OBJECTIVE: Finds the measure of the angles formed when parallel lines are cut by a transversal
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:
• Finding the Measure of the Angles Formed When Parallel Lines are Cut by a
Transversal
This lesson will enable you to determine the relation among the angles formed
when two lines are cut by a transversal and use this relation to find the measures of the
angles.
TRY TO DISCOVER!
When a transversal intersects a pair of lines, eight angles are formed and are named as
follows:
1. Exterior angles ∠1, ∠2, ∠7, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠8
2. Interior angles ∠3, ∠4, ∠5, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠6
3. Pairs of Alternates-Interior Angles ∠3, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠6, ∠4, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠5
4. Pairs of Alternate-Exterior Angles ∠1, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠8, ∠2, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠7
5. Pairs of Corresponding Angles ∠1, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠5, ∠2, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠6
∠7, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠3, ∠8, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠4
2. In the figure, ∠𝐴𝐶𝐷 ≅ ∠𝐶𝐷𝐸 ≅ ∠𝐷𝐹𝐺. Write down the pairs of parallel lines and the pairs
of congruent angles other than those already given.

⃡ // 𝑫𝑬
Parallel lines: 𝑨𝑩
̅̅̅̅ // 𝐹𝐺
𝐶𝐷
̅̅̅̅ and 𝐷𝐸 // 𝐵𝐶
3. In the figure, 𝐵𝐴 // 𝐶𝐷 ̅̅̅̅ . Find the
values of x and 3x.
Solution:
∠𝐶 ≅ ∠𝐶𝐷𝐸 Why?
m∠𝐶 = 180 – x Why?
m∠𝐶𝐷𝐸 = 3x
3x = 180 – x
3x + x = 180
4x = 180
180
x = 4 or 45°
3x = 135°.
PRACTICE EXERCISE 1
Using the diagram below, name the relationship between the following pairs of angles
given 𝑥 ∥ 𝑦 and 𝑝 ∥ 𝑞.
1. ∠3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠11
2. ∠6 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠10
3. ∠5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠10
4. ∠2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠3
5. ∠2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠7
6. ∠13 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠15
7. ∠4 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠12
8. ∠9 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠11
9. ∠5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠7
10. ∠1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠3
PRACTICE EXERCISE 2:
SUMMING UP
➢ A transversal is a line which intersects two or more lines at
different points.
➢ If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the
1. corresponding angles are congruent.
2. alternate interior angles are congruent.
3. alternate exterior angles are congruent.
4. interior/exterior angles on the same side of the transversal
are supplementary.

1. ∠12 _____ 6. ∠10 _____
2. ∠11 _____ 7. ∠13 _____
3. ∠14 _____ 8. ∠15 _____
4. ∠9 _____ 9. ∠16 _____
5. 𝑚∠16 − 𝑚∠11 _____ 10. 𝑚∠9 + 𝑚∠18 _____
