Guide Questions:
1. Discuss the context the speech was delivered.
The speech that Corazon Aquino in front of the United States Congress on September 18, 1986, about how
to declare the freedom of the Filipinos from the Marcos regime. And to appeal for financial assistance by
informing the Americans about the Philippines. It is also about the Filipinos spot against the dictatorial
Ferdinand Marcos. She then mentioned how powerful the people’s voices are despite the terrible. She also
emphasized how her husband Ninoy Aquino contributed to our country. For the nation, Ninoy became the
placing sacrifice that answered their prayers for freedom. Marcos detained Ninoy along with people who had
spoken up for democracy. Ninoy Aquino died Ninoy’s death served as a country resurrection in the courage
and faith that people could be free again. Cory gives thanks to the Americans for offering them a haven when
they needed it and invited them to join forces as we build a new home for democracy another haven for the
oppressed. She made the invitation also sign the two nation’s commitment which is freedom.
2. Watch the speech of Cory Aquino. Describe the scene. How was the speech? How did the audience react
to her half-hour-long address?
Corazon’s speech was delivered at the United States Congress in Washington D.c in front of a huge crowd
where has witnessed her remarkable speech. The members of congress wore yellow ties and toasted yellow
roses as they greeted her. Particularly, her speech was heartfelt and has great power. She pointed out the
abuses of Marcos with his authority or power and how much he abused it.
3. What was in her speech that convinced the House of Representatives to grant two-hundred-million-dollar
emergency aid to the Philippines? What were the issues raised or views pointed out in her address?
“We fought for honor and if only for honor, we shall pay.’’ And yet we have to wring the payments from the
sweat of our men’s faces and sink all the wealth filed up by the bondman's two hundred fifty years of
unrequited toils it is about agreeing to pay the debt that was stolen by Marcos.
4. How did the speech affect you as a viewer? In what way would it be rendered relevant to the current
conditions of our country? Cite specific lines from the speech.
As a viewer, I felt helpless knowing that I wasn’t able to do rights for my country. At the same time, I am
proud that they have the courage and fight for their rights and freedom.
5. What are the points in her speech that you agree and disagree with? Which lines hit home?
I absolutely agree to “Like Abraham Lincoln, I understand that fore may be necessary before merely.
Like Lincoln, I don’t relish it. Yet, I will do whatever it takes to defend the integrity and freedom of my
country.
In the second half of her speech where she needs to discuss about her plans for the Philippines. But She
didn’t really give a clear objective. Also, what should be her plan after the $26 billion foreign debt that’s
why I disagree on this point.
