subjected to axial load.
b. The stiffness of a closed coil helical spring is 1.5 N/mm of compression under a maximum 8 Marks
load of 60 N. The maximum shearing stress produced in the wire of the spring is
125 N/mm2. The solid length of spring (when coils are touching) is given as 50 mm. Take

b. A steel column made of a 4 m long hollow circular section, having 300 mm internal 8 Marks
diameter and 20 mm thick, is fixed at both the ends. Determine the safe axial load the
column can carry with a factor of safety 3.5 using Euler’s formula. E=2.1×105 N/mm2.

10. a. Prove that the volumetric strain of a thin cylinder is summation of circumferential strain 6 Marks
and two times of longitudinal strain.
b. A thin cylindrical shell of inside diameter 1.5 m is made of 10 mm thick steel plate. It is of 8 Marks
4 m length and is closed at its both ends. The shell is subjected to an internal fluid pressure
of 2 MPa. Find the change in length, final length, the change in diameter, the final diameter,
