Practice For Reading Visual Texts

This document provides a rhetorical analysis of two music videos from 2003 and 2016. Both videos address the issues of hate, fear, and division in society. The first video portrays a loveless world consumed by self and intolerance, while the second focuses on continuing conflict and inequality hurting children. Both use emotional imagery and facts to argue that societal behaviors have not significantly changed over a decade despite efforts for peace. The relationship between the videos is that they deliver similar messages about social division over time to different target audiences.

Rhetorical Analysis of a Visual Text

The story told in the 2003 video is that there is too much drama in the world and that

where there should be love there were only fear and hate. The main characters are a group of

people running around different locations questioning where love is all over their city. This story

leads me to believe that our world is in danger of becoming a loveless society, where we are

consumed by self and intolerance. They mentioned terror attacks from other countries and how

we should be worried about the threats in our own backyard as reasons for their claim. They used

anecdotes to support their claim by showing people glued to their television sets hearing the

negative messages about the state of the world. The video uses Pathos to cause an emotional

reaction in the viewer. Showing pictures of the children who were affected by the terror in the

world. The audience for this is for those who are early teens to late ‘20s that live in urban areas

and are of lower to middle economic status.

In the remix video, the story that is told is that even though we are fighting for peace with

other countries, we are still fighting with each other here at home. The main characters are the

children who are affected by the hate and inequality in our country. Well, the main claim that

made me sit and ponder is WHY? Why do we live with so much hate and anger towards those

who are different than ourselves? Why are children the ones who suffer the most from this

animosity? Just why? The reasons noted in the video were war, poverty, hate groups, and police

brutality. The evidence is the facts on hand. They showed clips from different events that have

caused division between us.

The refugee boy that drowned because his family had to sneak into our country, the race

riots with police, and the look of hate on the skinheads' face at a rally. It shows that we are not as

evolved as we think we are. The video uses all three Pathos, Ethos, and Logos to appeal to the

audience. The audience is anyone affected by these issues, so really, it’s humanity as we are all

impacted or had an opinion about the state of the world. This appeal encompasses all, not just

one demographic.

The relationship between both these videos is that although these videos were made 13

years apart, the behaviors of the people in this country have not changed. The claims are the

same as we are still hurting our children the most with this division. I think the second video gets

the message across more effectively because it is subdued and matter of fact. The first video was

more upbeat in its delivery, so I was not focused on the message and more focused on the lyrics.

Yes, the two videos appeal to different audiences, the first one is geared towards a younger

audience with its upbeat sound and visuals of the city. The second one is more towards a slightly

older crowd with less busywork in the background. The purpose is the same and that is to bring

awareness to division in humanity. I believe they made two different versions because the

audience that is targeted in the first video has gotten older, wiser, and have children of their own.

They can appreciate the message the song delivers even more.
