           Cardinal Rules of Safety

 Updated May 2014

The following is a list of safety rules that the company has determined to be of utmost priority.   Failure to follow these
rules may create a greater risk of injury to our employees and their coworkers and/or may subject our firm to severe
penalties.  It is important for our employees to follow all required safety policies and procedures (as detailed in the JLL
Health & Safety Manual) which include these “Cardinal Rules of Safety”, for the work they perform.

Managers must demonstrate zero‐tolerance of any willful disregard of these critical rules by our employees or
subcontractors.  JLL employees who violate safety rules are subject to immediate disciplinary action including and up
to termination.  Subcontractor employees are subject to immediate removal.

JLL employees and subcontractors are required to always:
 Observe the safe work procedures of these tasks that could result in a serious accident (the “Severe Six”)
• Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
Never begin work on equipment without isolating all hazardous energy (not just electrical energy)
• Comply with all Arc Flash and other electrical safety procedures
Never work on electrical equipment without following all proper electrical safety procedure requirements
• Follow safe requirements for working at heights, including the use of ladders
Never improperly use ladders, lifts or scaffolds and never work on roofs without proper fall protection
• Comply with confined space or other work requiring a permit
Never perform these types of high‐hazard work without proper training and a permit where required (e.g.
hot work, line breaking)
• Follow all JLL safe driving requirements
Never drive while text messaging or while e‐mailing on mobile devices.  Understand and follow your
state/local regulations on use of mobile devices while driving.
• Comply with machine guarding requirements
Never remove or bypass safety guards on moving machinery.  Ensure all guards are re‐installed properly
after maintenance is complete
 Act on your duty to speak up when you see something unsafe
Never watch or participate in an unsafe act being performed.   Speak up to stop the job, or alert supervision
immediately to the unsafe condition
 Understand the hazards of each job and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) every time it is required
Never start a job without first identifying the safety hazards, and never perform work requiring PPE without
using the appropriate equipment each and every time
 Get proper approvals for safely bringing a contractor on site
Never bring a contractor on site without following proper Contractor Safety procedures
 Report all work‐related injuries immediately to your supervisor, regardless of severity
Never wait and see if a minor strain, contusion or other injury at work becomes consequential before reporting
it to your supervisor.  Many “minor” injuries lead to major injuries if not properly addressed right away
