Enhancing the Pupils' Problem Solving Skills Involving Time through Mobile Learning

Approach (mLearning)

INTRODUCTION

The enhancement of learners’ ability to solve a problem is an essential objective in

learning mathematics. The acquired learning and skills can be applied in real-life situations,
specifically in time telling. Based on the least mastered skills from the teacher, the pupils are
lacked of problem solving skills involving time due to various factors that affect their learning.
The researchers aim to identify the factors that limiting the pupils to be skilful in solving
problem involving time. As a result, the intervention of this research is the Mobile Learning
Approach that is also applicable in this time of pandemic. After reading various research studies
about this problem, the researchers have noticed that the traditional teaching method is one of the
factors that limit the learners to understand basic mathematics.
Technology is the result of combining skills, methods, and processes that result in the
productions of services and goods. This technology includes different modern gadgets such as
computers, mobile phones, tablets, and other forms of modern technology. The researchers see
these mobile devices as a way of how the students can learn effectively amid this pandemic. The
researchers have come up with combining the mobile devices and learning process to achieve the
goal of eradicating the poor problem solving skills involving time of the learners.
According to McQuiggan et al., (2015) mobile learning is instant and optionally
accessible, anywhere and anytime learning, which helps us create our knowledge, satisfy our
curiosity, collaborate with others and enrich our experiences. The researchers cannot oppose that
fact that the rapid development of technology inculcated a great impact to the people. There is a
huge negative impact to the other people but the researchers use these modern devices for the
students to learn safely, easily, and conveniently. mLearning will create a change and influence
the learners greatly to accumulate new knowledge and skills. This will motivate the learners to
study harder because this approach is designed for learning and playing. Mobile learning is a
new way to access learning contents using mobile devices. According to (Kuzu, 2014;
Middleton, 2015), mobile devices (specifically smartphones and tablet computers) aim to change
the way of learning and teaching methods innovatively. It seems a habit for every student to
consult the internet to have their basis for their daily school activities. This can be used in
different purposes like a learner who cannot allocate time going to learning centers. Mobile
learning also helps learners to become literate in using technology in a modern world. The
efficiency of mobile learning may be determined by the performance exemplified by the pupils.
On the other hand, there are some families who cannot afford to have at least one smartphone
and cellphone load to access the internet. This mLearning approach affiliates with supplementary
videos, Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) and Self-Learning Kit (SLK) to promote inclusive
education. The researchers foresee that this problem may arise given the fact that not all families
belong to a middle class. This should not be a major problem to stop the children from learning
because this modern age is innovative enough to create a modern solution.
According to Al-Khateeb (2018), the Mobile Learning has been used in teaching some
subjects and it has been proven that it is successful up to this day in improving the teaching-
learning process. The mLearning will bring more hands-on experiences that can enhance the
understanding of the pupils to a particular problem. Education today is no longer limited to the
traditional classroom lecture. As the 21st century occurred, the schools and teachers should
discover and develop new method of teaching and learning. The emerging technology has a
prominent contribution to the new normal. The learning will always be available and accessible.
This new way of learning is a good start and preparation for the future’s more advanced lifestyle.
Various problems are approaching like the COVID-19 pandemic and it seems to affect
the academic performances of the children, thus, the school should accommodate the different
learning preferences of the students. Therefore, the problem of this study is to specify the
inability of the learners to solve problems involving time which moved to utilize the mLearning
approach in teaching-learning process. In addition, the goal of this study is to determine the
effect of mLearning approach to the problem solving skills involving time of Grade 1 pupils in
Palapala Elementary School.

Methodology

This chapter present the research design, sampling procedure, data gathering technique.

Research Design

Experimental research is aimed at casting light on a problem through a process of data

collection that enables them to determine the situation more completely than was possible

without employing this method (Fox, W. & Bayat, M.S., 2007).

In its essence, experimental studies are use establishing existence of cause-and-effect

relationship between two variables. This experiment manipulates one variable while a second

variable is measured and other variables are controlled.

An important characteristic of experimental research relates to the fact that this research

design can employ two numbers of variables that can show cause-and-effect between the two

variables.

In this study, the researchers used experimental research to determine the effectiveness of

given independent and dependent variables.

Sampling Procedure

A sample is a smaller, manageable version of a larger group. A sample should represent

the whole population and not reflect bias toward a specific attribute.

A purposive sampling relies on the judgment of the researchers when choosing who to

ask to participate. Researcher’s may implicitly thus choose a representative sample to suit for the

study.

Participants of this study are the Grade 1 A.Mabini pupils and the teacher of Palapala

Elementary School in San Ildefonso Bulacan. The researchers obtained the total population of

Grade 1 A.Mabini. The population of Grade 1 A.Mabini is 36.

Data Gathering Technique

The researchers used test (post-test and pre-test) as its main tool for gathering the needed

data for the study. The test consisted time related questions that will answered by Grade 1 A.

Mabini together with an interview type test that will be answered by the teacher of by the Grade

1 A.Mabini for question “What are the factors to be considered in integrating mobile learning in

teaching Grade 1 pupils?”.
