MIE314: Assignment: Table 1 Table 2
1. With the aid of a diagram describe how relative GNSS positioning achieves survey
grade accuracies. [10 marks]
2. Briefly describe any 3 (Three) GIS analysis functions, for each function identified give
an example of where it can be applied in a mining operation. [12 marks]
3. In order to mark the boundary of a new mining claim, a link traverse was run from
control point P to Q in order to coordinate points A, B, and C. Using the data given in
Figure 1, Table 1 and 2, compute the traverse using the Bowditch method to distribute
your misclosure.

4. The site of an engineering project is bound by two straight boundary lines defined by
two roads i.e., Road 1 and Road 2 as well as an irregular boundary in the form of a river
between points A and B as shown in Figure 2.

The offset readings given in Table 3 were taken along the survey line AB to the irregular
boundary defined by the river.

5. Figure 4 shows a 1:1000 scale contour map of a valley where a water reservoir dam is
to be constructed. The area covered by each contour was determined using a planimeter
and recorded as shown in Table 3
.
Table 2: Area covered by each contour
What will the estimated volume be, in mega litres, if the dam is filled to the 1250m
contour? It may be assumed that the bottom of the dam will be at the 1230 contour.
