cantilever retaining wall. [01]

c) Why shear key is provided in retaining wall? [01]

d) Draw qualitative deflection shape of counterfort retaining wall. [01]

1 of 2
Q-3 Check the stability of Counterfort Retaining Wall as shown in Figure 1. The density of soil [10]
is 16 kN/m3, coefficient of friction 0.5 and its angle of repose is 30°. The surcharge load is
17 kN/m2. Consider M20 and Fe415.

OR

Q-3 Design and detail a heel member of Cantilever Retaining wall. The thickness of heel [10]
member is 350 mm and length as 1.45 m. The total down ward pressure on heel = 87.8
kN/m2. Total upward pressure = 68.3 kN/m2 near connecting end of heel & stem and 18.4
kN/m2 at cantilever end. Consider M20 and Fe415.
