Film Analysis – The Danish Girl

1. Who is the main character in the film? Describe him/her.

“The Danish Girl” is a film that revolves around the life of Lili Elbe, who
formerly goes by the name Einar Wegener. Born on December 28, 1882, Lili Elbe is a
well-known landscape painter who then passed away on September 13, 1931 at the age of
48 due to complications with his surgery. Although born as a male, Lili Elbe had always
felt her female soul from within. Overtime, this led to her gender reassignment surgery,
which made her a notable transgender pioneer.

2. What happened to the main character? What do you think is the main reason? What are
the triggering factors that led to his changes?

Einar Wegener’s wife, Gerda Wegener, is a portrait artist. During a time wherein
Gerda’s model was not present, she had her husband take the model’s place. This
moment led to the awakening of Lili Elbe. As Einar Wegener had stated, Lili had always
been living inside him. This can be seen in his childhood experiences as well as some
clips in the film wherein his interest in feminine things were apparent. However, the
moment that he acted as a female model for Gerda’s painting, Lili Elbe came to the
surface, eventually deeming Einar Wegener gone as the latter cannot continue putting up
a male facade.

3. Do you think that the main character has a psychological issue? How did you say so?

Throughout the film, Lili Elbe can be seen acting in unpredictable ways which
might not have coincided with Einar Wegener’s decisions. As Lili Elbe continues to
surface, she seeks medical help and was eventually diagnosed as perverted and
schizophrenic. In my opinion, I believe issues such as these are not necessarily
psychological issues. Lili’s problem is more concerned with hormonal issues rather than
a psychological issue. Specifically, what Lili had was Klinefelter syndrome, a disorder of

1
the sex chromosomes that occurs in males. However, in Lili’s case, I believe she had
developed a psychological issue. Due to her true self being closeted up for so long, she
experienced hardships upon her journey which can be seen in moments where she is
detached from reality, confused with former relationships.

4. Are you in favor of gender reassignment? Why or why not?

Personally, I am in favor of gender reassignment. With the technology that we

have today, we should utilize it in such a way which can benefit everyone if possible. I
believe that people should be given the chance to change their gender if that is what will
satisfy them and make them feel like their true selves. Besides, the success rate of gender
reassignment surgery is much higher nowadays so conducting in on those who need
shouldn’t be a problem.

5. What are your learning insights after watching the film? Give at least three.

The film has made me realize a lot of things with regards to gender identity. First,
it opened my eyes to the reality that closeted people face. Seeing how Lili Elbe struggled
with her identity as she switches with Einar Wegener made me think about the dilemma
that these people constantly feel within them as they hide their true selves. It is indeed
mentally exhausting to constantly put up a façade to please society. Next, I further
realized how terrible society treated people with these problems, especially back then.
Before, people were less open to this concept. This can be seen as Lili Elbe gets beaten
by two men and when she gets diagnosed as mentally ill. Finally, the film made me
realize what milestones one’s braveness can be achieved. Because of Lili Elbe’s drive
and courage to face the gender reassignment surgery whilst being told it was dangerous,
she became a transgender pioneer and a key to the success rate that we have today in this
surgery.
