Tone in Writing
What is tone?
Looking at each setting within Luella High School, which tone (formal or informal) do you
use when you are in them?
Cafeteria: Informal
Gymnasium: Informal
Hallway: Informal
Everyday, we are constantly switching our tone and demeanor depending on our surroundings!
Example: Think of how you would talk to an employee when you need assistance while
shopping. Now, think of how you would speak to the employee if he/she happened to be your
best friend.
Think back on your argumentative essay about Dress Code, why was a formal tone the best
approach? Formal tone was the best approach for the Dress Code Argumentative Essay
because its directed audience was for the principle/administrators so they could
consider my stance in that argument.
Think about your informative essay/project, which tone was the best approach to introduce your
chosen person? A more formal tone because my essay/project could've been for anyone
to see (I made a website). So it could've been someone such as my friend to someone
such as a principle or even a president potentially. So having and keeping a formal tone
was a good choice when it came to that project.
Think about your narrative writing, which tone(s) would be best to express your story?
Joyful, informal, formal (when the time calls for it), humorous, friendly, assertive,
optimistic, and maybe worried. All of this can depend on what story I'm writing/telling.
Assignment:
In at least five sentences, tell Ms. Smith and Ms. Noel how your spring break went:
Spring break was very enjoyable for me. I spent a good portion of the break spending and
having quality time with my parents, cousins, aunts, uncle, and grandmother. For instance, I
went to the Atlanta area and golfed at this establishment named "Top Golf" and although I
wasn't the best at it, I did pretty well for my first time golfing in years. The food there was
astonishing as well as I had plenty of fun. I also for a period of time stayed at my cousins
house and discussed my plans for the summer as well as next year.
Hey mom and dad, I had a lot of fun this spring break. Even with COVID still going on, y'all
still made sure that me, Samantha (younger sister), and Sam (younger brother) had fun.
Although the first time for me and Samantha didn't go well and we went to the Main Event (in
the area of Top Golf) instead since we needed reservations, we still had plenty of fun
regardless. The most fun we had was when we actually went to Top Golf though with Sam. It
was both his and mine's first time going in a really long time, so we appreciate you taking us
there.
Finally, tell your best friend all about your spring break:
I can't lie, I have to be the best golfer to ever touch the Earth. For real, you might think I'm
joking but I went to this place called Top Golf and it was fun not gonna lie. Their food was top
quality too and I was golfing like I held a club my whole life and I was training for that moment.
Sure my first first swings were straight up trash but I made up for it though. I also went
bowling and I know for sure I'd smoke you in that. I got the rust off of the hands and became
LITERALLY a professional bowler by like three or four tries. And if you want to go I'm down
over the summer but I don't want to hear anything if you get smacked completely.
